In Nairobi, a new restaurant is generating business and buzz - not just because of the food, but because of the staff. Robots serving dishes is the main attraction of diners who flock to the Robot Cafe. Juma Majanga reports. Camera: Jimmy Makhulo.

I am also NOT happy at all. We tend to copy nonsense forgetting our brothers and sisters who go to bed on empty stomachs. By bringing in robots - it's creating poverty not the other way around.

Pia wewe, dramatics acha. One robot cafe in the whole of Nairobi where restaurants pop up like kangaroos everyday is not killing our economy. It is diversifying though. Let Kenyans experiment with different things. If it's not your cup of tea, just go to a different restaurant tsk

I strongly dislike this situation. We are educated without having meaningful work opportunities. Kenya is not as developed as major countries like the USA, which has progressed over the past 300 years. Kenya, now 60 years since gaining independence, is still grappling with corruption and poor leadership. The growing social class divide is exacerbating inequalities and oppressing those in lower positions.

For God's sake, it is a speciality spectacle restaurant. It's like the restaurants in Japan where it is a pet shop for Shibuya dogs or cat cafe. Or an anime cafe where anime characters serve you, or a self service hotel. They don't make the majority, it's for the spectacle and to attract guests. You are being very dramatic about one robot cafe in the whole of Nairobi and Kenya where thousands of restaurants pop up every day

We have a Malaysian restaurant that uses robots. The robot bring the dish to our table and it sits there waiting for a human to place the food on our table. At one point, we just served ourselves and we reduced our tips due to poor service. Also in Nairobi, labour rates are so low, why would they do this besides being a marketing gimmick?

As an industry practitioner it's a welcome but with diminishing jobs opportunities, it's prudent to upgrade in phases as to not abruptly decommission the human labor. It's in order to assign the affected personnel to alternative departments

I find it's a smart move, having something that makes one stand out as a brand/business. The main purpose of a business is to solve something. Now, what do restaurants solve, especially if they're in each and every corner? Not famine. Hence the purpose of standing out, either through ambience, specialty recipes, gimmicks, innovations, chefs playing with food, etc.

I’m reminded of the self checkout kiosks in Walmart. Just another way to increase store profits by making the customer do more of the work the store would normally have to pay low wage employees to do. The difference being it takes longer to break even since the employees are generally paid a small percentage of the upfront cost to acquire and implement this technology. In the long run it may ultimately be cheaper, but there’s no case studies I can think of that shows a net ROI to the store. It’s like putting solar panels on your house. Sure, your energy bills will be significantly lower, but how long will it take before you’ve recouped the initial investment? Low wage worker turnover is a lot easier to predict on a spreadsheet. Now compare that to a robot that costs tens our thousands of dollars upfront with at least a decade before the break even period? Given the short time most restaurants are in business, you’ll likely have to sell the robots with the restaurant to recoup the investment. Just my .02. It’s a cool idea, but I’d need to see the numbers before I’m sold on it.
