Is there a way you can upload some Red Komodo footage so I can practice with it and also help me decide of I want to possibly buy it?
@EdProsser
@EdProsser Год назад
There is some Komodo sample footage on the RED website which is what I played around with before I got the camera, I can try upload some but might take me a while to get to as I'm stacked with work ATM!

Why was the noise reduction node turned off? Do you find yourself needing noise reduction to all Komodo footage at full res prem? How do you deal with noise? Cheers
@EdProsser
@EdProsser 2 года назад
Yes sorry, I actually cut this from the video as wanted to keep length down, and didn't apply noise reduction in this example, but always keep a node for it. I would usually expect to work with noise reduction on Komodo footage but not every shot! I'd place the noise reduction node first but keep it disabled until the end / exporting as it's very processor intensive.

my friend. can you help me to understand why the output tone map and highlight roll off options are greyed out @3:31 ? i'm not understanding how the project color space and gamma are set up
@EdProsser
@EdProsser Год назад
we are working in Log3G10 - so in a flat log profile - as we want to work in this colour space first to grade, before we convert to a REC.709 colour space - so we do the conversion to REC.709 later on in the node structure with the LUT - this is how you choose the tone mapping contrast and highlight roll off. The timeline / project colour space is REC.709. If you want to choose it up front, change your gamma from LOG3G10 to something like BT.1886 OR you can setup your project management to DaVinci colour managed and go that way.
@scooteractual
@scooteractual Год назад
Any reason why you dont use the Rec709 conversaion as your very last LUT as Red recommends?
@EdProsser
@EdProsser Год назад
If you want to push and pull the corrected / graded 709 image as a whole and overlay effects on it, it can be useful. Sometimes I add the effects in as earlier nodes before the red 709 conversation, depends on what I'm doing!

Hi Ed, new to the channel. Quick questin: Is this some sort of official workflow you learned somewhere or just your own one?
@EdProsser
@EdProsser 2 года назад
How do you mean by official? I guess it's a mix of things I've seen and built on and also experimenting to get certain results by controlling things in a certain way. It's not a technique I use on all my work, I don't have any one single technique I use every time and I don't think it'd be a good idea to rely on any single technique anyway. I need to put a few more colour grading vids out because this isn't the best!

@@EdProsser I go in a similar way. Exposure, white balance, look, etc. and enjoyed your video. What would make it even better would be a more clear first couple minutes with a clear agenda. Keep em coming and I keep watching. Who is your best “Red” footage grade channel?
@EdProsser
@EdProsser 2 года назад
Thanks so much for the useful feedback, realise this one is a bit unfocused. In terms of grading channels I don't have anything Komodo specific but am a big fan of Waqas Qazi for learning diff processes and learning resolve - only started using it at the beginning of year. Lewis Potts is also great for cinematography break downs and he sometimes grades, he shoots a lot on Komodo. Have you got a decent recommendations for RED grading channels?

Hi Ed, do you know why when I import the R3D file to Davinci it automatically converts it to a rec 709 image rather than being a low contrast RAW file like the one you start with in this video?
@EdProsser
@EdProsser Год назад
Your file will still be RAW it's probably just applying a REC.709 look as that was maybe what was setup and applied in camera - it's saved as meta data so it's easy to turn off and go back to the original log image. You can easily disable it if you go to the raw settings tab and then pull it down to clip - you can alter the settings there. Or you can alter it at the project level and specify the gamma and log setting.
@cruisechill1813
@cruisechill1813 Год назад
@@EdProsser Thanks. I cant seem to change that way but I don't think it really matters because I still get all the flexibility of the RAW file anyway and its dont the conversion for me
@EdProsser
@EdProsser Год назад
@@cruisechill1813 If it's applied a REC.709 look you'll be grading on top of that and therefore working within a much smaller colour space - so if you're planning to make big changes / colour corrections and a heavy grade - might be best to revert back to the log image
@cruisechill1813
@cruisechill1813 Год назад
@@EdProsser ah ok not ideal then, I am not sure how to stop Davinci from converting it. Even when selecting clip it doesnt change

@@EdProsser Hey, please can you let me know what "Output colour space" you are setting in camera in the image/ LUT page? Does it have an impact or is it just monitoring? Also which ISO do you use when filming in daylight? I am getting a lot of noise in the shadows at ISO 800. Thanks!

Very nice tutorial. Just your skin tone qualifier is a bit lacklustre. The trick is to use the manual settings after the selection tools. You could have done a way better selection with getting rid of the red dress by pulling down the saturation slider and remove the hair be upping the minimal luminance (always with a soft fade to the values). Just my 2 cents.
@EdProsser
@EdProsser 2 года назад
Good advice, thanks! Lots to improve on, only been using Resolve since the start of year - totally agree manual qualification gives much more control! Plan to do a more focused and shorter tutorial soon, one that's not 400 hours long!
@mpeg2000
@mpeg2000 2 года назад
Haha... it wasn't THAT bad! One can feel that you're not working in resolve for years but you for sure have the eye to get to a nice result. And that's more important since it seems some people can't get to this point no matter how much they know about the app (also matter of taste i guess). We switched from the bmpcc4k to the komodo and will have our first real gig next week. While the komodo is an ergonomical nightmare, the image quality is certainly the upgrade that i was hoping for (Alexa mini LF would have been my 1st choice, but since we need 2 cams and are a 2 man business it was out of reach unfortunately).
@EdProsser
@EdProsser 2 года назад
@@mpeg2000 thanks, appreciate it! I enjoy shooting with the Komodo and have had chance to take it on a few professional shoots now. Generally love the size and form factor, mainly just the lack of NDs that gets me in more time pressured / hand held work. Having Pro Res is also a great option too. The LF is obvs fantastic, but Komodo image is a great compromise on cost and size.

I love your videos! I hate to say this, but your Lumix S5 videos have much better colors and skin tones. The Red Komodo has a muted/sad/brownish tone to everything, it's not pleasing to my eye. I think in a few months you will realize that you made a mistake and bought into the RED hype and will sell the Komodo, as I did. I owned it for 8 months and hated the Komodo. At first I thought the image was nice, but after some time, I realized I preferred the look out of my Sony FX3 and Blackmagic 6K. Also the Komodo is a such a clunky camera to work with, and one big thing is that clients will either ask for Alexa Mini or don't care what camera you use. Nobody ever asks for a RED anymore, it was a big deal and had a brand name that everyone wanted 7 years ago, but not anymore.
@EdProsser
@EdProsser 2 года назад
We shall see! Although I love the form factor of the Komodo, no complaints there. Much prefer it to a DSLR or something bulky like the pocket 6K. It has a better balance than my EVA1 as well. I'm obviously pushing a grungier look in this example and it's not perfect but I do really like the images I'm getting out of the Komodo so far, they seem more natural and organic to me. I've been working with V-log for about 8 years so I'm more experienced working with that than RED so I expect I still have a lot to learn. With the LUMIX stuff I've posted I've also been able to use that in more interesting locations and used a much different grading process, based on the Film Vision Powergrade which I expect to start testing out with the RED stuff soon! But I really value your feedback, it's interesting that you prefer the LUMIX stuff and that's a testament to the mighty S5. I'm planning on doing a comparison video at some point so we shall see how that goes! Either way I think the S5 and Komodo will go well together.

I appreciate the effort but this was really difficult to follow; you bounced around so quickly and mumbled so much to yourself - making quick adjustments without saying clearly what you’re doing, it’s like this wasn’t intended for people to follow along.
@EdProsser
@EdProsser Год назад
Noted! This was my first attempt at a grading tutorial put out a while back, but it’s more about the workflow and node structure - than all the exact changes dialled in along the way. I’ve put out a few more tutorials grading v-log which have hopefully improved on this (!) but intend to return to Komodo footage with another tutorial soon with a bit more experience.

@@EdProsser Sorry, maybe I sound too negative. I really like the result and I’m glad you made this. Trading out my FX6 for a Komodo as well as switching from FCPX to Resolve at the same time. Finding all of the downloadable Komodo footage I can to start figuring out a color grading workflow

It's cool, I'm aware - this channel is a work in progress and I learn as I do + I'm not a professional colourist so unpicking my workflow is tricky, but helps me improve my own process too. How come you're swapping the FX6 for Komodo?
@kazlepek6552
@kazlepek6552 Год назад
@@EdProsser I actually kept the FX6, so I have both. I just really like the RED, I think it’s fun to shoot with and I like the image - if I just did video as a hobby, not a career, I would keep only the RED - it makes me excited to go shoot stuff
