A full restoration of a couple of the rarest antiques in paintball- Puma pumps! Only made from 1986 to 1987, and only in relatively small numbers, few players have even seen one, let alone used one.

Nice to see the Ductor helping out with another restoration... As is proper for a RU-vid restoration video featuring parts getting a bath in soapy H2O :)

I was going to pop in an suggest a rubber duckie in the sink while you were washing the barrel assembly… then you zoomed out and it was in the soap dish! Touché! Nice work Doc, that thing shot with more authority than I was expecting!

Back when I was into paintball, about 2 decades ago, I collected antique markers and often used them as backup or to make games more interesting. Sold most of them later on…

A very nice restoration, the looked real good once ya finished. Boy were they crusty in that disassembled shot.

Outstanding video Sir, thank you very much for sharing. As a long time lover of Paintball and an affinity for it's History, coupled with an almost equal admiration for Machining and Restoration, this video checks off so many boxes. Although I've never owned one or even held one, the Avratech R7 is my pick for best PB Pistol. Those aside, these Pumas are darned cool in their own right though. If only they had a means for a control bore insert and likely a .45 grip compatible frame, these would be that much better-er.

Its kinda zen. I find myself thinking.. is that him wearing a respirator because it smells, what's he thinking while silently scrubbing away at this enigmatic piece of paintball history? The attention to detail and passion for preserving this piece of the past is inspiring.

Saw the plastic bottle bobbing in the soapy water and started wishing you had a yellow rubber duck in there instead...

According to fast googling, these must be priceless collectables now. "Puma" from Indian Creek Designs looks more googleable 🙂

Honestly, I'm a little disappointed that you didn't use a laser or some sort of nanites on this. Then again maybe I've just been reading the whiteboard too long. 🤣

Do we have any clue what happened to this marker? just old and neglected or something more spectacular? Love the vid btw

No, surprisingly little is known about them. We're trying to gather details, if anyone knows. Best guess at the moment is that the maker sunk a bunch of money into them (extrusions, castings, stampings, injection-molded grips, etc) but sales were lower than expected which led to them going out of business. Again, mostly guesswork, I'll have a follow-up if we learn more.

@@DocsMachineShop If it helps, those grips look like they used existing grips and modified the frame to suit. In that period of time, LOTS of guns used plastic screw on grips like that, and they might have bought from an existing supplier. They could even have used a starter frame from a Browning.
@DocsMachineShop
@DocsMachineShop Год назад
@@tbelding Not impossible, but unlikely. The first grips you see are injection molded, and as shown in the shot from the backside, the molds used to say "PUMA", but the lettering was welded up. The second set, from the box, are cast in resin of some sort, and of course also say PUMA. If the frame is from something else, I'd be very curious to know, but I doubt it.

That is very cool. Did someone try to paint that poor thing white? Excellent work.
@brianspencer6397
@brianspencer6397 Год назад
No, they used fabric backed duct tape to hold it together, and the white was the dried-out tape adhesive residue.

I saw on your website the you made a prototype lever action paintball gun called "The Duke" back in 2016, did anything come of it? I would love to see a video update on it.

The Duke is still near the top of my list. Trying to get a little more experience with the CNCs first.

I was doing paintball back at that point, and I don't recall anything quite like that, no. I have a couple of comments, nothing nasty. 1) Where's the barrel plug? You forgot to put that in when you finished shooting :) 2) I would call this a full refurbishment, rather than a restoration. I know it's more semantics than anything else, but what you did was clean it up, replace all parts that were missing or damaged, and put it back into a full serviceable/usable condition. That's perfect, because it's a tool to be used, not a tool to look pretty. It's just in a restoration, you generally work to put it in "like new" condition, which in this case would have involved polishing the aluminum corrosion, filling/smoothing the pits, and so forth - which isn't necessary. (and using exact material replacement parts where possible. I doubt that washer material is still around after 35 years, for example) Subscribed and voted up.
@DocsMachineShop
@DocsMachineShop Год назад
1: Barrel plugs weren't a thing in 1986. :) (Realistically, it was hard enough juggling the gun, tubes, 12-gram and camera all by myself. :) And 2, restore, refurbish, refinish, rebuild, whatever you want to call it. :)
@bthatguy1181

What kind of tap would you use to run that internal acme thread? Or is it a fast run bore kinda thing?
@DocsMachineShop
@DocsMachineShop Год назад
The rear plug thread was milled via circular interpolation, or possibly thread-milled on a lathe (using a powered cutting head.) It's more square thread than ACME, but properly neither. If I was trying to duplicate it in a one-off situation, I'd probably do multiple passes single-point.
