Just a quick introduction video about my custom made, resin bonded CBN wheel for my Tormek T8.
I use it for both apexing my knives as well as fixing/regrinding damaged tools people drop off for sharpening.
You can buy it from Haefeli Switzerland - email them for a quote here:

Had to reupload because RU-vid refused to make the video available in HD. Now it is.

Great Post ! Completely agree. Resin Bonds up to 2000 grit have been standard equipment on Tool and Cutter grinders where finish and wear is important since the late 70's. Plated bond wheels are only used in very hard materials like carbide where wheel shape retention is critical and finish is not that important (tool ends)

Plated is also very handy for soft yet hard to machine super alloys. I know that EP CBN and diamond wheels are used with great success in grinding nickel base alloys.

I think it will last well over 10 years, since the high speed wheels for woodworkers are known to last almost 5 years

It should indeed. I honestly expect a lifetime by now.

Swiss made is often better. Bosch reciprocating saw blades (for instance) drastically outperform everything else I've tried including Diablo.

hey man, you promised about a year ago you'd make a tutorial about how to sharpen your special ceramic knives, do you have the time for that at the moment?

@kknives_switzerland
@kknives_switzerland Год назад

Hello from Australia. What coolant that is non toxic would you recommend?
@kknives_switzerland
@kknives_switzerland 10 месяцев назад
Biowas works well, but because of its non toxic nature you will have to replace it more often to avoid bacteria/fungi spreding in the water. 2% may be enough to keep corrosion away.

This looks really nice, I have been hesitant ordering cbn wheels when I saw australian knife shaper vadim show how others had the sheet delaminate. Did you go for one allround stone for this say 400 grit?
@kknives_switzerland
@kknives_switzerland 2 года назад
This one is more of a roughing stone; I'd say it's 250 grit. Depends also on how deep you dress it of course; but it's defintely on the rough side. I hope to be able to afford a 30 and 15 micron one as well in the forseeable future.

Aluminum Oxide so called "white stick" guided by hand will do. Works even for some surface grinding applications in a pinch. But definitely more than precise enough for this application. Works great for me.

No unfortunately. They will glaze. Especially with the crazy high hardness steels I use.

That's the process they use to make them, but the term can also refer to ceramic bonded ones. This particular one is resin bonded.

@@kknives_switzerland ---- One of the things not mentioned much is the material abrasives are set or bonded in. And people comparing whetstones rarely mention the type of abrasive. Do you know enough to give an overview? Specifically, I'd like to know if soaking stones use a different binder, or different process, as contrasted to splash & go. People cover all kinds of steels used for knives, but not a much on the composition of stones, synthetic or natural.

@@kknives_switzerland ---- Interesting to learn that Belgian coticule stones are garnet. I would be very interested in watching a YT video you might make using your metallurgical microscope to show stages of sharpening! I looked for the video you posted to Instagram, but did not find it. In sharpening knives for friends, all of them so far have had at least minor chips, so I go from sander, to coarse stone, to fine. My USB microscope at 200X will show scratch marks, but I still have not been able to determine exactly what happens with the edge on a high grit stone such as a 10K, and stropping. And lighting is a part of the science of microscopy [that I do not know].

@kknives_switzerland
@kknives_switzerland 2 года назад
