A master of pocket and musicality

Beautiful! For some reason I kept getting notifications for the new video when I was stuck with just my phone and the crappy sound of phone speakers... Tonight I was tinkering in the shed and I actually have a decent stereo going on here and it sounded fantastic!! That outdoor live set at the brewery also got quite a few plays this summer!! Perfect music for fixing bikes, woodworking and such!!

I’m a very new drummer that has pieced together a very minimal kit (kick, hi-hats, snare). These videos of yours always come at the perfect time to break me out of a rut creatively.

I am trying to keep reminding myself what you said to me on our last lesson when I was complaining about how loud my big Ludwig classic maple's were..."big drums are not loud, it's the way you play them". I am really enjoying working on my touch and feel.

Really nice, mate. 👍 However (and this is just my opinion and preference), I feel that a simple/boring quarter note cross-stick/sidestick on the 2 & 4 on the snare would have fit better. Yes, the double eighths on the open snare change the tune and give it a unique and completely different feel, but (for me) were too much/too distracting/too dominating. Not that it would be any better or any more valid, but here's what I might do... While not as easily accomplished when playing live, for the final recorded track I would insert the "2 & 4" snare and cross-stick hits played backwards/reversed so the decay of each hit "ramps up" to the actual 2 & 4, and the sharp "attack" of the initial strikes follow and land on the actual/precise 2 & 4...like playing a vinyl LP record backwards, but only the snare hits and snare cross-stick. I think that would give it a kind of slow "wind-up & release" rolling motion and feel. Everyone interprets things differently, and that's cool. 😉
