1-bit sound could be the equivalent to a PC-speaker buzzer that can only output 1 tone at the time, which if done right can sound pretty musical too. I have some softwares that can output voice through an internal PC-speaker other than just beeps. All these conceptions about bit's that everything sounds like cr💩p before 64bit, is just because they think what's the best you can output of such systems if you were to produce games, because they were meant to be as primitive and cheap as possible for the majority to achieve back in the day, therefore sound and appers as they do. It's not the same thing as that was the best technology back then like we couldn't do better with it. When used for graphics, 1-bit is equal to monochrome, 2-bit like CGA 4 colours, 4-bit 16 colours, 8-bit like VGA 256 colours, 16-bit 65k colours that was achievable already in Windows 3.0 in 1990. For sound, 16-bit is already enough to make realistic instrument and voice sounds as that is the common bit rate for CD's. Your "smart"phone and computer are already operating in 32 and 64 bits.

Just to get ahead of some misunderstandings, 16bit is plenty for representing a completely realistic sound. CDs use 16bit audio, basically all audio you hear will be 16bit. The next usual step up is 24bit, which is mostly used in music production so that when mastering audio (down to 16bit) they have a bit more wiggle room for editing. 64bit is not a thing, maybe for science stuff but not for music. It's just wasted data resolution that humans can't hear.

i wonder what the psychology behind favoring the different versions is. 16 bit just does it for me, but im noticing that's not a popular opinion.
