Welcome to this new series where I restore a wooden 1986 (despite saying 1987 in the video, oops!) Merlin Rocket sailing dinghy. She was built by Robert Spocton of Boatcraft, and has been successfully raced and sailed in the past, but now due to an extended period in a dinghy park, and then upside down pending renovation by the previous owner, needs a complete re-paint, epoxy, and varnish. Her spars and foils also need some work, as does the handmade trolley.
In this episode I take you around the boat, pointing out the areas that need the most work, and turn her upside down ready for stripping the paint from the hull in the next episode.
Fortunately for me, the previous owner began restoring her back in April 2020, so her entire inside has already been stripped ready for sanding and varnishing. Right now, though, my focus is on her hull, as after being kept upside down for almost a year, some water was getting in where the planks overlap.
