Resin Reviews with pros and cons- Dice making without a pressure pot #2

When I started making dice, I had trouble finding reviews of resin specifically as regards dice making, and the few that there were all were pressure-pot users. After the huge response to my first video, the top two most requested for next topics were how I make molds and what my thoughts were on resins. The molds video will take a little time, so in the meantime, here is a review of the 5 resins I have used so far. Please note that the views expressed in this video are solely my own and based solely on my own experiences and techniques. I present both the pros and cons for each resin as fairly as I am able. I also wish to disclose for purposes of absolute clarity that after using their products for some time, I became an affiliate for Rockstar Resins, so I do get a small commission from them when someone uses my discount link.
Here is a link to a summary spreadsheet of the resin review topics I discuss, side by side: docs.google.co...
Here is my Rockstar Resins affiliate link if you want to try their products with a small discount: rockstarresins...

Lol, I’ve been looking at rockstar specifically because of your first video... and I was wondering about the difference as far as the four and five star- scratch, heat, and uv resistance; as well as flexibility after curing (in the case of flat projects that would need rigidity). Thank you so much for your reviews!!

I just responded about my observations on initial use of 5-star, but you as some very good questions. Maybe I can shoot a quick video comparing the two on those criteria as well to help people make decisions.

@@KaitlinPierce Did you ever do this? Are you planning on doing it still? I'm curious to hear your thought on these points as well as on the 4-star 3:1 vs the 4-star 1:1 resins.

Absolutely loved your reviews! By any chance have you tried Counter Culture DIY resins? If not I would love for you to do a review on it to compare to the Rockstar resins. If you are not familiar with their products, they have two lines of resin. One is their Artist resin which comes in 3 different viscosity levels (original Artist resin, Medium Viscosity, and Thin Viscosity). They also have 2 casting resins (of which I have not tried for dominoes because of the extended cure time, but may try for preserved floral projects in a deeper mold). The tumbler makers love the original Artist resin because it gives a phenomenal top coat and works really well with a torch for removing bubbles. I make dominoes and keychains and feel this is too thick so I am currently using the thin viscosity. I have the medium viscosity and will try that as soon as the weather warms to more consistent 70-80°, probably in April or May (Texas weather really just does whatever it wants to do 😉)

I have not tried them, but I watch a lot of Artsy Mad Woman to relax here on RU-vid and she swears by them. I’m going to keep a running list to try for another video down the line. Thank you for the suggestion!

Hey! So I've make a bunch of sets now with your videos. Been super awesome. Been using Amazing Clear resin just for testing till I get more confident in my process. Definitely going to be buying Rockstar Resins with your link because I finally feel confident enough to try different resins. Biggest complaint I get though is the dice come out really light. Is that just the weight of resin, or would Rockstar add weight once cured? Thank you by the way!
@KaitlinPierce
@KaitlinPierce 3 года назад
I’ve never used amazing clear cast, but when experimenting, I felt there were varying finish qualities with resins. Some polish better than others for example. I’ve never weighed them specifically 🤔.

Do you think alcohol ink would work in the resins where mica powders don't? Also, your channel is awesome! I'm excited to see what you make next!
@KaitlinPierce
@KaitlinPierce 3 года назад
First off thank you! and yes, alcohol inks work fine in the casting resins. Just know that it petri is what you want to do, it sinks super fast. I usually pour it about 2 hours in advance if I want to do petri in a 3:1 resin

Hi Kaitlin! I love your videos so much and as many have said, you have helped me feel confident in making dice without a pressure pot
@KaitlinPierce
@KaitlinPierce 3 года назад
I do! My super technical system is large plastic cup labeled for each day of the week. I put the dice into the cup that is 2-3 days from the date I poured (the date they should be fully cured). That way I know when they are done.
@Hinagiku2
@Hinagiku2 3 года назад
@@KaitlinPierce oh that's super smart! I will use that technique to help me remember when my dice is fully cured as well :) I was also curious regarding the dice that are cured to the touch, does that mean that you can still take your nail to an edge and "dent" it (then after a few seconds the dent goes away) or does that mean I didn't mix my resin well enough?
@KaitlinPierce
@KaitlinPierce 3 года назад
So resin is plastic and all plastic can be dented with a nail if you try hard enough a d if it’s warm enough. I won’t call something a soft cure unless gentle pressure from my nail marks it. If I have to really push then I personally am fine with the cure. Some makers will disagree, but I haven’t met a resin or plastic yet that I can’t deny with a fingernail if I really try. I think a better judgement may be if the corners are still able to be pushed flat. That, to me, is a problem. Soft cures can happen for many reasons, including temperature, humidity, or even just a poor batch from the manufacturer. Most manufacturers will give you a refund or replacement if you report soft curing and it turns out to be a bad batch.

I have a question. In the video and comments you recommend the Rockstar 4 Star 1:1. I went to the site and the 1:1 is listed as a thin coat. Is this the same resin or am I missing something on the site?
@KaitlinPierce
@KaitlinPierce 3 года назад
It is the same. I’ve tried the 4-star 1:1 and 3:1 and the 5-star 1:1. They all work well for dice but the 3:1 is so thin that even mica powder sinks and it takes longer to cure than I’m personally willing to wait. Both 1:1 formulas work great but the 5-star is thicker and cures much faster.

@@KaitlinPierce Awesome! Thanks so much for the great video and for the quick response. I am currently putting together a shopping list so I can get started making dice and this was the exact kind of advice I was looking for.

So for someone who's just starting with dice and doesnt have a pressure pot do you think the 4 star 1 to 1 rockstar resin would be the best to start with?
@KaitlinPierce
@KaitlinPierce 3 года назад
I think it’s the most forgiving. It releases bubbles well if you let it sit a minute while you prep your molds and it finished super clear. I have had the best luck without a pressure pot with the 4:1

Are u using a uv light on the puduo
@KaitlinPierce
@KaitlinPierce 3 года назад
No. It is a two part epoxy like the others. Most epoxies have UV stabilizers in them to prevent yellowing when they are exposed to UV light (ie being in the sun). I have heard another reviewer say that Puduo yellows badly when exposed to the sun.

I’m learning many resin companies don’t ship outside of the country in which they are produced... there is a Facebook group called the Great Library of Dice Making where there are makers from all over the world who often share resins available in different countries!

Do you know what the difference between 4 star and 5 star 1:1 is?
@KaitlinPierce
@KaitlinPierce 3 года назад
I know I answered this already in another forum, but I’ll answer here as well. I don’t feel the rockstar site appropriately describes the differences between 4-star and 5-star. I have recently experimented with 5-star. I may do a short video on it as an addendum to this one, but to summarize: 5-star is thicker, better surfacing, and holds glitter very very well. It set for me in just 5-hours as well. However, because it’s so thick and fast setting, it is challenging without a pressure pot. I think it is definitely a quality product but I’m not sure I will switch to it with my current setup.
