I just restored a beautiful Plumb from 1944 with a 50 year old handle. Like you I didn’t over restore. I like to leave some character of the former use. Thanks Kyle!

Very good info!! I've been swinging hammers all my life... and this tutorial shows some very basic things that have been all but lost . Kyle says it is for beginners but this is very helpful even for the experienced! Thanks for the tips and keeping us artisans up on the basics... and the details that make our work a artfome...

I gave my son his first axe some years ago when he purchased some land in a bush area in Victoria Australia. He still has it and uses it and recently I too used it when cutting some kindling wood when we spent a weekend with him and his family at the bush block. Love your channel and skills Kyle.

Oh man, now this is my territory. Through the last 20 years I got into axe collecting and love it. There is something so primitive yet rewarding about saving them. And you are so spot on about grain orientation. I had broke a few years ago before my dad pointed out how important it was. Great video Kyle!!!! Very enjoyable 👍🙏

Kyle, this axe is something else. I´m so glad you kept the vintage look on the axe head. The handle looks so fresch and crisp. The sheath is topnotch. Thank you also for the educational aspect.

Great restoration of a beautiful tool. So much is thrown away that can be repurposed and made better than most of what we buy today. Thanks for the great vid and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable

Good rundown Kyle. The grain orientation is such a simple yet essential aspect of any wooden tool selection. All the best to you and your family.

Thank you! It sure is, and it's easy to get right if you know what to look for! thanks for watching!

More important than orientation is just growth ring runnout in general. With curved handles grain orientation will matter more. But even a slightly curved handle can be fine with 90 degree orientation. I love wood. I rive the stuff by hand, air dry the lumber and make my own handles. With hatchets you can really experiment. Those handles don't take the same beating a full sized axe handle do. This is why you find a lot more vintage handles with a usable handle compared to a full sized axe.

I appreciate you keeping these arts alive. I used to go out to the shed or garage as a kid and do little projects like this. My grandpa always had cool old relics of the past laying around, and I was always fascinated by them. I restored a few knives and such as a teen, and I miss being able to do this. It's a lost art in an age where everyone throws things away to buy new. When I have space again, I'd love to jump back into it.

Love a good axe for sure. I have a couple of GF and enjoy taking them to the farm. So much ash dying down here and the axe help keep the trails clear for ATV. Nice to give the handle light sand then apply the boiled linseed which I use too. One of the axe’s has a red oak handle and boy that’s a piece that always catches my eye. Good stuff and nice job on that one you just did. Take care

He's not kidding about the oil soaked rags. Buddy threw a bunch in a cardboard box, that he was using for a garbage can. Burst into flames and burned the Hottub skirting and lid. 🤭

Great video, Kyle! I've just recently made a sheath for my Gransfors small forest axe (my buddy went to split wood without taking the factory sheath off first) and I was wondering what you used to finish the leather. It had a great look to it and I'm assuming it'll help keep the sheath in good condition. Thanks!

This is the first time I've watched one of your videos and enjoyed it very much. But what caught my eye was the name of your site. I was born in Corner Brook, but we moved to Tennessee when my father was transferred to here to help start the Bowater Mill in Calhoun, TN. I was only 5 months old when we moved, so I have no history of there. I was wondering if you have any family there?

In fact, I know and have visited the island where the original Welland Vale Axe company began. I live around the corner. There is still a commemorative sign signifying their great products and the people who worked hard at producing excellence. Stuck in the middle of the old Welland Canal sits the Welland Vale Company. If you look close you can still see the foundry foundations.

The Golden Horseshoe is full of old shacks and barns with fully operation old time workshops. Generally with an old gentleman with only nine a half fingers. On a good day, the missus would join the conversation with egg sald sandwiches and tales of excellence. That's what's wrong in the 21st century, not enough value given to the pursuit of excellence. Come for a visit sometime, I'll show you folks that have forgotten more than most people learn in their lives. Kinda like the wharf in outport Newfoundland. Some old guy with nine and half fingers fixing a 60 year old dinghy so that it's good to produce for another 30 years. Ya gotta value excellence and those who strive to deliver it. That's what I say, yes I do, better believe it.

Well how coincidental is this, Kyle? I have been hanging some handles on and refurbishing a few vintage axe heads lately, so this video has been very timely. I love the patina on the vintage heads and typically choose to leave as much of that in tact as you did with this project. Great hang on the handle too. Thanks for sharing this project with us, Kyle. I guess now I need to learn some basic leather work, eh?

Have you found a head with a malformed eye, and is that something that can be fixed? Also, in re tool quality, I found a Ukrainian smith on Etsy, bought a very satisfactory adze from him. I hope he's still alive and in business.
