Too many people refuse to open their minds and research alternatives to the standard. Working smarter, and maybe not as hard, doesn't mean you are doing less work or substandard work. I saw the original install video and thought it was great. Thank you for your quality content.

I got some resistance from fencers trying to do just what you showed for no dig vinyl. No one here; I met so far, wants to do it that way for me. Some laborers never heard of these tools. I believe it saves money for easy repair unlike the other way of digging up the old post and putting in new ones. I decided to buy the tool myself and get it done after checking with National Grid and having the lines marked before I start. Keep up the innovations to do some work in a safer, faster, and more efficient way. Especially if it can save your back from digging. Hooah!

May I ask, comparing vinyl install with cement vs the no dig with steel posts and donuts which route costs more? I assume much less labor with no dig but maybe the metal posts cost more than the cement?

It’s like Wyoming invented WIND, we drove I80 every summer from 1966 on for the next 30 years, watching I80 get built. The rumor was that it took 30 years because of the wind . . . And that overlooks the snow and wind combo.

Not sure if you mentioned this, but the diagonal brace on the gate is incorrectly installed. On the hinge side, the brace must start at the bottom and run up so that it resembles a truss and is actually loaded when someone pulldown on the gate. Other than that, your work looks very neat.
@SWiFence
@SWiFence 2 года назад
Thank you! You're absolutely right that the gate looks wrong--but that's because they're braced on each side. The brace on the opposite side runs the opposite direction, so they can be installed either way. 👍🏻

After doing this for over 40years you didn't short cut anything. There are many different ways to install fences. Just like you showed. People that do not do it everyday just see it one way. Different regions of the country can have diverse attributes. Soil type, wind, weather, and even preference. I remember either in late 90's early 2000s loads of aluminum fence was shipped from California to NC because the region in California only dealt with steel. Go figure. Always keep an open mind and diversify.

How about the diagonal brace on the gate? It started at the hinge side and goes down to the latching side? Is this because vinyl works better under tension than under compression? I’m not saying it’s wrong I’m just curious because if it were made of wood it wouldn’t be optimal. So to my eye it looks wrong
@SWiFence
@SWiFence Год назад
No worries, those gates confuse everybody who doesn't see them in person. They've got a brace on each side, and each side runs the opposite direction. That just gives us the most flexibility for install. You're right though--if that were the only brace it would be backward.

Would you ever consider digging a hole for the 2 3/8 steel post and concreting that? Then put the donut and slide the vinyl over it? A bit more expensive but a smaller hole for the average DIY'er, less cleanup, and you would still retain the easy repair capability if a vinyl post ever breaks.
@SWiFence
@SWiFence Год назад
That's going to get more expensive as you're not offsetting the cost of the steel with a concrete savings. If we're pouring concrete we're just going to stab the posts straight into it.

One more quick question, because I was thinking steel posts would be better for endurance in Oklahoma; what would be any cause of the post rusting in the ground that could be avoided? I see that sometimes with galvanized fence posts; they tend to rust out over 10 years. What would be your feedback on that?
@SWiFence
@SWiFence 2 года назад
I have seen that myself sometimes--but not very often. You could always use some Galv Pro spray over the rusting spots. It would still take and immense amount of years for the post to completely rust out.

what's your opinion on Quick Crete? Have you had any experience with Quick Crete? That's commonly used in Oklahoma, and I've used it and their extra strength blend from Lowe's. Just wondering what if any your experience has been using them? I used some of the extra strength blend when I set a dozen auger anchors for my trailer a couple of years back, and it seems to have done real good. I have a lot of sandy soil where I am in Oklahoma, but I was wondering if you have any experience with it since you do fences for a living. I really like the video Dan done on this fence. i just watched it, in fact and saw this update video on it. My name is Dan as well. I liked the whole system they used to install this 6' fence. I might have to get some 8' post if I were going to do it in my yard; with my soil type, I may need 4' in the ground instead of 3, but this turned out really good in my opinion. I've been in some facet or another in construction all, my life, and I'm 56 now, but I've been doing electrical work for the last 10 years now. Must my 2 cents on it, but I'm curious if you have any opinion on the Quick Crete blend?

How do I fix? Hurricane Ian snapped about every other 5”x5” cemented vinyl posts at the ground level. I was gonna pull them out w/ skid steer or use a farm jack but I keep hearing the vinyl will break or post will slip right out of the concrete????
