I will certainly try my hand on a Prim soon. I’m glad to learn that my favorite place makes a fine watch.
It's changed quite a bit, I've been here for 20 years. If you ever swing back this way look me up i'll buy you a Pilsner. Glad you enjoyed the video and if you buy a prim get something with a Cal 66 or 68 pretty much the best they made
I understand your sentiment with this one. I’m a hobbyist myself and am currently restoring my father’s watch that he was wearing when I was born. Your video quality and narrative is spot on 👍👍. The only thing I wish you would consider is not letting down the mainspring by the ratchet wheel: one hiccup and that nice swirl mark around a pristine wheel will make you sick; just ask me how I know 😢. Lovely job
I've done it both ways in the past with the ratchet wheel and with the crown. I think i'll take your advice and do it via the crown in future, you are correct one slip and i'd be a very unhappy man. Hey nicely done...scrolled through the comments and found some answers to questions I had, as in "cap jewel on the balance". Personally, I just really dislike the non-shock settings...they make my tummy hurt. Great video though. Good to find another watch guy
I'm also not a fan of the non shock settings, massive pain. The later Prim watches had shock settings the Cal. 66 and Cal 68. Nice watches for the money, I'm a fan. I started this RU-vid thing to meet fellow watch people. I tend to bore the pants of non watch people lol Would you believe not everyone is interested in the advantages and disadvantages of the Breguet overcoil hairspring, what can i say some people are just weird. Couldn't remember which video had the split screens. A little of that is okay to me but too much of it is like a Pepsi commercial. Almost over stimulation. I think a great side shot would be one of you looking at the little teeny watch on the table. You're the first watch maker I've seen do a video that shows the size of the screw in their hand. It was mind-blowing!
The first time I worked on a watch, I could not believe the actual size of the parts. Even after looking through many display case backs over the years, it still came as a surprise. All my new content has splitscreen, and now I'm trying to strike a balance and tell a good story with the editing. I'm still learning, and a problem is that half the internet has the attention span of a goldfish, so I have to somewhat keep the editing on the rapid side. I'm still finding the right balance. Hey are you running one round of cleaning only in the solution? No isopropyl and demineralized water? What solution are you using and finally do you mix it with water? Thanks
I run a three step cleaning process for most stuff starting with Elma WF Pro Cleaner in an ultrasonic cleaner for around 10 - 15 mins then Elma Suprol Rinse also in an ultrasonic for around 5 mins. A waterless solution for rinsing watches after the cleaning process . The cleaning solution used before in the cleaning process is thoroughly removed. Any remaining Elma Suprol Rinse evaporates. Metallic surfaces are conditioned for optimum effect of lubrication. When that's done I put everything through a drying stage (fancy way of saying hairdryer lol) For cap jewels, hairsprings and the like i use Bergeon B Dip. The cleaning solutions i use are quite expensive, but i don't use a lot of them and they really do work with great results. The watch cleaner is designed for ultrasonic cleaners so no need for an expensive watch cleaning machine. Yes and no you didn't miss it I just didn't film it. I've filmed this sort of top cap balance jewel cleaning on some of my other videos. It's a tricky thing to do and on this watch i did not want to have to worry about 3 cameras and doing the work. The dog bed really did await if I messed this one up lol I'll go into more detail on the next watch. Hope you enjoyed the video.
I have a hard time with spotty faces. Eeesh. One watch repair show used a small sponge with distilled water. No harm done, dirt gone, viewer satisfied. Ah! Feel better just saying it. Thanks for your work. I'd like to get a wrist watch but can't afford $100s and can't repair it myself. Are there reputable watch repair sites in chech. I might be able to contact for vintage mechanical watches? Quartz watches don't work for me, I've ruined them all. Something about my magnetic field doesn't work with quartz watches.😊
It's sometimes possible to clean a vintage dial if there's dirt on the surface, but mostly it's not as the damage is on the varnish layer, so you'd need to strip the varnish, which will most likely remove the paint underneath. Then you're going to have to have the dial professionally restored and reprinted (arcstampfli.com/), and that will cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Vintage dial restoration is an art unto itself. The issue with vintage watches that no one talks about is that you need to have them serviced pretty much every time you buy them, and that will set you back $150 to $300 if you're lucky. It can get a lot more expensive than that. If you are looking for a day-to-day watch that's mechanical and not too expensive, I'd recommend a Seiko 5. They can be had new or close to new for around $100ish. They are solid watches that come with none of the issues that vintage watches come with.
