As someone born in DC, visiting most of the sights over the last 60 years, the C&O Canal is probably my #1 favorite in the area. 185 miles of National Park preserving the Maryland side of the Potomac River and this feature is a reminder that while I visit at least a few times a week, I need to see more of it. Well done.

DC is much more than the federal government seated in it. It has a really strong local community within the longtime residents.

I live here in DC very close to this area. The video did not mention that you can take the C&O Canal by bike from Georgetown to Cumberland and then in Cumberland MD, there is another trail that goes to Pittsburgh. So you could bike from Georgetown DC to Pittsburgh by bike in 3-5 days....depending how fast you want to go. Another point: From the Key Bridge to the American Legion bridge there are almost no houses along the Potomac River. And its also the most beautiful stretch of the Potomac River.

Thank you for the great story of the C&O Canal..very well done! And, this awesome canal connects in Cumberland, after 184 miles, with another trail that takes you all the way to Pittsburgh. 330+ miles of off-road hiking, biking etc from DC to Pittsburgh...the Great Allegheny Passage, or GAP Trail. Awesome!

“More people visited, including Yellowstone.” Amazing factoid. My friend used to love visiting the Call Your Mother cafe on 35th and O Street NW in Georgetown. It was a short stroll down to the canal from there. Looking forward to a future CBS Morning Show featuring donuts at the Call Your Mother cafe, then a leisurely stroll down to the C&O Canal.

Motorized engines? No mules? Oh man! That kind of defeats the purpose! The whole point was that tons of cargo and passengers could be moved by being pulled along by a single mule. These boat were the 18th and 19th century equivalent to semi-trucks. Mules also make for a very quiet, contemplative ride. I say ditch the engines and bring back the mules! Families would live on canal boats and children as young as seven years old would ride the mule to direct it to keep going on. Also, tying children for safety wasn't limited to canal boats. Caregivers routinely tied young children to their aprons by "leading strings" to keep the child from wondering off. That was a literal practice. It's where the saying that someone is "still tied to their mother's apron strings," comes from. If you are ever in Georgetown, it is very easy and convenient to walk along the C & O Canal. I drive past it a couple of times a week and so often wish that I could just stop and take some time to stroll along the tow path.

Canals were very important to the development of the USA. This was not one of the major canals. The Erie Canal was far more important. But railroads quickly overtook canals in importance.

US has a lot of canals. They were very important for transportation back in the 1800s prior to the popularization of rail. They’re also popular today for recreation particularly in warmer places like Florida and Cali

A lovely idea that I would love to see...but just not practical. Seems the lovely Potomac River likes to flood, badly when we get one of those huge rain storms, which happen more and more often. And since the canal parallels the river, it gets destroyed, badly. Go back over the past 30 years alone and see the damage it has endured. In fact, it was a flood that finally killed the canal in 1924. Still....I share your dream.
