This is a record of 6 months of work restoring W451.
If anyone else is considering doing similar, be warned.
It is far cheaper to buy a restored boat than to do it yourself.
Whilst the process was rather fun, in a strange kind of way, this video will not be for everyone....

Lovely job! These wooden classics are timeless and the Wayfarer so capable. I have W265, the boat Peter Clutterbuck sailed from Hamble to Norway! Worth looking up his book if you're planning to go beyond the Broads.

Sitting in a museum or traveling from show to show is a boring life for a boat... just one step up from being neglected, rotting away behind a shed... Functional⛵️Restoration gets the boat back doing what she’s meant to do... carrying those who love and care for her into adventure after adventure, getting wet, drying out and getting wet again, while all the experience of wind, weather and sail create new memories for family and friends... Great to see. I’m restoring a 1968 Leader and your observations on ‘fun in a strange kind of way’ and cheaper to get a restored one than do it yourself really resonate! 😂 lovely to have these vintage boats back out on the water though

I'll never forget working on my Mistral (fiberglass knockoff) 's rudder! I managed to suck my thumb into the roller on my belt sander! A few hours later I was heating up a needle to drill a hole in the nail to relieve the (excrutiating) pressure.

Awhh. That sounds miserable. I can sympathise. On my last boat project I managed to router out my finger. I tried to keep going and nearly fainted which was even more dumb. The finger still feels weird several years later.

You have inspired me a bit. I am part way (too many years it seems) thru restoring a 1960's Tamar Class sailing dinghy of a very similar design. There were hundreds built in Tasmania Aus back in the day as they were cheap and simple to build. Alas many people found them to be a very good power boat , so many ended up at the beach shack to rot. Tasmania is an island with many great sailing areas. At the head of the Tamar river is the city of Launceston where my boat was built. Great sailing estuary in the right conditions. I will be 60 late this year, so better get my finger out and finish.

It's never too late to get a boat finished off. I spent a bit of time when I was younger across the Bass Strait in Melbourne. A lovely corner of the world you have there.

Great video and an inspiration for my own project due to start next month. Mine will require rebuilding the back 2 foot as it is rotten (although my inspection took place on the wettest August day for years. I may only have to patch in places). I do like a challenge.

Next time you get a water soaked boat try Cirrus Systems stripper, it is water based and just washes off with a hose taking paint and varnish with it, saves hours of work. I have no connection with the company other than having used it's products, The least impressive thing about the product is the realization of the time and money wasted stripping coatings in the past, quite sickening really. Nice job by the way great to see the old girl saved to race another day.
