Failure of the display's DC-DC converter is common on the EVS9000E (EVS7000 NTSC version). Here we repair one.

Hi Colin, Really great job done with your video. The display on the "Jog-Shuttle unit" of my SONY EV-S9000E was completely dark....With your helfully contribution on RU-vid, I was able to solve the problem. Effectively, two capacitors (C204 - 470u 10V and C205 - 47 uF 50V) were degraded in capacity. After replacing them, the problem was solved. Without you help, I would not have found the cause. Thanks again for your excellent job. Roby

Thank you for the video! It helped me with the repair, especially the disassembling of the control panel. Although Sony used high quality electrolytic capacitors, some of the electrolytic capacitors were defective. Still a long lifetime after 25 years! In my case, the C204 470µF / 10V was defective / leaked. Prophylactical I changed all capacitors except C203 / 33µ / 16V. All electrolytic capacitors should be low ESR / 105 ° C types. C203 is an ultra low ESR - OSCON polymer electrolytic. It still had its original values and an ESR of 20mOhm. It should changed only by an equivalent type. Based on this experience, I consider whether I should check all the electrolytic capacitors in the SMPS and change them if necessary.

Power supply capacitors do fail in this machine, again use low ESR. It's fairly easy to work on. Life gets messier when the thousands of capacitors all over the main PCB start to fail. Also the SM capacitors in the timebase corrector often fail.

Smashing job colin :-D The pesky capacitors in switching supplys can never cope with the high frequency currents, and still boil the electrolite :-( I've replaced a lot of electrolitics in p.c supplys and laptop chargers, panasonic were my favorites, r.s semiconductors have them but being r.s they are not too cheap. Flourescent displays are so much nicer than led types, sadly they lose emmision and go dark, or the psu loses the whill to live lol :-D

Could you provide a list of the capacitors for the display as I would like to change them all.

Anyone know where I can obtain a replacement supply reel gear? (The one that cracks all the time on these units.)

They are pretty much unobtainable now.

Great video! I’m wondering if the same solution would bring my Panasonic NV-FS200’s display brightness back up.
@video99couk
@video99couk 4 года назад
I'm not sure the FS200 uses a DC-DC converter, you would have to check the service manual. It may be that the display itself has lost emission, this does happen with some displays. Also check that the inside of the front panel is clean, that can get a bit fogged up and reduce brightness.

I went through the service manual of the FS200, but I can't see a DC-DC converter in it at all, which is odd. On the other hand, I downloaded the schematics of its NTSC counterpart, the AG1800, where there is a DC-DC converter. Looks like I'll have to open that thing up.

I have a sony MDS-JB920 with a dim L/H VU meter bar and the PLAY triangle is dim aswell could you possible be kind enouth if i email you tge circuit diagram as i can sort this but just need a little help in the right direction Many Thanks Dsrryl

If certain segments are dim, then it will be due to VFD poisoning. Not much you can do about that apart from replace the display.

Does this solution apply to VHS VCR displays too? Replace bad capacitors.
@video99couk

It certainly applies to some other machines such as the Sony Betamax SL-C9, so it's likely to apply to certain VHS units too. You would have to look at the schematics for the video recorders in question, to see if they utilise a DC-DC converter in the display circuit, and if so then capacitor failure is certainly one of the reasons that the display can go dim. The other primary cause unfortunately though, is failure of the display itself. For example, the Futaba displays used in some JVC equipment are known for going low emission.

hi can you tel were i can find a transformer converter 1-423-845-11 for my ev-s9000e,the display is not working i already change al capacitors but the trasformer was to damage by the liquid of the capacitors .thak you your videos are very helpful,sorry about my englis.

Your only hope would be from a scrap machine. Keep looking on eBay for cheap non-running machines.

Hiya Colin I was wondering if you could help I have a Sony C20 with no capstan rotation I have found a site that tells me to check R530 on the SS 11 board but I cannot find it I'm pulling my hair out Please help thanks Andy
@video99couk
@video99couk 4 года назад
You could probably use the service manual, which is very similar between the C20, C30 and C40, so any of those should do it. Try this: elektrotanya.com/sony_sl-c30e_sl-c30ub_sm.pdf/download.html Capstan failure is not something I've ever seen on one of these machines, so that should be interesting.

If the machine otherwise works, take the bottom pcb out and replace capacitors in that metal screening can.
