I've revamped my resin casting tutorial adding in all the stuff I've learned in the past few years. (And you get to hear my voice now! Such as it is.) Sorry for the crappy audio quality. (And for sounding like a sloppy-drunk robot reading from a cue-card.)
You can find my prop and armormaking blog here:

And my online armormaking tutorial here;

What a coincidence, you made a Steven Universe gem tutorial without having known it yet. x3

Oh wow, this video is a nostalgia bomb for real--and I think I actually see the actual items that I commissioned from this particular person a few hundred years ago (the three blue diamond-cut gems and the dome)! Cosplay history for sure.

This is so helpful and you're really easy to understand in your narration. Thanks for putting this up! :)

Oh, and for the Fai staff I made, I just used glass stones that I had bought at the local craft store. (The ones used for putting into crystal vases and such.) The iridescent ones worked very well for the small gems on Fai's staff.

How far resin casting has come, I was surprised to hear her say not to use silicone for mold making as nowadays, most resin charm and dice makers almost exclusively use silicone molds.

Thank you for this! I have to make a double sided faceted gem for the wand/sceptor that goes with my Judal cosplay. I have looked everyone for a method to make one. I look forward to making it and using this tutorial. Great video!!

Would it be possible to do the same with the mold but also put part of the mold on top to create an indentation? Like for a Jasper cosplay it has to fit over the nose but if one side is flat that won't fit over the nose.

It would be tough if you wanted to make a gem that you could see all the way through since you'd have to build a mold that would divide into two parts. (Your better option might be to make two molds that fit together back to back and attach shiny mirror backings to both gems in the middle. )

What was the material you used to make the faceted gem mold? Tape board? (Do you think I would be able to find it at Michael's?)

@theproplady can you tell me if i can just use duct tape for both the outside and inside or does it have to be a specific kind?
@MintIceOcean
@MintIceOcean 9 лет назад
Is the the tape the shiny invisible kind or the paper milky kind? (I realise it's printed but I can't tell from the video the shine or matte of it. Upon looking up cellophane tape it gave me both options?) P.S. Thank you for such a great tutorial.

I'm going to try to use this tutorial to make Princess Garnet's (FF9) necklace. Hopefully it works out.

this is extremely helpful. i'm making a costume for fai d fluorite from tsubasa, and i couldn't figure out how in the hell to make the gems on the staff, but this will probably work. one question, however. do you think that i could somehow manage to cast that giant crystal in the middle of his staff from resin, or should i find some other way of doing it?
@theproplady
@theproplady 14 лет назад
I thought I explained that. (The tape will wrinkle if you apply it to something and then bend it. That's why you can only apply the tape to a surface after it's been bent. ) I may have to revise the narration of this video to make some things clearer...

I was wondering if it would be possible to make a gem with a premade gem already placed in the mold...if that makes sense. So if I were to use resin to make the eyes (for Fran from Reborn!'s frog hat) I'd do something like make the blue (iris) gem, then put it into a mold & pour the clear solution, or would the blue end up melting and/or causing troubles?

Proplady thank you so much for this video, I'm going as Mistress Fi the sword spirit on Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword and I had a hell of a time figuring out how to make the diamond shape gem in the middle of her chest, she has a gold setting around it though, what would you do about that? I have a few idea's myself

I'm probably going to be using this for a Flame Princess cosplay. Have you ever attached one of these resin gems to skin or would you know of a safe way to do that? She has that one gem on her dress but she also has a large gem on her forehead, and I'd like to do a good cosplay without ruining my skin or hurting myself in some way.

I am making a drill pendent for a gurren lagann cosplay and I was wondering how I would go about making the mold. The drill is cone shaped and has a inner line that makes a spiral. If you can help me I will appreciate it.
