The problem here is that neither of those two men understood The Philosopher's Metaphysics before they went and read Thomas. They consistently show a misunderstanding of Metaphysics through their misuse of terms.

What about Jay Dyer? Does he understand? He thinks Thomas has serious holes in his work.

@@lkae4 I haven't heard Dyer talk on the topic, but so long as he uses his terms consistently and explains where his use of a term might differ from Aquinas/Aristotle, I have no problem with that. I'm not on the "Everything Aquinas said is perfect" bandwagon and I am willing to entertain well formulated counter points...which is not what was presented in this dialogue between White and Wilson.

@@xdude736 Dyer said people used to point out problems in Thomas's divine simplicity arguments to him when he was Roman Catholic. He would just point to other parts of Thomas's writings that stated otherwise but didn't address the original issue. Dyer was finally able to get rid of the anxiety and mental gymnastics when he dropped Thomas.

I wonder how they justify believing that Christ has two wills and that the trinity is co-equal and co-eternal. None of that is explicitly spelled out in Scripture.

This is ridiculous. By their own creeds and confessions they reject even the idea of orthodoxy. Like, they're not saying as Protestants that they're correct, they're saying that everyone is wrong and that no one can be right and no one has the authority to define the boundaries of orthodoxy. This is so stupid.

As an Evangelical Thomist. I've been reading and studying the Angelic Doctor since 2002. I actually cannot understand why he should be rejected by these guys. Aquinas is certainly one of the best on such things as God's simplicity.

When you guys got to the part about "the Son being sent by the Father" and how Dr White said that this shows the submission of the Son to the Father, and then you guys said that it's just as true to say that the Son sent Himself, would an Orthodox like Jay Dyer who believes in the Monarchy of the Father agree with that statement that the Son sent Himself? Just curious if this is a decent apologetic point against the Orthobros

On the goofy reading of Ontological Arguments: James White really out-did himself there; that was really dumb! There was one Cartesian out in the wild who actually did hold to White's "if it's concievable, it must actually exist" premise: the Benedictine monk Dom Robert Desgabets (an old professor of mine happened to be one of the only major scholars of him) He wrote an extensive defense of Fr. Malebranche, but his view was so cooky, even Malebranche wanted nothing to do with him! (And if you have ever read any Malebranche, this is saying something; Malebranche is quite out there)

Around 40:00, also isn't presenting the procession of the Word and the Spirit as the terminus of the intellect and will in God only an analogy? I think Doug is not only misunderstanding the Augustinian analogy but is making it more literal than probably St. Augustine would take it (I have not read the work though, I assume this). I apologize for any misunderstanding since St. Thomas and the Scholastics are not my main area of interest most of the time.

It is not an analogy, that was the error of Durandus...it is Catholic Doctrine that the Spirit properly proceeds from the will of God.

The spirit of this video is all wrong. Wilson and White were not being nearly as polemical as your manner assumes. More importantly neither of them are Thomists hence the "misusing" terms.

White & Wilson’s entire career, livelihood, and notoriety is quite literally due to polemics against Catholicism. The entire existence of their man-made reformed tradition is to that very end.

@breddythewinner well there you are just mistaken (or being too hyperbolic), especially in the case of Wilson. White does have a reputation for debate, but even that extends beyond Catholics (to include Muslims, Mormons, JWs, etc.). Wilson's notoriety these days comes chiefly from his political hot takes.

@@MilitantThomist The church doesn't "need" to decide, because it's simply not Biblical. In fact it ios heretical by scriptures own claims. Christ is the only High Priest we need.

@@ministryoftruth1451 Catholics don’t disagree that Christ is the only high priest. The fact that we do not need any other high priest than Jesus, does not negate the fact that we still need the church.
