Restoration of a broken Longines Evidenza Swiss Automatic Watch - ETA 2895-2 Service

This time I´m restoring a Longines Evidenza Automatic Watch.
It´s powered by the Longines L615, a modified ETA 2895-2 automatic movement. It beats at 28800bph, the lift angle of the balance is at 51° and it has a power reserve of 42 hours.
This model has a stunning "flinque-decor" on the dial, together with the blued steel hands this is definitly a watch to wear on those elegant dinners.
The previous owner of the watch dropped it to the floor - the glass is broken and the case has some bumps.
After polishing the case, the new glass can be glued in with UV-Adhesive.
Some of the bumps on the case will retain visible but there is nothing I can do about that.
Unfortunately those small glass fragments did find their way into the movement and stopped it from working.
Those glass fragments are everywhere...
I need to disassemble the whole movement, clean all the parts and re-assemble it with some fresh oil.
After reassembling everything, this watch is in a fantastic beat (+1 second per day) again.
I hope you liked this restoration, if so, like, comment and subscribe ;)

My father was a gear head. He would rebuild cars and sell them as a hobby. He had a passion for restoring old cars. He once told me that it wasn't work to him. It's how he unwound. It was therapy to him. When I was about 13 years old, I watched him meticulously take apart a carburetor. I was awe struck by the amount of parts ( springs, levers and so forth) that were in that thing. He took every piece apart, cleaned them and put it all together again. I'm 54 now and watching this video reminded me of my dad. It also left me awe struck again. Craftsman and craftsmanship like this is a rarer and rarer thing. When people like this man leave this Earth, it will be like a library burning down to ashes. Thank you for posting this video. You are a dying breed, sir.

My dad was a jet engine mechanic for 30 years in the Marine Corps. When he worked on our cars, it was amazing how detailed he was. The jets flew and the cars drove like they were brand new. I picked up some of his habits and am so thankful for him...that's why I love these videos, too.

The most under-appreciated thing about these videos: They are completely visual. I cannot express how much I enjoy the fact that there is NO narration, but important information is still given. Nicely done 👍

Well. Some information is given but not everything. He doesn't tell what a high amplitude on the timegrapher means and so on. This guy is like God for watches like PLASMO - plastic models for scale modelism, but I think many more information could be given provided that many of us, i guess included you, have a huge interest on how a watch works and why and so on. But for what you said about the no talking video... this is just soooo relaxing dude! There's another guy out there called Nekkid Watchmaker who actually talks in his videos but still, given the fact that his voice is so calm and low, it's just so relaxing!

Nooo. :P this new strap is soooo much more in line with the watch itself. Look at the hands, at the crown, etc. all these blue accents. that comes back in the strap. And the dial is white. Same as the stitching. Excellent choice. :P only thing i didnt like was that he did not repair the casing. All these dents could be polished out. Look at "the nekkid watchmaker" he can do it. Use sandpaper strips, etc. If it means new chrome .. he does that.. in a bath with chrome electrolyte and a machine, etc. It can be done.

I remember 50 years ago, there were many watch repairers who did this kind of work, taking watches apart and oiling the mechanism. They charged about 10-20 Hong Kong dollars (3-4 USD). Since the digital watches came about, one cannot find any more street watch repairers except for changing straps and batteries. It is a shame such delicate skills are now very rare.

So that's what a cracked sapphire crystal looks like... :) Seeing this, I can't believe how lucky I was when I dropped my Steinhart from just above waist height onto a bathroom-tile floor. It landed right on the (slightly domed) sapphire crystal. The movement went out of regulation (from +1 to +2s/d before to -7 to -9s/d after the drop), but the case and crystal were totally fine. I couldn't find any damage, even under a 6x loupe. It still taught me a valuable lesson to be much more careful with my watches in the future... :)
