Love this. Using reclaimed wood ought to be the norm everywhere. SO much kinder on our planet and has so much more character, charm, personality, not to mention, history!

Jon: Your artist's eye is evident in all you produce. I have been doing this for 40 years now and I will NEVER grow tired of seeing reclaimed wood come back to life for an entirely new generation to enjoy. Thanks for sharing. In reading viewer comments, I am reminded of the saying: "There are people who have something to say and there's people who have to say something!" Love you stuff and keep posting.

Amazon (and elsewhere) sells really strong magnets 3" long and a 1/2" wide that would make finding the nails a bit easier.Just lay it flat on your wood and slide it along until it snags on a piece of metal. Love seeing wood w/ character being brought back to life. Thanks Jon

Been working with reclaimed for a long time. Mostly from old barns and other outdoor structures. Most of this wood is covered with surface dust and mildew. I don't have a power washer to clean it up, so I just take it to one of the local do DIY car washes to clean all of this grit and grime off. Dries quickly, and you don't run the risk of breathing in any of that junk on the surface as you work with it which is hard to avoid even with dust control and masking.

A less destructive and easier to repair method of retrieving the nails... drill small holes on both sides of the metal. Works safely and easy to fill if needed. Square forged nails were pre 1811 when wire nails became common. I liked your video.

Hi John... I do not want to say it is bad what you did, but is this way of reusing / reclaiming lumber not a little bit "history" destroying? I am looking forward to see the whole project, maybe my opinion changes then! I had old beams in my house which needed to be replaced & I buyed old lumber (we are talking about 100 to 200 years). I just unnailed it where it was necessary & "brushed" the wood with a plastic brush, so you can see it is hystorical wood. Greetings, Markus.
@ryanmccue8180
@ryanmccue8180 5 лет назад
Well I guess it depends on whether you wanna keep the look or character on the wood but the ways he's doing it he can use the wood in any project. Such as new construction. If you find a bunch of lumber and RIP it into 2x4 congratulations you can now make walls saw horses and blocking. Make them 2x6 and now you have joists and ledgers!

It looks like the rare earth magnets worked quite well. If you're still looking for another way of finding ferris and non-ferris metals; metal detectorists use a device called a pin-pointer. They're fairly inexpensive and can find a nail several inches below the surface.

I agree. Very smart trick to find iron nails. If you reclaim old wood don't discard the metal detector/Propointer completely and just rely on magnets though. Brass screws were used sometimes (especially in windows, window frames, doors and door frames and in lumber used in maritime projects) and the magnets will not detect those. It is never fun when they say hello to your planer and/or jointer knives as you dimension the lumber, or your other sharp tools as you are forming it. Happy woodworking!

Nice woodworking equipment. I use a metal detector. The one at Harbor Freight is only $40 and your saw, planer or jointer blades is more than that, not to mention equipment down time. I also use a 100 year old Crescent nail puller with a sliding hammer, save you a lot of time and save the wood too. CH Hanson 03040 Magnetic Stud Finder has a very strong magnetic. It finds studs (nails) better than any of my electronic stud finders.

Hello Jon I've been watching many of your videos. They're great and very informative. I see you have a Makita planer. I have the joiner/planer combination version I purchased used. I have yet to change the blades. They're so beat up I think I might make molding with it on account of the scratches it leaves on the wood I run through the planer and the joiner. Actually, I moved up to that joiner/planer from a lunch-box type planer I had before. Changing blades on it was quite easy. I have a set of "planer pals" that I used to set the blades on that. How do you change the blades on your Makita planer? Any chance you might make a video about it? Many thanks. Jose

A magnet would have to be absurdly strong to pull a nail out of wood. You’d need an electromagnet that would be super dangerous in a shop setting since it would pull other things in not just nails. Also it would likely pull multiple at once leaving nasty drag holes and possibly splits
