Welcome to this new series where I restore a wooden 1986 (despite saying 1987 in the video, oops!) Merlin Rocket sailing dinghy. She was built by Robert Spocton of Boatcraft, and has been successfully raced and sailed in the past, but now due to an extended period in a dinghy park, and then upside down pending renovation by the previous owner, needs a complete re-paint, epoxy, and varnish. Her spars and foils also need some work, as does the handmade trolley.
In this episode I take you around the boat, pointing out the areas that need the most work, and turn her upside down ready for stripping the paint from the hull in the next episode.
Fortunately for me, the previous owner began restoring her back in April 2020, so her entire inside has already been stripped ready for sanding and varnishing. Right now, though, my focus is on her hull, as after being kept upside down for almost a year, some water was getting in where the planks overlap. I hope so, though that rather depends on who's at the helm!

She looks fast, beautiful boat. Look forward to your restoration. Enjoyed the Mirror restore. Cheers from Ontario Canada.

Thank you, Merlins are gorgeous boats. I'm currently working on sanding back the hull, which is making me realise just how much more hull there is than on the mirror!

Trailing edge of those bottom planks look good. The boat was well treated in.the past. Good luck with it. All.about time and opportumity.

The more I'm taking off the hull, the more I'm realising how lucky I've been with no rot anywhere! It's turning out to be more of a refurb than a restoration... Anyway, all good fun and I'm excited to sail her as soon as possible.
