Don’t forget the anti static and tack rags. I didn’t realize how much a pain static was till I was proficient. Then you find fighting static electricity is always the challenge. It’s like they build a body shop in an electro magnetic field. We’re you think your fighting contaminated paint, /water spots, fish eyes, but it’s static electricity.
My dad did painting for years. You can do it either way. For what your doing it would be better to do it with the parts off vs on. Then you can do the inside of the doors and fenders leaving no silver. If you were doing a pattern or a color shift of any type then you are better to do it assembled. Hope that helps 😁
Great work mate, starting to look show quality already. In regards to the doors and fenders, if I was going to do this myself, I would send the doors and fenders away for sand blasting. Then I would fix any dings/dents or hidden cancer (that's been covered up) prime inside and out, base coat and clear the inside and then bolt them on the car and paint the whole car complete.
SOOOOO much work man. Doing the same thing with my car right now, feels like I'll never be done cleaning, scuffing, masking, cleaning, cleaning, cleaning... ugh it never ends! Love the way the interior turned out looks freaking awesome!
A smart man will admit they don’t know and learn. Being able to admit it takes a real man as it’s the hardest thing to do. This will be a fun drift car for sure. Turbo rotor. Makes sure when your painting white or silver or grey. Hold a lifht in your opposit hand you paint with and look for the flash. Otherwise you will be snowblind. White is hard to see when painting, and when you lay clear down the light is crucial. This is the part where I go suggest you watch sylvestor’s customs and watch his body work and, paint prep and paint videos. IV been a body guy for 15 years, and I’m 35, watched his videos and just the body panel alignment and level portion was amazing the way he takes new school and combines it with old school for amazing results. You will learn a ton from him. I did for sure. And your right in the meat of when those videos apply. .. with that said. Looks like you were doing pretty well laying the paint down, the speed and proficiency will come with time and as your confidence grows.
I'd love to hear the paint guys advise on how close to professional you were able to make your paint job and any tips and tricks to help you refine the process so that we can have full context of the dream as DIYers ❤️
@@Smeedia Think RX-7 but american style lol. That's the best way I can describe it. The Corvette is a real sports car. The only other thing I can compare it to is a Viper in terms of true American sports cars. Plus the LS/LT engines are just so easy to maintain/work on.
I love watching him do stuff and how honest you are with us as your audience and makes me feel more encouraged to do things mess up and keep trying cuz you do things you've never done you're not comfortable doing and you just put forth the effort even though it's money involved and people don't like to waste money cuz you know not everybody has it like that but to give it a try you never know you might be good at it you can get better at it I just like that inspiration I get from your channel
We are all going to make mistakes as we learn. And up front it may cost a bit more, but in the long run whenever you have projects to do you’ll have the equipment and skills to do it again. 🥳 I was terrified ti start painting because I thought I’d just mess it up. But we all surprise ourselves with what we can do. 🥳 biggest thing I say is just get out and give it a try 🙌
I knew you wouldn’t be able to resist painting the rest yourself. After all the prep work and time you’ve already put into the underbody it was only a matter of time. Hell yeah.
Tanner it's looking freaking awesome. Keep up the great work. I love how this project is the farthest thing from a subaru yet you were able to still incorporate a subaru with the color lol
This is something I've really been wanting to see. Thank you for dabbling in so many fields of expertise and sharing it with all of us. It makes it less daunting for some of us to dig into our own projects.❤❤❤
Spraying the parts off the car you will find a lot easier for you to do. Just make sure that you spray them at the same angle as if you were spraying the car. This is more critical if the car was metallic but not essential being that it is a base colour. , if you spray the parts and the body of the car at the same time this will guarantee that the colour will be the same as opposed to spraying them separate and mixing paint separate for these parts and the body a slight difference of temperature all the mixing of paint could change the colour , another tip for you when painting wrap the air hose to the gun round your waist, hold with your left hand so the air house goes underneath your right arm round your back to your left hand your find this will become more natural as your painting and keeps the airline completely out of the way you find this lot easier way to paint
I’ll try to do that with the hose, I’ve been tossing it over my shoulder but I tend to get tangled in it lol Will do, I’ll try and spray everything same day if possible or even around days that have similar temps and humidity 🫡
A build like this is what creates an eternal bond, reminds me of when I built my RSX-S from the ground up. Cant picture my life without that car at this point.
As a word of advice if you want to paint all the parts evenly and make it SEMA MAZDA Hall Of Fame edition, all parts depending on the place will pull them off regardless and I would suggest doing the same leaving them a part and just painting them separately. As a moderate enthusiast of personal dream builds, do not ever "skimp" even on the little things because later on you don't want to regret what you should have done. You have worked hard for all of this now, why let the best go to waste and make it a dream masterpiece of smeedia Hall Of Fame glory.
Yo dog, I live in a small city in Canada and saw an STI drive by with a smedia windshield banner. I thought that was pretty cool. Car looks sick and I think its mega cool you are just doing it on your own.
Well done Tanner! Looking forward to seeing this build progress. Not much out there is nicer than a fully dressed and built proper RX7. (get fkn nutz with the heat sheilding especially with a white car, I recommend search ---"Self Adhesive Aluminum Foil Sound Insulation Cotton,Reflective Insulation Roll Self-Adhesive Aluminum Foil Roof Insulation, for Floors,Walls,Lofts,Roofs ( Color : 15mm(thk) , Size : 1*1M(1m²) ) and then coat in a gold reflective sheet on the firewall near downpipe, etc.)
I'm glad, and excited for you that you've decided to paint the exterior body of the RX-7. From the Instagram photos I've seen earlier of the interior, you'll kill it!! 😜 Now to put it all back together
@@Smeedia haha I absolutely believe that. Thank you for the recent tip about evaporust gel. My dad had recommended evaporust, but you let me know they made a gel. Stuff has been coming in handy as I work my way through this old Scion Ive had sitting. I always love your WRX stuff, but this rx7 series got me to pull this old Scion inside the garage and have a try at fixing it up. Thank you so much bud.
I'm glad you at least scoffed it up Because it definitely would of not Stuck with the primer And I guess you used etch Primer Because of all the raw metal Is I used to work on high end classic So much We had to paint and Clear Is underneath the car Because they're a high end Show cars and I don't know I don't know if the car is a solid color Ifor a metallica color If it's metallic Make sure Either way your first or second coat Should be very light Especially metallic Good luck
I would paint the back sides of the doors and hard to reach areas of any doors and fenders while off the car then put those parts on the car to paint the exterior or those parts while it’s on the car. Probably the easiest way to paint it and you get even more practice before doing the outside of the car…
Looking good buddy!! Well you don’t have to blend the panels together, off the car would be better. You can get the edges, brackets etc. looking better as well.
itll be easier to paint the fenders hood and bumper off of the car, just make sure they are in the same orientation that they would be mounted on the car (lay the hood flat, fenders upright, bumper facing out not up)
Will do 🫡 I bought a couple stands to hold all the panels while we paint them. Figured doing it panel by panel would be a bit easier for me to focus on. Vs doing the whole car at once 😅
hey bro have a quick question i have a 07 sti with 19lbs of boost and im not sure if its turbo failure or boost leak but i have P0244 and in 4th gear around 4.500RPMS cuts boost cuts fuel bogs really bad and if i keep going i can feel the turbo working and not working. its got a Cobb 20G with stock wastegate but i watched your video on how make X amount of HP in a STI and on the list for 350whp waste-gate wasn’t on there, jus wondering what you would suggest doing or thinking or have ever heard of this thanks again!
It would be sick if you had a media badge made and put it on the front or rear or even little front fender ones….. 👀 I mean you are doing everything at this point it would be a nice custom touch
I knew you'd eventually decide to spray the car yourself. Why do I get the feeling Blue isn't going to stay blue after you get this one back together? 😁
How hard was it to pull the windsheild and did it come out in one piece? Ive got a carbon roof for my fd to replace the sunroof and thats my biggest worry
I've never done anything like this before but maybe spraying nitrous directly onto that old sound Sound deadening might have gotten it cold enough to knock off
If you plan on bringing that car to SEMA, you should probably have someone with experience paint the exterior. Just sayin. The interior and engine bay did come out pretty dope though, but I wouldn't risk the biscuit.
@@Smeedia So you've accepted the SEMA quality standards then? I kid, but seriously. Keep a backup plan in place if your paintjob doesn't turn out so hot. It's always good to challenge yourself, but if you have a specific goal in mind well it might just do you better to outsource something you don't have the time to tackle properly.
You better sound deaden the shit out of that thing! Make it quiet, do all the metal surfaces and even the backsides of the interior trim panels, it made a huuuge difference on my car, lets you appreciate the exhaust and the speakers more too :)
Incase you need a brand, I actually highly recommend the Amazon basics stuff, a while back I came across an independent website that did testing on 20+ products and the Amazon brand surprisingly came out pretty close to the top, for the money and easy application, I would go with that, just make sure you get a roller :) I think that and the raptor line you put on plus the seam selling will reduce a ton of unnecessary NVH
It depends on how much he values sound quality... apparently not that much since he runs Chineseium headunits in several cars. I'm a big car audio guy, sold that shit for the better part of a decade. I will always err on the side of the audiophile in a debate like this.
@@cd5sircoupe honestly though even if you don't care about sound quality, I would say doing what he suggested is a good Idea because the sound deading just makes for a more comfortable and enjoyable driving experience. It makes the interior a little quieter on the interior but you can still enjoy the intake and exhaust sounds without the tinny annoying rattle of stones bouncing off the subframe and chassis. Plus the amount of weight it will add is pretty well negligible unless it's meant to be a Pure race car
Naw you can paint everything off the car. Especially since you're making the car all the same color. Color matching won't be a worry. Whatever is easier for you though, if you wanna do it on the car and that makes more space do that!
@@Smeedia Dynamat 😆. That shit was stupid expensive to the regular consumer. It was like less than 10% of the cost to me as a dealer. So if a roll was $30 I'd pay like $3. Never would have done it as a normie.
@Smeedia it was a joke originally, but when you were laying down the seam sealer you gapped a spot on the floorboard. Plus the paint where the windshield is that you brought up. Honestly though I commented that right when the video started just to troll you 🤣🤣🤣
