Rest By Frank Ticheli

This beautiful, floating piece is essentially the concert band version of Ticheli's choral piece, "There Will Be Rest." This work, in turn, took its lyrics from Sara Teasdale's lyric poem of the same name. "Rest" was written to provide the audience with a sense of transcendent peace and happiness, and it certainly achieved that. Performed by the Texas State University Wind Ensemble.

Before we sightread this in my band class (I'm in the Wind Symphony at my school) my band director took a moment to tell us a story about a girl who goes to school with his son that died of cancer at age 16. He then said to us "Think of someone close to you who's died. If you have nothing else to play for, play for them." When we got to the moment of the piece I was in tears. I truly love making music. Nothing is as beautiful as music.

We played this at our honors band in high school. That was the most memorable concert I have EVER played. When we finished, there was not a dry eye in the audience. Even the conductor cried. Every musician knew... it was perfect. “There will be rest, and sure stars shining over the rooftops crowned with snow. A reign or rest, serene forgetting. The music of stillness, holy and low. I will make this world of my devising. Out of a dream in my lonely mind. I shall find the crystal of peace- above me stars I shall find.”

Played this for Onondaga Senior High All-County, with Dr. Mickleson, the man who commissioned Frank Ticheli to create this piece upon the death of his father. By fa,r it was the most emotional playing experience in my life. He had tears as we played it, and by the concert, not an eye was dry, neither in the band nor the audience. It was the moment I really truely understood the power of music.

Yes. I had a very similar experience playing this piece in honor band. Most connection I've had between emotion and art of my entire life. possibly the most "spiritual" moment of my life. I came back to listen to it in grief tonight and am feeling a bit of what I felt that night. music is an incredibly force

played this piece my sophomore year of high school and everyone was in tears (including my director who doesn’t show emotions) our directors words before giving us the piece were “think of people you love, play it emotionally, don’t think about the technical stuff that makes it so stuck in one spot, keep it moving, and most of all just feel the music” it was the most beautiful thing we played that year, we played and there was not a dry eye in the room at all

I may get yelled at via youtube haha.... But I think that music with mistakes is sometimes the most beautiful. It's in human nature to make errors, and sometimes they can be... Just beautiful. Personally, the recording really touched my heart and made me happy and I think that's what music is for. That's all. :)
