That was a wonderful episode - thank you so much. I've been to Iona several times - when I lived in Oban for a couple of years it was almost on my doorstep - but every time it made a big impression. Mostly on day trips, though the last time I was there I was helping a friend fulfil a lifelong dream, just a couple of months before she died. We stayed a few days and got to explore the whole island, especially the beaches. It's quite different after the last tourists have departed on the last ferry - easily 2000 a day in the summer season. There's a corner in the abbey where you can leave a prayer. My friend prayed not for a medical miracle, but for her family and friends who she knew would grieve when the time came for her to make her last journey. St Columba was lucky in having a skilled biographer, Adomnan, to write up his life and works. There were several other missionary monks around at the same time who were equally energetic , saintly and innovative, but all we have of them is a few church dedications, some place-names, and some local stories. They don't get 2000 pilgrims a day, but they still deserve to be remembered. The drone footage at the end was a timely reminder that sometimes just one other person is more than enough, and that solitude can be healing and sacred too, especially in such a stunning environment. This episode will surely go down as one of the best ever, so thank you again for that, and I hope the trip to Iona helped you too. And you two... Your Wednesday night plans sound exciting and I hope you get a good response. A question from me - what happens when you hit 50k?

I read a book Holy Blood, Holy Grail. Author made claim that Hebrews who fled Babylonian occupation ended up in Ireland. The similarities between Hebrew religion and ancient Irish faith makes this very likely.
@TheScottishIsle
@TheScottishIsle 8 часов назад
They dispersed all over Europe. The ones who fled north lived for a time around the Caucasus mountains- their king was called Omri, and in their own tongue the native Assyrians of that area called them the Bit Kymri (transliteration of Omri). In their further migrations, they kept this name...look at the Welsh spelling of the country of Wales! And there are many hundreds of words in Hebrew, Gaelic and Welsh which are the same. Amazing history.
@arthurhartsock1407
@arthurhartsock1407 39 минут назад
@@TheScottishIsle If we want to get really crazy, then assume Jesus had a family and children who survived his death. Supposedly ended up in southern France. Also claimed by Holy Blood/Grail.

One of my 4th great grandfathers, Patrick McDougal was from Kildalton and Oa, Argyll, Scotland. His father and grandfather Sorlie B1682 also born there, grandmother's maiden name Fledger. Same for his maternal line surname Olymnie, and Ncvretneh. Most of the rest are from Belfast or England, surnames are Carson, Bond, and of course McDaniel. Patrick arrived in 1767 in S. Carolina and married there. I guess the government encouraged immigration according to the book "In My Father's House are Many Mansions".

I went to Iona in the 1990s. I flew from Tokyo to Glasgow, took the train, the bus, the ferry and stayed one or two nights there. The journey took about 24 hours or more! I really enjoyed it and later crazily applied for a job with the Iona Community which didn’t work out. I was really into the Iona Community at the time so my perception was different. We got stuck on Mull though as we missed the ferry by 5 minutes. While we were staying in Iona the ferry schedule had changed from the hourly(?) summer schedule to a twice daily ferry and we had to wait from around 9AM until 5PM to get the next ferry. That was a long day with only a pub and a corner shop to amuse us.

Interesting episode! Thoroughly enjoyable. If you'll excuse one nit-pick, though... 🙄 The Iona Community (an ecumenical Christian organisation) should perhaps not be confused with the community of Iona (ie the people of the island). The early restoration work was conducted by the Cathedral Trust and was restricted to the restoration of the Abbey itself in the period around 1910. The Iona Community was externally funded and carried out the restoration of the rest of the site, largely with external funding and by training volunteer workers, most of whom came from places other than Iona itself. So, it's really a bit of a leap to hold Iona out as an example of local community-led activism!

Archeologist recently found what they believe to be St Columba's "Cell" Chaluim Chille, Early monks used the desert fathers of Egypt, hermit types, as a role model and built small bee hive structures in remote places like Iona (Hii). and Lindisfarne. Numerous place names in Scotland are called "Deserts" or Dysart where the monks once lived, albeit really just remote places due to the distinct lack of actual deserts in Britain. :) so it would have looked originally like Skellig Michael, see Luke Skywalker from last Star wars film, Later monastic orders built Cloisters, square courtyards with "Cells" around for the monks in deference to these origins, Later prisons copied this design, which is why you get banged up in "Cells" today. Scott, what did you expect to see on Iona? great herds of wilder beasts roaming across the Serengeti ? lol

Oh my gosh .... I never ever in my wildest abilities though admittedly limited, would have connected Judea with Scotland ... MIND BLOWN!!!!!!!! I mean, it shows my pea brain in that the Christian faith of course came from the Far East but Katie's narrative just really rdove home the point that these 2 VERY different & distanced peoples bridged a gap at some point.

First went to Iona with Rhona my youngest sister in 2005. We arrived about 9 pm or later and walked in the summer evening light up to the Hostel at the far end of the island. Rhona dragged her wheelie bag all the way. I had a back pack. Lived our time there. In 2007 with husband Mike on his NZ Primary School Principals sabbatical we visited the school where there was a young Maori boy enrolled and staying with a Scottish relative. Amazing. After coming out of the Abbey on Sunday we spoke to Rhona in NZ and she shared that her cancer had returned. Powerful times on Iona. ❤
