Residents share what life is like inside Greensboro’s pallet homes 

Life can take a turn for any of us. What a good way to help people back on their feet

I am a testament that this could happen to anyone. The last 4 years have been hell; first 2 years COVID no income; next 2 years had involved major surgery requiring 23 days in intensive care and recovery. Of course no income. But I own my home and had saved like a dog over the years and thankfully I keep the lights and fought back the wolves at my door. I am now digging out of the hole and feel blessed to still live in a beautiful home, have a car and pay my bills. I am not rich but extremely blessed and oh so happy now. But people must have compassion for our fellow human beings and their journey thru homelessness. Given the unknowns anybody could become homeless so be kind and be humble.

It happened to my dad... he worked his entire life as a laborer as well as a painter. He got injured and lost his means to work and his apartment... he slept at the LA rescue mission for almost over a year while waiting for his disability income to come thru. He said it was ROUGH.. But hes ok! Has another apartment now and still disabled but he still enjoys his life. I thank God he's ok and happy! Encouragement to anyone going thru it you WILL make it thru ❤

This is such a great alternative to shelters for the homeless!

They need to place these in every state. Such a compassionate and helpful idea. And as the gentleman stated it could be any one of us that needs help like this at any time.

It’s a blessing to have a roof over your head and those who contributed to this program will continue to be blessed. This is where the government funding should go to rather than war.

I wish I had so much money I can start everywhere that needs it. It breaks my heart that so many people are in need. Way to go Greensboro for showing the rest of the country how to help others!!

I’m 54, disabled due to multiple, and I’d love something like this. Low maintenance and very easy to clean and keep tidy. Thank God I’ve never been homeless or lived in my car but I’d greatly nvr appreciative. Thank you for helpful these deserving ppl.

This is such a blessing! In Life..we NEVER know what can or will happen. No one is exempt from loss, sickness. But Thank God for these doors that are helping ppl who have fallen on hard times. Just to have a warm bed & a roof over their heads it's sooooo wonderful! Knowing they are safe and to be cared about! What a burden that has been lifted off their shoulders! Every person should have a warm or cool place to sleep and a comfortable bed. These pallet homes should be made available to so many people. And they should be made to keep them clean.

I own my own home due to being fortunate that I received a small inheritance from my parents when they died. I never thought id have a home due to having an ABI . Each night i recite this Thankyou mum and dad for the roof above me that keeps me dry, the walls that surround me that keep me warm, the floor below me that keeps me clean, and the peace of mind and security it gives me. Its only a small cottage that is some what run down being 120 years old,but i am so thankful for it,and the parents i had.

This administration is putting many families in difficult situations. A lot of people are financially struggling to live, put a roof over their head and put food on the table. Things are getting worse these days, if you don't find means of multiplying your money you might wake up a day to realise you didn't plan well for yourself and family…

I stay in one of these currently in Cali and it definitely gives you privacy unlike the usual shelter. I also stay at a low barrier shelter and so I don't have curfews and no phone rules either. The downside is pallets have no plugs/outlets, bathroom, ventilation(so the walls get wet and your blakets and stuff will grow toxic black mold), heat or air. It's basically like being in a tent made of metal. Some ppl here still get their pallets robbed. I would say a pallet is good if you don't currently have a tent or for when your tent floods or you can't find a good spot. It does protect you from rain but there are many openings in the walls due to how They're made, so some ppl's pallets leak and bugs can get in.

This is so good, we need this in California. My sister is somewhere on these streets in California but I can’t find her, I know she’s still alive because it shows that she’s receiving money from being disabled. She doesn’t even know our Mom passed away.

When I go to other states and see the roads littered with encampments , this is a doable solution. More states should provide land to groups that are trying to home people. Wake up folks

I love these little pods, but they would be perfect if they could be slightly bigger, to incorporate a lavatory, basin and shower. Nevertheless, they are soooo much better than being on the street or sleeping in a car. Thank you for giving these people a warm bed.

66 lived in shared housing for 15 and put myself on multiple waiting lists for senior housing ❤ i have a full one bedroom with an unobstructed view of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor ❤ blessed

Awh that's a great idea, those wee pallet homes, a bed, warm dry safe, light. Good to know these folks are off the streets, more towns need this.

To each his own. I lived in a 30 feet RV as a teen and believe me it was not easy! Esp with 3-4 other people. But I suppose the feeling/experience is different as you age and you're more settled, matured and all so sleeping in any place that's not in the rain/heat/cold is better than on the street. So I think this is really nice. I'm glad for these small home type communities. I think they're a pretty clever idea. I just hope they have good security for the tenants.

This is great for people. No human should be without a home.

We have one of these villages near my apartment. It's been fine, no issues. They pick people who don't cause problems, and I think they should build more communities like this. Which would you rather have next door to your house? A ramshackle homeless encampment covered in trash or a tiny house village?

No one in this country should be homeless or hungry or without medical care. The government needs to start building safe, high-rise housing with security, safe housing, and I believe every neighborhood and every community should have some sort of government operated kitchens where people can go for at least two meals a day.

This is beautiful. I was homeless ib Philadelphia with my lady for nearly two years. Having warm place to sleep at night with privacy is something every American should have. It will reduce crime and the streets would be much cleaner. Just a few acres of land in each city could solve the homeless crisis. Once housed counselor can help them get treatment, employment or Soc Sec benefits it they qualify. God bless all the homeless people.

Let's go a step further. An organization buys land, divides it into small parcels. On each parcel a small, modest house is built. Prospective tenants help build the house (sweat equity- invested). After living in the house and paying all utilities without fail for 7 years, they own it. In the center of each small home community, a garden for growing food, a covered pavilion for community activities like bbq. Help them achieve the American dream- home ownership, a place of their own. A hand UP. Not a hand out.

The only thing I see that could be a problem with this little shed overtime if that ceiling is not sprayed with insulation. By not having a barrier like a house and having the attic vented out you can cause mold. I left an apartment that had a serious case of mold from being so wet. I'm pretty sure if you sprayed it with spraying insulation on the ceiling I don't think you would get that mold but I know if you build it like a home in lower your ceiling. And make an addict and insulate your ceiling and then the attic outside you will not get mold it'll be just like a little house. Because if the temperature on the outside of the roof is really cold or has snow and ice on the top you're going to get water on the inside which water causes dampness and mold eventually. I have a backup tiny home now and I've got to seal the ceiling in it or do something like an attic. I'm sure these guys like this fellow is playing money a month or by the week. In California a few years ago those sheds were costing those guys almost as much as my three bedroom two car garage was. And shelter with sheds on the lot in Southern California it was something like 25 to 50 million for everything. I don't remember the exact figure but it was high dollar. You can see why this won't go far at all when you get go vern ment involved of overspending of anything. Look for Universal basic income soon when more people get pushed out of housing.

my wish is that these would be in every town because all people should be able to have a basic shelter, safe place to exist.

This should be available everywhere for all homeless individuals.

Having a safe, warm place to sleep is so fundamental to getting anything else done in your life. I struggle at work if my neighbors kept me up the night before- imagine trying to get back on your feet when you've spent your nights cold and worried about being confronted by other homeless people or by police.

These places a great, but adding a bathroom to each one makes them even better, because then the people would not have to go to a community bathroom during the middle of the night.

What is it like in that metal box in the summertime with no AC?

When you consider just how much wealth exists in the world by just a handful of individuals, sticking people in little boxes seems messed up. These poor people have had it so damn hard though that they’re grateful for the box. Sad this is the world we live in that this is the best we can do!

The housing program for homeless people to go into the pallet homes, is a great initiative to get people off the streets. Many illness can accumulate when people are living on the streets due to lack of nutrients and other reasons.
