We are most of the time not believers ourselves, but obviously, protecting our country and heritage was always what mattered most. And so, having Notre Dame repaired was obvious. The only debate was about how to repair it. Some advocated for a modern style roof made of glass. Since, after all, all these old buildings have evolved along the centuries and millenia since their were first erected. And some considered that it was betraying the heritage of Notre-Dame to rebuild it to her 1857 appearance. On a side note, this is not only about France. If you like old historical churches that evolved throughout History, and don't know about it yet, look for Sainte-Sophie. Built by the early Byzantine Empire of Justinian in the 6th century. They still can't fathom how they could build this at the time. 5 centuries older than Notre-Dame and still standing. Although Turkey made it a mosquee and does not take good care of it, unfortunately.

I can understand the feelings. For some unexplainable reason, I had decided for the first time to follow the Holy Week Ceremonies at ND via RU-vid (KTO, etc) for the first time in my life; I am a Gramma from Canada and I usually watch Mass and Ceremonies locally. As I was watching on my portable, I saw the beginning of the smoke at the corner of my left eye on CNN (there was no sound, but I was dumbfounded). I remember the feeling of such abnormality and of "No, this cannot be!"I spent the whole night praying for the French people in such crisis and especially for its firefighters! Yes. I saw it in 1984 (at 24), 1999 (39), and 2015 (55). A week each time. I had thought that I was satisfied with my Paris experiences, as with London and Rome, which I have seen even more times, due to business trips. and that I would turn to the other cities I have seen fewer times (Edinbugh, Amsterdam, Bruges and Ghent, Florence, Milan, and Venice, etc.) and those I have never seen (Dublin, Copenhagen, Vienna, Prague, many German cities, Athens, etc.). I thought this 14 minute video would be enough to look into the history, fire, and re-building, but now I realize I could watch much more. A jewel in the crown of not only art and religion but of civilization itself, of human achievement, of humanity. I was raised Catholic but am no longer a religious person; still, I am spiriturally stirred each time I visit one of these major churches/cathedrals of Europe.

The only modern changes are non aesthetic from what I can tell. They're more in the techniques used to secure and protect the building, and they're minimal. Theoretically, when it's done, it'll just be a cleaner version of its former self. They can't fake centuries of visitors and environmental degradation to the timbers, but they can reproduce most of the methods and aesthetics used in initial construction. That said, I really hope I'm right... if they decide to "upgrade" the look anywhere on that treasure, they'll be doing a terrible disservice.

Well, if the cathedral wasn't to be repaired, there would have been an insurrection. Was almost the case already around 1840. I didn't visit Notre Dame, but visited the one in Strasbourg. Which is registered as a World Heritage at UNESCO too. And then there is the one in Chartres, equally registered at the UNESCO. And some more are. 45 sites are registered as a World Heritage at the UNESCO in France alone. While Notre Dame is indeed special, it is not as special as many foreigners tend to think. Even Germany has some great churches. Although many disappeared during WWII. And then, there is the Sagrada Familia in Spain, and the Westminster Abbaye in the UK.

It was truly heartbreaking to watch Notre Dame burn on live TV, especially when the steep hill folded over and collapsed in flames. I'm not religious, but felt empathy for the people who saw the building as a place of worship as well as a stunning piece of beautiful architecture. I'll never get to see Notre Dame myself, but it's reassuring to know that it'll be seen and appreciated in all its glory for generations to come. ❤

Notre Dame is a Catholic Cathedral, but it is much more. It defines so much that is good about both Paris and France. To me it also represents what it means in both history and Western Civilization as a whole. It is why the fire affected so many people around the world emotionally. It represents the best of us as a people.

I was shocked and saddened when I watched it burn. I'm an American, and I'm not a religious person, but I recognize the importance of Notre Dame in history and to France and the world. It was decided to rebuild exactly the same with the same materials as at the time. For lead, a rainwater retention basin is built to clean this water. As for the rest, apart from another fire, other than going to lick the roof with your tongue two or three times a day, the risks are zero.

It's fantastic to see thousands of people and large corporations band together to actually accomplish a goal without any signs of greed or manipulation taking place. I'm so happy that they decided to respect the original form of the cathedral and that it's been getting some much needed attention and respect from a wider community. God bless France, the French and Notre Dame de Paris! because even if I am not French, this unique and sumptuous cathedral, a heritage of human history, had to be preserved, it is also a little bit mine, a bit of mine, of all of us. thanks god !

Emotionally, for me, the French are European compatriots whose fate affects me just as much as what happens to my compatriots in other German federal states. With the world knowing how long it took to complete the cathedral, even if restoration take even longer than projected, there will be no remonstrance particularly as what is more important , is that the restoration work be fully recognizant of the efforts that new building requirements and standards are met. Even if it means that despite the regressive faction demanding an exact recreation, if new technology is used for the roof sheathing and covering is used, it will nit create pollution from lead, but still have the same appearance. Just this change ,will substantially ease the load on the walls that were strained by both the fire itself and the water infiltration. Additionally, if permanent structural supports are installed above the ribs of the transept ceiling, such will insure that the main columns and the ceiling will endure. Mist do not understand how critical the vaulting ribs and every infill block into the vaulting actually is in the structural integrity of such a ceiling. If each piece is not exactly correct or if there is movement of the central columns, the entire transept vaulting could collapse.
