Join Ducks Unlimited in an impactful journey through "Restoring and Reconnecting the Klamath Basin," a heartfelt exploration into the vital efforts to revive one of North America's most critical wetland ecosystems. Once a vibrant hub for waterfowl, migratory birds, and other wildlife, the Klamath Basin has faced significant ecological challenges, leading to decreased water levels, loss of habitat, and declining biodiversity. This video takes you on a compelling narrative shared through the eyes of local conservationists and hunters, who have witnessed the basin's transformation and are now part of a critical mission to restore and reconnect its natural glory. Discover the Klamath Basin's historical significance, human intervention's impact on its water systems, and the ongoing projects aimed at re-establishing its role as a cornerstone for migratory routes. Perfect for environmental enthusiasts and those passionate about creating a sustainable and healthy future, this video is a call to action to support the restoration efforts that promise to bring back the abundance and diversity of life to the Klamath Basin.

Restoration of habitat for wildlife is a great work

People may tire of hearing me say this, but the river restoration will never be complete without protecting the streams and tributaries and allowing beavers to restore wetlands that will provide habitat for fish, game, and other wildlife, and will provide clean, cool water to the river during the hot, dry months of summer. Beavers will help to replenish groundwaters and reduce fire dangers. They are a keystone species, vital to the health of the river system.

Beavers are critical to all watersheds. Protecting the small streams that feed a large river are the veins to the artery. Protect it all!

Couldn't agree more. .global warming will disappear when the dams worldwide disappear. We cut off earth's circulation. Mother nature can heal if man gets out of the way. Scott Spillman

I’d love to see more regarding the projects ongoing and planned to heal the basin. Of course we all know about the dam removal, but what are the plans for returning water to the two lakes ( lower Klamath and Tule)?

Most people have no idea how big Tulee lake is.

You only need to drive through these communities to see all the shuttered businesses and lack of infrastructure. The farms and water are a driving force of economics in the north eastern part of the state. We are stewards of the land and have failed that region. I really hope to see things change in my lifetime for the better.

implementation of large bodies of fresh water mussels could/should be implemented into the basins recovery. ORGs have already plotted the locations in the river systems that holds whats left of the mussels and it shows none in the lake because its so deadly they cant take hold of it again. i think large scale breeding and beds/lines hung from buoys from the mouth of the rivers outwards (something like a wifi band think of oyster farming for sea kelp recovery) they can get fresh enough water to live and do the filtering. each mussel can filter between 5-10/15 gallons per day, they are highly valuable as a food source for other animals and decomposition. they use the fish to attach their tiny tiny babies onto the gills and live with the fish for a few weeks they go hand in hand with each other, two peas in a pod and they both want cleaner water to thrive once we do our part they will breed on their own again. farming practices were not mentioned at all and just as you said they gave alot of land to veterans but those veterans learned to farm the same way a college kid learns to cook just dump the bag, mix with water and hammer it with seasonings. removal of every riparian habitat for farm lands on the rivers left it without a spongy filter and so the cattle smash the rivers edge to pieces relentlessly sending more sediment and the "extra" nitrogen/phosphorus into the river where it gets damned up and later creates a cesspool depleting the oxygen in the water. there are rules in place that say that's not supposed to happen but we know how politics work. farmers learning to farm the soils through regenerative/restorative farming even as much as grazing the cattle appropriately and keeping the cattle off the riparian area like they are legally supposed to will help dramatically, IT WILL REBOUND, with a little help from a planted sapling or two it can be better even faster. beavers are still in the rivers they just don't have the food they need to build the dams where they should to store the water/expand the sections and slow the water and allow it to seep into the ground for the farmers/us. designing swales and water catchment systems/ tree lanes to slow wind speeds and breed various forms of microbial life this makes the soil itself alive and healthy again cover cropping sections not in use to replenish nutrients and biomass into the soil can be done to increase water retention/absorption with no more equipment than already on the property. also dont forget to cut down alllllllllll the non old growth juniper you can friends, one of if not the biggest culprit in the basin for water theft and native vegetation decline are those boogers and they are EVERYWHERE.

So is the refuge going to have water rights??? Do you have to be on the endangered list to get water rights???

Been following the downfall of these refuges for 20 plus years. This has nothing to do with DU. It's the collaborative agreements between farmers and the Indians. If it wasn't for the Irrigation Districts, those refuges would have no water. The refuge manager has been sitting on his hands using the biologist ( Vandenberg) to be his puppet. If it wasn't for John(V), the Irrigation districts and the farmers, I completely think those refuges would be forever gone.
