Pretty much anything from 5fdp. I can’t really say that they aren’t talented because they can play, it’s just that they don’t really do anything interesting or exciting with their songwriting or musical ideas (to me). One of the reasons I love Slipknot is because I can see them branch out into other styles and keep it relatively interesting. I am a big fan of vol. 3 and their last album WANYK because they had the confidence to write different sounding songs like “spiders” or “my pain” and still have heavier sounding material like “orphan” and “solway firth” and “not long for this world”. Even though they might not always hit the nail on the head or execute it perfectly, they still have an interest in not trying to remain stagnant and repetitive. And for that I can at least respect their efforts But bands like 5fdp and disturbed and six feet under just stay in their lane and all of their stuff is really interchangeable and not very distinct. I just don’t really get anything out of it personally. No hate to anyone who does. (Also thank you guys for introducing me to Temple of Void, been jamming that recently)

In Flames hurts the most for me, Jotun was the song that got me into metal. I hung in until 'Soundtrack to Your Escape' (barely), but from then on it was a completely different band. Every release after that I prayed and hoped they would come back to some of their original sound, but it's just disappointment after disappointment.

@@thrallsofmetal That's a fair assessment. For me the Lunar Strain through Clayman era is great. The Reroute to Remain through Come Clarity era is good. I can stand some of the later in flames catalogue(up to sounds of a playground at the absolute latest) but pretty much solely because I enjoy the guitar parts on songs like drenched in fear and tilt. They sound like a weird hybrid of metalcore, melodeath and alt rock in their 2006 plus stuff. I actually noticed how much Anders friden sounds like Olly Sykes(bring me the horizon) when he sings certain parts (like in the bridge of all for me on sounds of a playground) Def not the melodic death giants they once were

I wholeheartedly disagree with your choice of Diabolus. Maybe it's because I discovered slayer before I learned to be very discerning and had just come off of my nu metal phase but i thought it was good. Definitely not their best but I dont get the comments about the lack of urgency and energy (Scrum?, Point?) It even opens up with Bitter Peace which is a ripping thrasher if I've ever heard one. I've always looked at this record as Slayer showing the world what nu metal could sound like if it were actually good. Spot on with all the others though.

@thrallsofmetal
@thrallsofmetal 3 года назад
Necrotic Nick- Strangely enough, I was in my nu metal phase when I got Diabolus but that wasn't what I wanted from Slayer. I wanted that hyper aggressive fast sound again because that was kinda my escape from a lot of the more groove centric metal that was out then. Bitter Peace is a banger and Scrum and Point are decent but the rest of it is a really lackluster listen. It just felt like all the energy had left the band for the most part and they'd been bucking trends for years but here they were settling in one. Yeah, it's still not for me.
@homunculusprime647

@@thrallsofmetal Yeah, I suppose in light of some of the other songs on the record I can see your point though I do really like Stain of Mind. I don't have any metal friends so your content is quite refreshing. Keep it up!
@carlosjantarada7212
@carlosjantarada7212 2 года назад
I agree. More than Nu Metal I think many of the tracks there are hard core inspired (lots of Biohazard influences especially on Stain Of Mind, Love To Hate, Wicked and Screaming From The Sky). On the other hand there's a couple of Nu Metal drum lines here and there (Death's Head is a blatant example although I kinda like the song) and others that mix some of the whispered intros with some elements of Divine Intervention (namely Desire and Overt Enemy). Other than that the remainder is pretty much in Divine's vein with In The Name Of God, Point and Scrum being cool enough songs as far as I'm concerned. Then there's Bitter Peace and man... this song wrecks everything in it's path. After the intro this is pristine top notch Seasons In The Abyss like Slayer and has a place in my band's top ten songs. So do I think Diabolus is a great album?... well not quite. IMO it lacks some consistency and there are too many songs I regard as fillers rendering it a bit uneven. On the other hand it features some great moments here and there, the Hard Core influence does not shock me and to be fair Slayer was the band that changed the least during the 90's from the so called big 4. IMO God Hates Us All (with the exception of Disciple, New Faith and Payback - all good songs) sounds way more Nu Metal to me (plus I really dislike its guitar sound) and apart from the songs I mentioned is absolutely dull. Not to mention Repentless that IMO is a void of ideas and a drag to listen for more than a couple of songs. But even those two albums aren't garbage per se. Only drop dead boring.
@homunculusprime647
@homunculusprime647 2 года назад
@@carlosjantarada7212 Yeah, I've never even considered this album to be nu metal. Definitely more hardcore/punk influence than anything. I mean they did just do that cover album just before this. Maybe that should be on this list, lol.

I remember discovering Celtic Frost through Morbid Tales 2 weeks prior and just falling in love with that style of Celtic Frost, in the next few days I bought To Mega Therion and I genuinely thought the band could do no wrong... And then I bought the Pandemonium record and my smile just faded away. I don't remember the last time an album offended and disappointed me in such a way. Sure, there's worse albums out there but that one hurt me. And the fact Jammin' Jon put Pandemonium above Emperor still boggles me.

Necrotic Nick- Yeah, I pretty much got them in the same order when the Century Media reissues came out and I was pretty disappointed as well. Not to be an elitist but, really? Psycho Sinner? I didn’t know that band had actual fans. Who the hell releases 9 albums on the same day? As for BFMV, they are as generic as metalcore comes. The only interesting thing they’ve done is Scream Aim Fire which was an admirable attempt at combining metalcore with thrash, but it had already been done way better by Trivium on their Crusade album. @@thrallsofmetal Big respect for you for saying that some Nu-Metal is okay. As a huge Nu-Metal fan I have big respect for traditional Metal in general, most traditional Metal is a bit too different for me to like but I do love Symphonic Metal with bands like Epica and early Within Temptation. Extreme Metal is far too abrasive for me, I respect it but it’s not for me. You probably wouldn’t like a lot of Nu-Metal that i like as I like the more Rap or Latin influenced stuff, but tbh Nu-Metal made its own fanbase that weren’t Metal fans or even Rap fans, I wasn’t a Metal or a Rap fan but I’ve grown to have a huge respect for Metal and Rap (good 90’s Rap that is, not the modern shit). On January 11th 2019 (a day that shall live in infamy) I ordered the CD from Amazon to complete the discography, downloaded the digital copy, and proceeded to listen to it all in one sitting. Now, I have amassed a fairly substantial music library over the last few decades and have purchased more than my fair share of bowl swirlers in that time but I swear to all that is unholy, not one of them made me as angry to listen to as St. Trashcanlid. I still have PTSD from the snare that Lars pounds relentlessly, the horrible vocals that an overly verbose Hetfield unleashes without tonal regard, song structures that were so repetitious I ran out of hair on my head to pull out and started working on my face, and the production........Christ almighty. Granted I haven't listened to many albums on this list but some I have and not one of them, not one, has ever made me both angry and fatigued to anywhere near that degree. Hahaha! You don't like Diabolus in Musica?? Boo this Man!! Boo him!! and you're also questioning divine intervention? Damn...let a band breath a little. So you think Diabolus is numetal Moreso than God hates us all? or christ illusion ? Or world painted blood? Diabolus is ,in my opinion, the last true Slayer album that didn't seem phoned in by the burned out Gods of Thrash. Tell me I'm wrong......

Yeah man! A conflicting Slayer opinion! Its good to read, kind of sick of the lock step" we all agree this was the best, and this sucks" perspectives. Slayer is one of my favorite bands ever, but the fans seem to be a tunnel-visioned bunch.

@@saltpeter7429 I love me some Slayer. I have fond memories attached to every song on all of their albums up to God Hates us all. I was fortunate enough to see them on both legs of their farewell tour here in Texas and then in Florida . oh, and definitely 4 to 5 other times including my first time at Ozzfest way back in 1999 . Thank you for taking the time to comment so I know that we are the only Slayer fans who watched this video ..

Necrotic Nick- Diabolus was the fist Slayer album I bought the day it came out and yeah, it disappointed the hell out me. I've given it a lot of chances but it's still a giant dud to me. I think God Hates Us all was better but the more true return to form for me was Christ Illusion. I still dig that album a lot. Different strokes for different folks though.

@@thrallsofmetal I definitely agree that music taste is unique to the individual . I'm just glad I commented on this video because I've listened Divine, Diabolus, God hates,and Christ illusion back to back to back trying to understand the dislike and I think Its that divine intervention and Diabolus was them trying to find a new sound and slowly started turning in a new direction that was still heavy and most importantly Sounded like Slayer to them and the fans. They couldn't just keep pumping ot Reign in blood so they started to experiment with sound and effects on the guitar on divine , for example at 1:45 on fictional reality that swimming guitar almost sounds like it belongs in a cannibal corpse song. Then on Diabolus it seems like Tom Araya is kind of in the spotlight on most of the songs and they are flowing in and out of the Trash metal box they grew so comfortable in. You can hear the seed being planted from the Stain of mind , overt enemy, perversions of pain, and love to hate you. That's a solid block of Slayer and why I love Diabolus In Musica. It totally bleeds into God hates up till their last album. I guess maybe I'm just not a good critic and I'm rambling on , but does this make any sense to anyone?

I agree with many albums, like morbid angel or machine head. But I really like "hating life" from Grave and Siren Charms was also a great album of In Flames. Sure it was a complete rupture, but in my opinion In Flames is one band that made so many changes and still remained awesome as hell! But sure I get why many people dislike siren charms, when I listened to it for the first time, I also felt like "wtf? This is kinda weird" but it grew on me by time. I also like "diabolus in musica" by Slayer, sure not one of their best albums, but not as bad as "undisputed attitude"
@thrallsofmetal
@thrallsofmetal 3 года назад
Necrotic Nick- While I appreciate both In Flames and Grave's earlier works (actually a pretty fair amount of Grave recent stuff too) both of those really missed for me. Hating Life sounded like a completely different band and just turned their sound into kinda faceless groove metal and In Flames essentially was a different band at that point. After Jesper left the fold the quality of the releases from In Flames really dropped for me and as many times as I've tried to give Siren Charms a chance it's still not my thing. With Slayer, at least Undisputed Attitude was just a cover album minus the abysmal Gemini, but Diabolus was all their writing. As a punk fan I can at least appreciate those covers for what they are.

@@thrallsofmetal yeah I can completely understand what you mean! I forgot to say that I got into In Flames and Grave when they had already released a bunch of albums. I think you can have a completely different point of view when you listened to the band from the very starting point. Yes you‘re right, Slayer did good cover versions on this one, but it‘s not my thing, although the band is one of my all time favorites. Your video was so great, can‘t wait for the next to come 😃

LOL Don't hate me Nick but, as a diehard Grave fan...i actually liked Grave's Hating Life. It was stripped down, mid tempo and considering it came out right in the middle of the Grunge Move-shit!! It literally held me from blowing my wig back in 96' the same can be said from the mighty Dismember's Maximum Killing Capacity same song structures, tempo's and i loved that album too for the same obvious reasons lol. BUT!! i will mention ONE album that makes me cringe to this day and was a travesty IMO was Entombed's To ride, die, and speak the truth that album pissed me off so bad when i heard it i smashed it on my driveway! That album right there was the band's demise from then on out with that Death n Roll BS as to me? it was the blueprint for In Flames demise along with many others.... Killer reviews bro keep em coming!

Necrotic Nick- No hate, bro. lol. I get what they were trying to go for on that one with the stripped down groove metal sound but man... it's pretty damn awful in my opinion. Being a metal band in the mid to late 90's was hell though and there was a lot of the whole "fight to remain relevant" since the trend was kind of to shit on metal at the time. Those Dismember and Entombed releases while not great, I think were a bit better. I still love the title track on To Ride but most of that album is just a weaker Wolverine Blues to me. Thanks again for checking out the vids, man!

Yeah I agree with everything on here. The ones I have heard of are all absolutely awful. Although I will say, I do think Catharsis is worse than Supercharger 🤣 I guess maybe it's cause at the time I hadn't listened to any of the late 90s/early 2000s Machine Head (mainly cause people just said not to bother, and I loved Burn My Eyes, The Blackening and Unto the Locust too much), but I heard Catharsis when it came out and it was so bad it made me kind of angry. Supercharger is shit aswell, but I didn't feel that bad about it, possibly cause I was going back rather than carrying any previous memories of the album. Just unmemorable garbage (Bulldozer is a good song though) And I'm still mad that I will never get back the 2 hours I spent listening to the whole of fucking Nostradamus. Yes I listened to the whole fucking thing, once, and never will again

You all have no idea what going from Burn My Eyes / More Things Change to the From This Day video was like. Supercharger made Burning Red seem like a solid album. Some old school dude told me he cried when he heard Youthanasia so I guess it was like that.

Turisas's 2013 album was such a slap in the face for me. The writing was on the wall with the terrible album name "Turisas2013" (yes, really), but nothing could have prepared me for something this uninspired and disjointed. St. Anger is at least consisent in its production quality and songwriting (for the better and for the worse), but that album was just mess through and through.

There are few times in my life where a new album came out that made me angry. The Haunted - Unseen is definitely in there. Man, I can't believe you bought that (but I've bought Risk twice so I can't talk too much shit) Surprised Digimortal from FF isn't on there. You go from those first 3 albums to THAT. Nevermore's last album was horrific compared to the past as well. Paradise Lost - Host as well. I'll defend Diabolus a little. I saw them on that tour (first Slayer show) and Bitter Peace opener was the first insane moshing I've ever seen. Perversions of Pain is my #1 super underrated Slayer track of all time lol. It's not a good album (Stain of Mind is horrible) BUT it's miles better than something like SUPERCHARGER. Regarding In Flames. I haven't listened to the last 3 albums. I'm done. I don't care. Call me if Jesper ever comes back.

Necrotic Nick- For awhile I was pretty ride or die with The Haunted and while Versus wasn't their best it was still pretty solid. I thought The Dead Eye was a cool, more experimental album too and that's kinda what I thought I might get with Unseen. What I got was pretty damn close to Unlistenable. I thought about throwing Transgression from Fear Factory on this one but I already had a lot in the running. I think that one is way worse than Digimortal honestly. I was fortunate to finally see Slayer in '04 when Dave came back and they were back to ripping it up then. When I saw them before at Tattoo the Earth they didn't play much of anything from Diabolus. Yeah, In Flames is pretty much dead to me now as well. I don't think they have it in them to write another classic sounding album again.
