kira get ran over by the ambulance is perfect in more ways than you mentioned. Not only is it because of his sheer bad luck, but Kira is a character who lived his whole life trying to stay as hidden and unseen as possible, and it's due to the fact that the driver didn't see him at all that he perished. Pure dramatic irony.

I might be assuming too much here but I think a big part of it is bias. A lot of people that I see who claim Valentine is a good guy tend to be American themselves, so I think the idea that his motive is to try to make the United States a utopia makes his goal seem noble to them. I feel like if SBR took place in a different country and Valentine had the exact same motive, focusing on whatever different country the part takes place in (let's say China, Afghanistan, Mexico, etc) there would probably be less people claiming his actions to be justified and heroic

Another thing about Diavolo's death: he's implied to be supernatural since birth. He was born with supposedly unexisting father from a pregnancy that lasted 2 years, and lived in a body as a secondary personality. Also he killed his own mother, his girlfriend, and tried to kill his daughter, burned a village in his youth, made the biggest criminal organization in Italy which sells drugs to anyone including children and is named after the devil himself. I would never be confident enough to say he doesn't deserve to be inprisoned in eternal torture, something that could be called "hell". He is purposefully created as this extremely mysterious character with vague origins, he might as well be something completely differemt from a normal human being, much worse then we think.
@wv5853
@wv5853 3 месяца назад
People with DID often forget there pasts or backstories I’ve heard so Maybe all the traumatic parts were erased and his backstory is told from Doppios perspective witch is why so many important details are lift out. He’s kinda meant to be mysterious and unknown events suit his character and his disorder or theoretically his possession. Either way I’ve never thought of that perspective before but the unknown part of Diavolo’s character is probably my favorite part of him.
@megadangerman3170
@megadangerman3170 2 месяца назад
Interesting take on diavolos torture, however I still believe that eternally dying is just a little too much for a murderer who is "named after the devil", but only really is an above average mafia boss who sells drugs to kids. I think nothing a villain does will ever compute to infinitely dying unless they eternally tortured someone themselves. When it comes to Diavolo carrying assassinations on his own, he tends to make things quick and painless for people as he cares more about the success of his organization rather than making people suffer. I think a lot of people dehumanize him because of his allegory to the devil and the classic "selling drugs to kids," along with the fact that he tends to avoid fate, but if anything I think he's just as human because of his natural fear of failing his goals and the lengths he will go to in order to succeed in growing his organization and his control. YES, I think diavolo is evil but I do not see him as "true evil" in any way.
@GrandMasterEdge777
@GrandMasterEdge777 2 месяца назад
@@megadangerman3170 that's understandable, I get where you're coming from, and I believe you have a good point. I respect your opinion. Just to defend my view again though, in response to your comment which seems to be devaluing a bit what I meant; he's not "just" an above average mafia boss who's "named after the devil". He is a mysterious man born from no known father, from a 2 year pregnancy a woman had inside a prison, and lives as a secondary (secretly dominant personality) who commits the most horrible crimes since his youth, with no regards to humanity at all. He doesn't always kill quickly and efficiently too like you said, as seen when he buries his own mother alive with stitched mouth. He might as well be a real devil. We know supernatural concepts exist in Jojo, so his extremely mysterious origin which is completely unique to him, could be implying he's not even human. Whether he is or not, is not even completely confirmed when you consider all his unique characteristics. But even if we exclude that in specific and come back to the standard idea that he is still a normal human being despite his strange origins, I still see him as truly evil, like Speedwagon says about Dio "he isn't evil by circumstances, he was born evil." You might not see him as "true evil" but as Jotaro pointed out earlier in the series "evil is when you use the weak for your own gains" and Diavolo's entire life is about that. The powerful boss making literally everyone his pawns, even family and lovers, with zero regard for their lives and human dignity. They're either a step for his glory or deserving of discarding, doesn't matter what type is used. He only brings about disgrace for people, many times even inside his organization, for the convenience of maintaining power and profit while being completely faceless. If he were to stay alive longer, he would most likely continue to be this source of a tortuous life for many people. Of course ignoring all the evil assassins that torture people for fun that he employes like Cioccolata, is totally up to the individual, but completely negating his blame on that would be conveniently turning a blind eye for his responsibilities as boss. All other main villains and other horrible characters are humanized enough to be shown struggling and suffering on life's hands either in their backstories or in the face of defeat when opposing other characters. But then again, which type of human being would be deserving of eternal torment like mitologies and religions always talks about will always be complex topic in which the answer differs a lot depending on who you ask. At the end of the day I'm just one more in the group who prefers not to take time lamenting the endless suffering of someone who haven't shown even one good quality at least as human being in the entirety of his participation in the story, instead of the group who still reminds him as a normal human being, who did evil trought life, but not the worst evil he could, and is still deserving of compassion at least to be forgiven from eternal punishment. Which goes back to why I understand your comment and respect your opinion. Eternity is a long time after all. I'm just not capable of being compassionate towards Diavolo enough to oppose his already decided judgement, as I see him as an implied devil much more then a normal human being, figuratively and possibly even literally like I mentioned before. I don't usually make lengthy comments, so I'm grateful for whoever reads them all the way trought. I hope it's good food for thought.

I absolutely love that idea, so it really hurts to have to point this out... Bruno never actually found out that he was destined to die from Rolling Stones. In a way, Fate was testing them for the trails ahead. The stone was the means to sharp them for the fight ahead, or an easy path to spare them trail they aren't ready for. Divaolo grasp on itatly was iron grip and King Crimson ability of cheating Fate. The only way good to break it was through torment, trails, overcoming, and sacrifice. And it wasn't going to be easy. Breaking the stone demonstrates the length gang will have to go through to defeat Divaolo. If they couldn't beat the stone, they certainly couldn't beat Divaolo. With Giorno awaken his stand, mark a change the unavoidable battle of good vs evil. Consider Bruno death, if he was loyal to Divaolo, Giorno would had to kill him. And betraying the Divaolo is a battle you can't fight without taking losses.

My main gripe is just that it comes after the end of the story. I'm just somebody who doesn't care for that recontextualization thing happening and I don't like prequel stuff. I prefer good foreshadowing. Of course, I also just didn't like part 5 as much as the other parts anyway. It's still real good, don't misunderstand me. Concepts like "fate" and "destiny" and thwarting those concepts are just kinda hard for me to wrap my head around, so an entire arc about that featuring a villain who's power is all about fated actions and such just wasn't up my alley.

jojo fans are the type of people who watch the main villain: 1. Sell drugs to children 2. Order Chiocollata to kill Gelato e Sorbet in probably the most gruesome and brutal way possible 3. Attempt to kill his own daughter solely to keep his indentity safe 4. Kill Bruno Bucciarati (which is later "revived" by Giorno's power and his own will, but ultimately deteriorates as the part progresses until his death) 5. Kill Abbachio (Fr this time) 6. Severely debilitate Polnareff and cut any contact he could have with Jotaro 7. Kill Narancia (also fr) 8. Be the main reason on why Doppio's life was "bad" and the they get mad when he gets punished.

He has died, and will die, for more seconds than he was ever alive, for more atoms than he ever touched, and far more times than he broke fate. I’m not saying he shouldn’t be punished, but at some point torture becomes cruel. Diavolo reaches that point no matter what you think is adequate for him.
@kyupiangel90
@kyupiangel90 4 месяца назад
I think the point made in the video is very strong: Diavolo COULD SCAPE FATE. Meaning that, even if he was dethrowned as a whole mafia's boss, he would still be able to scape whatevee punishment was sent his way, thanks to his very specific stand, that makes him able to scape any situation by re-positioning himself elsewhere. The ONLY way to punish a guy this cruel, insensitive, and inhumane, is with a punishment he would not be able to scape. ¿It was the most humane way? No. But it was the only way to stop him from being a monster... A enclosure of fate itself that was not able to be controlled by him. (Like, imagine someone like him with the power to manipulate, not his fate only, but others' fates as well, thanks to make his stand more powerfull with the arrow… He would become a DIO 2.0 VERY quickly.)

Nah. It is still insane that Diavolo has had the worst fate in all of fiction. Yes, the point is he tried dominating fate so he was punished by fate. But morally speaking, he deserves a torturous death. NOT ALL OF THEM! Like even his will resets to zero: He can't even get accustomed to how painful it is. It just looks extra weird given he's not even the most evil villain in the series, not even the most evil in his own part.

2:55 I feel like it also goes down to simplicity of the words. For most people Ripple is a harder word to use and remember than Hamon and for a lot of non-native speakers, both words are likely meaningless. When it comes to Kaiten and Spin - it's other way around. Spin is easier to pronounce and remember and it's also a much more common word. Being released at different times and different (fan)-translation styles - also probably affected it. 4:50 We had few stand users that would be nice as Hamon users, mostly due to the nature of their stands. Like Dragon's Den for me feels like a logical example, where stand isn't necessarily the main power of its user. We also had few other stand users, whose power was more area/effect based or who had drone-stands - not necessarily actively offensive. I mean, we kinda got that in part 7 tbh. Spin is a similar concept to Hamon and for many users - it's a secondary power or a power that buffed their stand abilities. We could have more stand users that fought alongside their own stand. Or stand users with more non-combative, but useful abilities that could fight by themselves when needed.

I can’t explain how absolutely cathartic it is to hear someone point out the definitive fact that, yes actually, Valentine IS VERY EVIL. This particular opinion has always been especially concerning to me when you apply the way these people look at him to real-life politicians. But even without bringing it into real life, it’s patently ridiculous to think that the man who wants to redirect all misfortune onto the rest of the world for the sole benefit of his own country (and by virtue of being the president of that country, himself) is a good person, even if you somehow ignore all of the murder and SA and other flat out evil stuff he does that just can’t be justified. What a reveal it is to see that guy never even read Part 7 too, lmao. You can’t make this shit up.

Here's my hot take: Sand/Soundman from part 7 suddenly becoming a villain, getting killed off, and In a Silent Way's ability were the biggest disappointments of part 7. A Native American stand user had SO much potential, yet it ended up JUST being Echos act 2 again. I should mention that I don't have any problems with reusing stand abilities. Stone Free and Doggy Style are shown doing things the other hasn't, and I often feel like Doggy Style was made because Araki thought of things that the same stand could have done, but didn't want to bring back the same character/stand. In a Silent Way does feel like an evolution of the concept of making onomatopoeia physical, but it simultaneously doesn't do many new things nor feels original, so it ends up in this bland middle-ground that just doesn't feel very cool. Another thing that hurts In a Silent Way is the fact it is used so little. If there's anything I love about Jojo, its abilities being used in creative ways. I can think of exactly one way In a Silent Way was used creatively (the noise creatures), and most of that was purely because it was partnered with Scary Monsters. I genuinely wouldn't have minded In a Silent Way if we saw it being used more, letting us see unique/creative ways it could use its abilities. Yet alas, Soundman was killed off, so he'll forever be left in the "had potential" box.

My hot take is that I kind of hate the way a lot of incidental objects are drawn in parts 8 and 9. Things like cars, food, and certain animals or plants that don't reappear look like they were xeroxd photos or traced rather than being drawn by Araki. The "Let's go Look at Watches!" chapter in Jojolands is the pinnacle of this, with some of the watches being so photorealistic that it gives off a "2D character in live action" effect, where it looks too much like the more stylized characters simply shouldn't be able to touch or hold those real-ass watches.

Idk if this has been covered already, but i'm confused on how Joseph could have had hermit purple in part 2 according to an interview. The interview says that if the stardust crusaders traveled back in time, they would see the stand, but Joseph himself doesn't see it in part 2. If the stand was actively being used, then that would make Joseph a stand user, and so he must be able to see stands, especially his own. In the other hand, if the stand was dormant, then Joseph wouldn't be able to see it, but other stand users wouldn't see it either.

The Doctor Who take is baffling to me, because telling someone to start from the beginning of the original run of doctor who is literally impossible to do, having started in black and white in the 1960s, half the original episode tapes were just wiped, and don't exist anymore, and going on until the 1980s the show built up so much context and lore that it became completely opaque and inaccessible by the end, which is why the 2005 reboot wiped everything out and started from the beginning, set in the aftermath of the 'time war' that destroyed both the Daleks and the Time Lords, allowing them to be organically reintroduced later without the baggage that came with them from the 40+ years of previous stories preceding them.

Hot take: For me, the colored versions of the manga are better for reading than the black and white, because I just can't understand what's going on in a scene if it's all just two colors. I don't care about weird color choices or lost detail, any color helps me differentiate objects in a scene and visualize it in my head better. That being said, I do read JoJolands and OPM in black and white.

I can't speak for every jojo part but I think it might come down to reading digital vs reading physical. I started reading part 8 digitally in black and white and just like you there was a lot of panels mostly during action scenes that I couldn't understand at all so switched to colored. Though more recently I have picked up the part 4 volumes and have no problem understanding what's happening. With the actual books the pages are the intended size and you can properly make out the "sketchiness" of each panel. It's easier to make out what's happening in highly detailed drawings without the lines blurring into a solid black blob like they did on my screen.

Hi, Doctor Who fan here, two things: 1. The 2005 version of Doctor Who ("New Who" or "NuWho") is in fact a continuation of the original ("Classic") series. Characters from the Classic series re-appear (most notably the Doctor of course, albeit in different incarnations, but that's business as usual), events that transpired during the Classic series are referenced on a regular basis, and some plot threads are even picked up and continued or iterated on. NuWho being a continuation of the same show, in the same continuity, but by a new different cast & crew isn't really comparable to Steel Ball Run being by the same creator and contributing to the same theme & ideas but set in a different continuity. 2. Most Doctor Who fans who have watched both Classic and NuWho do not recommend starting with the very beginning of the Classic series. Doctor Who is not a show where there is an expectation that you will watch ALL of it. It's a long-ass show. Classic alone is roughly 500 hours of viewing time. The frequent change in showrunner, writers, cast, etc. means that you WILL like some of the eras more than others, and it is very likely there will be some eras that you just don't enjoy. There are inevitable structural, fundamental changes that are made. E.g. as someone with ADHD I really struggle to watch the longer serials of the Classic series, which were original written with the intention of one episode being seen per week. (If you watched it using this schedule starting this week, you could be done by late 2037!) I personally think that the original 1963 run of the show is pretty underrated by a large chunk of the fanbase (very similar to Phantom Blood, actually) but I don't blame anyone for just not enjoying it- it's antiquated, that's not an insult, it's just true. Quite frankly, the differences between eras means that the number of people who watch the 1963 episodes and go "Cool, I like that, I'm going to keep watching" is going to be a LOT smaller than the number of people who watch the Series 1 from 2005 and go "Cool, I like that, I'm going to keep watching." I understand the spirit of what you're getting at by encouraging people to start with the beginning of certain franchises, but with Doctor Who, I just can't agree with the blanket assertion that people should start at the VERY beginning. It's not actually going to facilitate people watching Doctor Who and finding the eras that they love. Okay, sorry, rant over. Excellent video as usual, loved to hear your responses to these hot takes, ESPECIALLY the Valentine one (urgh). Hope you have a good rest of your day!

The whole thing with Funny Valentine, which I *think* Araki partly mentioned in that interview you referenced, is that he does what he does because he’s a sadist. The rape of Lucy is entirely pointless, but Valentine attempts it anyway. Why? Because he likes the pain inflicted as much as the “good” that results from it. The sexual pleasure he would feel from raping Lucy is just as, if not more, pleasurable to him as the pain it inflicts. From this and other actions we can draw the conclusion that he specifically enjoys inflicting pain on other nations as much as helping the U.S. to prospers

Idk how people don’t understand that stands are a manifestation of your battle spirit. it’s not just an exclusive ability only you can have which is exactly why two people who have similar ways of battling and thinking have the same stand TYPE. Because just like jotaro says it’s the same type of stand as star platinum. Blood relation has no ties to stand ability it only has a chance of determining whether or not you develop one to begin with since stand users are more commonly descended from other stand users.

5:40 tbh dio using a steamroller isnt really random, its actually kind of a smart move since the steamroller not only crushes jotaro but it lets dio avoid counterattacks from star platinum since it acts as a barrier protecting him

Kinda late I guess but might as well leave it here. 1: Joseph should have died at the end of part 3 2:GER wouldn't have been able to stop Made in Heaven

1: Robbing Jouske the chance to meet his biological father and develop a bond with him is kind of fucked up? like, its probably an overlooked part of part4, but Jouske being a bastard informs so much about his character. He has no friends at the beginning of the part! When he has the chance to meet Joseph in person he has the chance to form a connection, something especially important since his only male role model, his grandfather, dies earlier in that part. It's a nice bit of character growth that I wouldn't want to remove On the opposite end, having Joseph come to Morio and basically become a father to Shizuka makes up for his (assumedly) unintentional abandonment of Jouske. If he died at part 3 and then in part 4 we find out that he had messed around with Suzie and had a kid, it would besmirch his character without chance of redemption, leaving a sour note I don't think I agree with you 2: I absolutely agree with you here. Requiem stands are hyper-specific by design, leaving them weak to anything outside of their use case in part 5. As far as we know, GER must know the combatant and be directly attacked to activate. Nothing hints us to believe GER works like WoU

For 2: my hot take to your hot take: it would technically have been able to... but literally only for Giorno. Not for anyone else. (Which imo is a fate worse than death, just imagine that for all of your power... at the end that power stops you from following into the next universe. You're just stuck in normal speed as everyone ELSE around you gets slowed down toward absolute stillness, leaving only suddenly-immortal animals and normal plants until you die, however old that ends up being, and on the flipside, everyone ELSE sees you rapid-aging and moving at superspeeds to match the world's current one, and to them you basically either ran off on your own and disappeared, or they were unlucky enough to watch you wither and die.)

@Vespercold Well, my reason for the first take is that: 1. It would have made for a more dramatic and realistic ending, not that Jojo is known for realism, but also because 2. Joseph doesn't really do much in Morio. Him and Josuke spent only an episode worth of time together, and the rest of the time, he kinda just hangs around. Making his revival at the end of part 3 kinda unnecessary. I don't really mind the way things turned out, but I thought it would be interesting to consider this what if.

Being the biggest Stone Ocean fan of all time (trademark) it really disappointed me how much shit part 6 got, I'm glad people have come around to it and decided to actually READ it when they talked about it Plus, I think 6 had some of the best fights in the series! Its a really fun part

With the part 4 sky criticism, yellow in fiction and literature is often associated with insanity and craziness, which makes sense in a part about a crazy serial killer in a twin peaks style mystery town

Valentine's plan is a very direct metaphor for imperialism, so it's telling that the English-speaking, probably mostly American readers of SBR don't see it as evil.

My hot take is this........ King Crimson is not confusing. I feel like people are just over analyzing it and bungling what happens. But I feel it's one of the more straightforward stands.

I like to think that both The World and Star Platinum's "Time Stop" is closer to The Flash's "Flashtime" than actual stopped time. It would make sense for two stands which have their speed emphasized throughout the part (eg: D'arby the Gambler) to be able to grant super speed instead of just entirely stopping time outta nowhere.

About skipping parts 1 and 2, I don't know why you would, since Jonathan is the moral pillar which supports the ethics of all other protagonists after him, while Joseph establishes the level of cunning and strategic thinking that all the others would need to win against their antagonists. As for part 4, Chase is an amazing opening because it highlights that, under all that slice of life and lighthearted comedy, there is a level of cruelty and horror that hasn't been seen a lot before. Meanwhile, Kira's death was not only thematic with him pushing his luck too much, but it's also thematic with Josuke and his friends, as they try their hardest to keep everyone alive and only punished their antagonists so far as to keep them in check. With Kira being killed by an ambulance, they didn't have to bloody their own hands and thus, they didn't have to deviate from their own morals

my main qualm with part 6 is how the anime was released. i need to eventually rewatch it now that there isn't month breaks in between, but i feel like my first experience wasn't as good as it could've been if an episode came out every friday

Hot take: it would have been more thematic to have Jonathan's theme playing with Emporio instead of Jotaro's.

It's still kinda shocking going from hamon to stands, but it adds to the randomness of the series
