So we all know that breathing is pretty important, right? Today we're going to talk about how it works, starting with the nameless evolutionary ancestor that we inherited this from, continuing to the mechanics of both simple diffusion and bulk flow, as well as the physiology of breathing, and finishing with the anatomy of both the conducting zone and the respiratory zone of your respiratory system.

6:24 I'm pretty sure that sharing the throat for breathing and swallowing IS IDEAL, as anyone with a bad cold can tell you. It's really, really good that we aren't restricted to ONLY breathing with our nose and swallowing with our mouth. Like really good. We'd all be dead.

Thank you so much Hank Green and the whole Crash Course, you are my favorite teacher of RU-vid. Here's my general process of working with your (mainly chemistry, biology, and anatomy) courses: watch each video several times, read on the same subject in one of my science books, lather, rinse, repeat. I'm 20 years out of school but have never had the total understanding then as a student of these subjects then as I do now. Learning for the love of it is so much more effective than rushing to take it all in for the next assignment, quiz, or exam, and that it what your courses help me do.

The second he showed the diaphragm I started to voluntarily breathe.
@sion8
@sion8 9 лет назад
Me too! I have always wondered why do we have control of our breathing while also being involuntary, yet not of our heart beats? Both are needed to life but we can stop breathing voluntarily meaning not that much O2 while that happens.
@RockSprites
@RockSprites 9 лет назад
Uzumaki Naruto Just goes to show how susceptible our minds and bodies are to suggestion.
@Timka09
@Timka09 9 лет назад
sion8 I think it's because we need to be able to temporarily stop breathing when we're submersed in water or surrounded by smoke. You don't have complete control of your breathing though, you can't hold your breath for too long for example. There isn't any reason for us to have such control of our heart rate, none that would have made it more likely for our ancestors to reproduce anyway.
@RockSprites
@RockSprites 9 лет назад
Well, when considering heart rate -- it can be regulated by will and thought. It is advantageous in certain situations to control heart rate. Fear and anxiety help us in survival situations, but too much fear/stress can be harmful and prevent us from solving problems. So, regulating breathing and heart rate are useful in other ways, right?
@Timka09
@Timka09 9 лет назад
RockSprites Our nervous system control the heart rate involuntarily much better than we would do voluntarily. Or it would if our lifestyles didn't change so rapidly in the past few thousand years (or maybe tens of thousands). The human population didn't have enough time or selective pressure to adapt to these changes. Besides, when it comes to stress and anxiety it's better to control the hormones in your blood rather than directly controlling your heart rate.

@Rationalthinke4r
@Rationalthinke4r 7 лет назад
you know.... All this complex, integrated, and functional development that happened to occur randomly. But If I claim that a factory exploded in the middle of no where, and please don't ask me where this factory comes from, and after millions of years I told you that in the rubble I found a perfectly functional rolex (against the second law of thermodynamic) would you not look at me like I'm crazy. Do you know much more complex one simple cell is in comparison to the finest rolex. But they'll teach this foolishness as fact and call you a religious nut or fool if don't believe it. In some countries you can't even receive a high school diploma if don't believe in this forced foolishness.
@mrconch7238
@mrconch7238 7 лет назад
not an appropriate comparison at all. Biological/evolutionary processes have the ability (so to speak) to 'throw out' forms and functions which do not work. More importantly, forms and functions which do work are kept. Also, its billions of years - a number large enough you (and I) cannot really comprehend.
@TimberWulfIsHere
@TimberWulfIsHere 7 лет назад
Matt Contreras it's not comprehendable because it's not true, there is overwhelming evidence against the belief of millions of years. Millions of years also do not bring new functions or traits in all species, natural selection and mutation can only use information that is there or remove information.
@mrconch7238
@mrconch7238 7 лет назад
I wasnt talking to you originally, I was speaking to "rationalthinker". Millions of years is not a "belief": its a conclusion based on observation and evidence. Otherwise I'm not sure I understand what you are really talking about as it's not articulated very clearly, sorry.

Joseph Ang ***** Wow, are you guys seriously so butt hurt ? But what I said there was a *JOKE* to lure in the "What ever I say is true, I don't give a F**k" people here and Who in their right mind would use "THE CREATIONIST ARE COMING" as a rebuttal to any of the comments in this comment section ?! Thus, please, chill out, somethings in life are to be taken seriously but something as stupid as somebody posting about something that you don't like shouldn't be taken seriously...

+brobaron Evolution is a scientific theory. Creationism is a religious philosophical idea. This is settled in courts in the US. It's like fulminology is a science which tries to find natural (non-supernatural) reasons for lightning. "Thor causes lightning by striking his hammer with an anvil" is a religious or philosophical idea. Both have reason and evidence which could be presented. Sorry - you just seemed to be equating the two as if they were the same.

I love the fact that crash course isn't afraid to mention the very basics of extensive evolutionary research and comparative anatomy.
