It is actually quite common to find master systems with the protective film on, I never removed it on my childhood one either, think it was just a think people didn't do/forgot to do, + it was quite hard to remove even when it was new.

The SMS was my first home console. My father bought it and a bunch of games at a garage sale for $20 in the late 80's. For years I'd thought my parents sold it, but I recently stumbled upon it in my mom's attic and I've been meaning to re-cap it. So this video was well timed for me! If it doesn't turn on, I'll be sure to check out those three possible problem areas.

From what I'm told, the most dangerous thing for a Master System is trying to power it with an NES Power Adapter. Not sure if there's a fuse internally that pops or if it's damaging the voltage regulator like in this video, but that'll do it. Funny enough, powering the NES with an SMS or a Genesis power adapter is actually preferred over the NES one. Throw those NES ones away!

Whenever I refurb a console I always replace the 7805 with a modern upgrade, such as a LM7805C or 7805V, which are more linear switching buck convertors. You can also improve long term reliability and reduced heat by going with a 2A model.

For that plastic polishing you really should bust out a dremel with a little buffing wheel. It makes it so much faster and then it actually works. Hand polishing should be saved for last when there's literally almost no scratches left other than the most fine ones that can only be seen under light. Maybe even an electric palm buffer. The surface is pretty big.

Nice to see a Master System come back from what might have ended up in a dump somewhere. Nice work. I was one, who had a NES with a Master System sitting right next to it when they were current, I enjoyed the Master System as much as I did the NES. And Phantasy Star is easy one of the best 8-bit games ever made. Also, one of my top 5 favorite games of all time. I even have the "Sega Help sheet" for it, when you could call Sega when you had a problem in a game, and they would mail you a walkthrough. I do re-play it ever 3-4 years. There is a retranslation to the game but, you need a rom cart to play the patched rom, it is impressive to see the text changes in the game. If you want to change it up a little, they did release a sort of remaster of it, in Japan only for the PS2 (Sega Ages). There is an English translation that was done pretty well. It's impressive to see the change and a worthy play if you're a fan. I love seeing retro consoles given a new life. They can last 100's of years if taken care of.

It depends on the situation. I like to remove them for a more thorough cleaning. A really useful mod you can do is the PAUSE button mod. Once done you can re-wire a Mega Drive controller or add a small microswitch to the original controller. Once done you can press Pause from the controller.
