Restoring an Old Rusty Straight Razor

Yes... The pin is peened so it's mushroomed. All you have to do is file or sand/grind the pin flat with the washer and it falls out then you can repeen later after restoring the blade.

Razor emporium does full restoration services for antique straight razors and they do amazing work. Ive never heard them do one but the ones they redo are beautiful. They do custom scales and stuff too.

I wish i had never even tried cartridges in my life. Cut throat is the only way to shave, i never get razor burn anymore either. Good tallow soap and a razor that'll cut if you look at it wrong and you're set for a change fit for a king. I guess those old cowboys that kept using staights long after everyone had switched to disposable garbage. Lot more to it than meet's the eye.

It is not sharp enough to shave your face comfortably. It will feel as if you're pulling the whiskers out with tweezers. The razor still needs quite a bit of work done to be acceptably shave ready. It can be done, but it will be pretty time consuming, especially with that prominent frown (the razor's edge is arched, where ideally it would be flat or with a very slight smile). I would tape off the spine (which has significant wear already) and reset the bevel on a coarse stone until the edge is as straight as I can get it. You'll need to grind down the heel of the blade first, or it will take ages. Once it is straight, it will require finer grit stones, followed by a light stropping on leather and it will lop off the tips of the hairs on your arm without coming close to your skin. The farther out you can cut the hair on your arm or legs and the less you can feel the hair move the sharper it is and then it is sharp enough for your face, but be careful to move the blade straight and parallel to the edge (absolutely no slant or side to side movement) or you will cut yourself.

Ive been thinking about getting some made from zebra wood with and extremely light stain. I'd love some from walrus ivory too, with matching handles for my pistol.

I think it was mainly just water with Wet/Dry sandpaper

You can see the difference in size of the sand scratches. you go until the previous sand scratches are gone, then move on to your next grit. And just keep doing that until you are satisfied.

You should shave with them, they're amazing.

@@yarimasu8760 A handle implies that's where you hold it. You actually hold it by the backend of the blade. The scales are simply to protect the cutting edge from damage when not in use.
