Thank you :) www.patreon.com/cmrr // en.tipeee.com/cmrr The suites of Ancient Dances and Airs for Lute are based on Italian and French music for the lute, which was used to accompany both dances and singers and as a solo instrument in the Seventeenth and early Eighteenth centuries. Most of the tunes used by Respighi were taken from the collection of old lute music transcribed and published by the Italian musicologist Oscar Chilesotti (1848-1916). The Suite No. 1 was composed in 1917, the Suite No. 2 in 1924, and the Suite No. 3 in 1932. *Gli Uccelli ("The Birds"), an orchestral suite using lute and harpsichord music written by French, Italian, and English composers, was written in 1927, largely as a result of the immediate popularity of the Suite No. 2. All three suites were made into a ballet in 1937 by Respighi's wife, Elsa, a composer and singer who had been his pupil. SUITE NO. 2, FOR ORCHESTRA 1. Fabrizio Caroso (1531- ? ): Laura soave: balletto con gagliarda, saltarello e canario (scored for flute, two oboes, two clarinets, bassoon, two horns, harp, harpsichord, and strings). The ballet Laura soave was written in honor of Christena Lorena di Medici, Grand Duchess of Tuscany. A saltarello implies a dance faster than the one preceding it and based on the same tune. The canario was a sprightly dance supposedly originating in the Canary Islands. Caroso was the author of a famous treatise on the dance, published in Venice. 2. Jean-Baptiste Besard (1567-1625): Danza Rustica (scored for piccolo, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, harpsichord, and strings). Respighi asks that the trumpets be muted, "in imitation of old cornets." This country dance was known in France as a Branle de village and in England as a Brawl! Besard was a French lawyer, doctor, writer, and devoted amateur lutenist and composer. 3. (a) Anonymous: Campanae parisienses; (b) Marin Mersenne (1588-1648): Aria (scored for two flutes, two oboes, English horn, two bassoons, two horns, trumpet, three trombones, celesta, harp, and strings). The anonymous piece is based on the song Les Cloches de Paris ("The Bells of Paris"). It surrounds, so to speak, an aria attributed to Mersenne, a Franciscan monk and theorist who was associated with Descartes. 4. Bernardo Gianoncelli (flourished c. 1600): Bergamasca (scored for piccolo, two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, three horns, two trumpets, three trombones, harp, timpani, harpsichord [four hands], and strings). This is a "clumsy" rustic dance, based on tunes from the district of Bergamo in Northern Italy. The Bergamesca from this recording was the theme music for a longtime Canadian Broadcasting Corporation radio programme and it is an all-time favourite. Astonishingly beautiful music superbly performed - this CD is one of my desert-island discs!

More specifically, Respighi's Concerto Gregoriano (violin) , Concerto in Modo Misolidio, Métamorphosen, as well as ballet suite to Belkis our wonderful Works worthy of our attention. Finally his glorious Opera and a short one Maria Egiziaca, as David Johnson once write, " should be a staple of the concert hall !"

Here we have music of a giant. And in my view the most underrated composer of the 20th century Ottorino Respighi. Pretentious critics and close-minded listeners who only know the Roman trilogy should give a listen to these extraordinary really beautiful ancient airs and dances

You are absolutly right! Belongs to the most beautiful pieces in music ever written. From Reference Recordings I also have the Respighi - Church Windows on 45rpm-vinyl. It's even less known then the "ancient dances" and also fantastic!

One of my alltime favs, no matter what style. Dynamics and...swing (Bergamasca)! Good idea for a Reference Recording, however the original Mercury-Version is exceptional too! Just made a post on my channel about it (among others). Thank you.
