Restoring A $7,000 Mansion: Rebuilding The Basement Entrance (Pt. 1)

This video is about rebuilding the basement entrance in my 1917 farm house (mansion).
The video begins by giving a brief scope of work for the day and then quickly into getting things tore apart and rebuilt. The first main task of the day is to remove the soil underneath the house's main entrance-way, brace the walls holding the main entrance-way up, and then remove the old concrete foundation. The second main task of the day was to figure out what supplies will be needed for the underground movie theatre addition, and for the remaining work that needs to be done in the basement.
If you really enjoy this video, no need to worry, there is an incredible amount of mansion to be built! There will be many more videos to come!

I love that Cole is still his original, authentic self! I hope he doesn't read the comments because I don't want any of you buzzards making him feel like he has to change everything about himself and the way he does HIS videos just to make a voice few happy. If y'all don't like how he talks, what his volume is, or how many times he says "underground movie theater", you can turn the volume off. Cole got this notoriety and the amount of followers he has because of how he does things. No need to fix what isn't broken.

Might call and double check that you as the homeowner can do it yourself. In my county in kansas, a contractor has to be approved and certified to do the work. BUT, as the homeowners... I was able to do my entire septic system myself. I just had to have the environmental guy test my soil, discuss the plans and measurements with him, and then he came out to do 3 inspection at predetermined points in the project prior to me back filling. Cost me $4,000, he said that the local companies would have charged me $14,000 - 20,000! Made all the hard work WELL worth it!!!!!

Before you install that last footer and patch of wall below the stairs you should dig a hole/trench from the outside underneath the foundation and use that to slide the 40 foot I-beam into place. Seems to me like it'd be the easiest way.

☝️Or slide it in through the place it's going to rest from under the front porch. 40 foot I-Beam is massively heavy. Trying to jockey that around, if you even can, has a high probability of someone getting hurt. Put a hole in the top plate area to the outside and slide it in. On motion and your done.

I agree if want the 40 foot beam in one piece it's gonna need be be slid in under the foundation. Can't see any way a 40 foot beam fits in through a 10 foot hole in the middle of the foundation. Or think you'll have to cut it in 2 sections and weld it together inside the basement

After getting quotes in the $10k range to replace the drain field in my 4br 3ba home, I decided to do mine myself too. The 3 most difficult things I remember from doing this was 1. Finding a wholesale company who would sell me the drainfield vaults. (I finally found a well and septic wholesale supplier in my area who agreed to sell them to me). 2. Leveling the bottom of the drainfield after excavating. (I later watched a septic company in my area replace my neighbors drainfield using the same vaults I used and they leveled 2 aluminum rails on either side of the rectangular drain field hole and then used these as a screed to level the bottom with compacted sand - MUCH FASTER to do it this way. 3. I didn't own a transit and when I laid this out I believed from eyeballing this - doing a gravity feed from the existing septic tank (it was pretty deep) to the new drain field location might not be possible. As a result, I purchased a plastic 500-gallon pump tank that I put between the septic tank and drain field to pump the effluent into the drain field vaults. A buddy came over AFTER I had purchased and installed the pump tank with his transit and I learned (too late) that although it was very close, I actually could have done a gravity feed to my drain field eliminating the electric pump and tank and saved some more money. Total cost including the pump tank, pump, electrical hook up, vaults, and 4" septic pipe - about $3k. I reused the existing concrete septic tank as it was in good condition. Go for it and save the money - you are more than capable and the building code in your area will tell you what the requirements are. The county came out and did a perk test for me to pull the permit and then they told me how deep the top of the vaults needed to be. It was pretty easy overall to do. P.S. We have VERY strict building codes here and I was able to do this without being licensed. (Licensure here requires an apprenticeship). Most jurisdictions will allow the homeowner to pull their own permits without being certified and will simply inspect the work to be sure you do it properly. I bet you only need to be licensed if you were doing it commercially. Check with your permitting office - typically there are exemptions for homeowners installing themselves. Cole - you are NOT a contractor - you are a homeowner doing the work yourself - big difference.
@probablynot1368
@probablynot1368 8 дней назад
Amazing! How much time did it take for you to design and complete the installation?
@flippedout
@flippedout 8 дней назад
@@probablynot1368 It only took about 1 week to read the building code about septic drain fields and total install time was about 1 week after I got the results of the perk test back from the county. Not long. When the inspector came to inspect my new drain field before backfilling it - he said he had cancelled all of his appointments for that day and was pretty surprised that he passed it first try - he figured since I was a homeowner it would be a crap show. Anyway, everything is written in the code and luckily they guy I hired to dig the hole had done septic systems before and confirmed that what I was doing was correct. :)

Cole, double check your septic tank certification requirements. It may be different from Washington state, but here if you can do a simple gravity system you can still do your own install, just need to get someone to design it for you. Doing it myself cut the cost from $25k to $12k plus permit. A pumped drain field had to be done by a "professional".

I had an idea that would be really neat. The outside wall of the basement, inside wall of the theater, can be sealed to preserve the stones in the concrete. When the sealant is applied, the pieces of granite, crystals, and other pretty stones would make a beautiful wall...just a neat way to remember your great grandfather. 😊❤

I’d be interested in seeing a drawing of what the garage extension with underground movie theatre is going to look like. I’m having a hard time visualizing it. Especially how it ties into the existing house. My apologies if I’ve missed it somehow.

Enjoying the remodel, excellent content. Wondering what the square footage will be after the remodel, I guess currently it is five thousand square feet.
