Manufactured by B&C, this stamp rolls by pressing the round stamping surface onto fabric or paper, and the stamped design is transferred without interruption. Moreover, it is an excellent tool that automatically applies ink to the stamped surface.
I know it is an old tool, but when I looked it up, I found that it is called "Festonneur automatique" which directly translates to "scallop shell automatic feeding device. I could not find out the date it was first manufactured.
When I looked at stamps sold on Etsy and other online retailers, I found a variety of stamp designs. From this, we learned that stamp designs were sold by various companies. Each design seemed to be inspired by the beautiful arc of a scallop shell. Well, I certainly recognize this kind of design from racing and other events.
This one I acquired had only one type of stamp, but I was pleased with it. The main purpose of the restoration was to polish the metal, repair the cracks in the handle, and copy the stamped part to keep the original.
The manufacturer's logo is stamped on the metal part supporting the roller. In an attempt to remove this plated part, electrolysis was performed in an acidic solution, but failed.
Sadly, a new pillar was made and the logo was etched. I was a little apprehensive since this was my first attempt, but I am happy to say that it was a success.
The plate to be etched was made by Press-n-Peel. It needs to be printed with a laser printer.
Handle
Since it was cracked, I performed kintsugi, a traditional Japanese restoration technique. The unique behavior of the lacquer was interesting, but extremely difficult to apply.
Mugi-urushi (wheat lacquer): A mixture of lacquer and wheat flour to make a low-viscosity adhesive or filler.
Choromoi-urushi: When wheat lacquer is mixed with wood powder, a highly viscous and strong putty is produced.
Gold powder: Actually brass powder. Real gold powder is very expensive.
Metal Parts
Metal parts were polished and nickel-plated to prevent rust. Especially for the rust on three nails, we used Nejisaurus Liquid by Engineer, a company famous for Nejisaurus. I recommend this product because it surprisingly removed the rust.
After completion
I also embroidered for the first time. There was some unexpected ink adherence when stamping, but I embroidered that as well. It was all difficult, but very exciting to try something new.
I made a big mistake this time, but I am happy that I learned a lot from this project and it turned out to be a very fulfilling project.
Thank you so much for watching.
