Restoring Crockett & Jones Chelsea Boots

Davidsons Shoe Repair

Total renovation of a pair of 20 years old Crockett & Jones Chelseas. Poorly cared for and heavily worn, combined with sloppy repairs, made these shoes far beyond worth repairing. But they were perfect for a cool video. The biggest challenge was the destroyed heel stiffeners, that I replaced with new ones. The upper was badly damaged and needed a lot of repairing. Deep scratches and cracked creases were fixed, filled, boned and buffed, before dyed and polished. New elastics, heel lining, original tugs and heel socks.
Finally new JR leather soles with a discreetly bevelled waist.
The goal from the beginning was to fool the customer to believe that I had replaced his shoes with a brand new pair, but the upper and elastics was too stretched out to eliminate the creases. Hopefully he'll be happy anyway. (A previous cobbler had stitched on RMW heel tugs on them, making many people think they are RMW's. They are NOT)
Many questions about the price on this.
The customer got a negotiated price since I got to borrow the shoes for a long time for the making of the video. I would probably have to charge about 600€ for a job like that, normally. The shoes cost about 500€ 20 yrs ago. Quite difficult to price a job like this, since I choose to do more than necessary, just to make a cool video. Under normal circumstances I would probably deem them not worthy of repair, but the model is discontinued, and they are broken in to the customers feet. The job cost almost as much as a similar shoe would cost new.

My father was trained as a cobbler when he retired from the Royal Navy - he never worked as one but did mend our family's shoes in his garden shed. Whenever he needed specialist supplies he would take me with him to see the cobbler in town so I spent a lot of my childhood with my nose pressed up against benches stacked high with lasts, hides of leather, boxes of aglets, etc. And now I live in Northampton, where those shoes come from. I may have to visit the cobbler in my local village tomorrow, just to smell the shop!

I think they looked amazing. The thing is, when you buy a new pair of shoes, they look great straight out of the box but when you wear them you notice the wear etc. With the leather on those boots looking so subtle after years of use, they just look so comfortable. At the end of the day, people get attached to certain items and price becomes less important.
@jackcullen69
@jackcullen69 3 года назад
The price is probably worth it considering how long well made and maintained shoes can last. The customer can probably pass it on to their kids. Can't say the same for fast fashion

Well done. As an Italian, I have great respect for those that keep their art alive and work with their hands. Who needs university when a trade will make you a good, honest living for life. There's a Japanese dude in England making custom shoes for his well-heeled clients who charges £3k-£4k per pair with 6 months of work booked in advance, if memory serves. Especially in times when mass-produced junk is de-rigueur, hand-made is becoming lucrative.
@pietro4772
@pietro4772 2 года назад
@Mark D I would be doing a great disservice to my children if I were to advise them that university will impart them an education and/or wisdom and/or provide them with the tools necessary to be financially comfortable through their lives. What a monumental scam universities are. They are businesses. I have a degree and to any young person I would advise them to learn a trade. Remember, in a world of lawyers, consultants, human resources specialist and professors of crop circles, the man who grows tomatoes is king. He demands the price he wants. Call my comments stupid as much as you want but that only betrays the level of your distinguished education.
@pietro4772
@pietro4772 2 года назад
@Mark D Duly noted. Yet the cobbler and the farmer create whilst the remainder usually subsist on those who create but produce not a thing themselves. Modern day universities are the reason Western societies have become dependent on imported manufactured goods from other continents where labour and lives are cheap. Besides conditions akin to slavery in those continents, the additional evil is that Western businesses have been destroyed. My two rupees.
@pietro4772
@pietro4772 2 года назад
@Mark D You are a very poor ambassador for university learning. All you have offered this far in favour of universities have been cretinous insults. If I were your father, I would stop paying your university fees and rent.

I restore antique quilts. I found a double-bed sized Cajun themed one in a dump bin. Looked like it had been attacked by a pack of wild dogs. I carefully took it apart, and remade it. Time and effort (and yes.. love) make these things almost beyond price when you get finished. But looking at the results? THERE is the real payoff. People who love and respect the craft already understand that. Beautiful work, man....

The lengths gone through otherwise to restore these are exceptionally impressive, but I don't see why you wouldn't just do a new welt all the way around, especially for this caliber of boot/shoe.. nonetheless, good work.
