The rubbing the putty with the thinner is a slick trick Keith! I will be storing that away in my gray cells for future reference! Thanks for the great tip. The Bing engine is coming along nicely....

I wonder how many little boys, (and maybe a few little sisters) enjoyed playing with this wonderful dream toy. It is certainly appropriate to set up on a ring of tracks that will go around the base of a Christmas tree on Christmas morning. Merry Christmas to you and your family Keith. I have truly enjoyed what you have shared with the world, because it is a love of labor for you.

Having recently done some fussy painting myself, I appreciate your skill.

Keith, when you reinforce the replacement key, make sure the key will still fit through the whole in the body.

Try a drum tuning key hopeful it should be right size

Another great Video. Have you tried using a drum key or a harpsichord tuning wrench for winding?

I looked everywhere in the studio for a Drum key buy alas there were none to be found....... alas I don't do much with harpsichords these days, not since about 1397 when they were invented }:-)))

what sort of paint was originally on it, nitro cellulose? i have always kind of like the way old things have cracked paint.
@keithappleton

Not sure, the black paint done by someone who owned the engine in the past is black enamel, The reddish/brown cracked paint is probably an enamel also, I really don't know.

A purist restoration would reclaim the old paint, liquify it, and reapply it. I can’t believe you are putting NEW paint on this old engine! I am gong to call the antiquities commission. While I’m at it, JB weld did not exist when this was built. How dare you put modern materials on this train. However, it is acceptable to use your Bahco spanner on it since Bahco over 130 years old. Merry Christmas

Pity your client wanted this exceptional antique toy repaired, instead of just cleaned. The repairs carried out have reduced its value to about a quarter of the original “ as found” condition.

It is My engine - it does not belong to a client and I don't care about the so called "reducing its value" etc . . . . . I am not a collector and I don't want to sell it anyway . . . . I could not live with looking at it in the state it was in when I got it - without its chimney and the entire front smashed in (I didn't show that in the video) and without buffers, all the rods were also badly bent. If I remove the chimney and the buffers, then smash the front and the cab with a hammer, it can easily be put back into its "original condition" }:-)))
