Yes, we know this video is long....but so is the process of rehabilitation! We know it's fun to watch a show where a whole house is finished and fabulous in 30 minutes or an hour, but that's not how it works in real life. Slow and steady wins the race when it comes to doing things right, and keeping a historic home standing for it's second century!
This weeks we finish window restoration, and installation-no small feat! Kevin finishes up the three step plaster repair, and manages to wrangle a number of flat head screws that are the bane of his existence.
Watch as Laine uses wood epoxy to sculpt and create replacement pieces for the Victorian mantle. We aren't sure what exactly happened to create the amazing amount of damage to this lovely antique piece, but we certainly know how to repair it, and show you how to do the same!
And why not throw in some antique hardware restoration and paint stripping at the same time? Because what else do we have to do?
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time! And that's how we are Restoring Our Victorian home!

I imagine the best part about finding an old home is finding one that still has it's original features. And the worst part about restoring an old home is undoing all the years of design decisions generations of people have decided to do in the name of style or to keep costs down. You two didn't pick an easy job, but it certainly seems very rewarding.

I love that you guys restore it back to the original wood! I am so blessed that when I purchased my Victorian, none of the woodwork had been painted or the transom window. ❤️

When I was a little girl, I would visit my dad's house on the weekends and would drive by old, deteriorating homes and would dream of buying one and fixing it up, restoring back to it's former glory and raising my children there. I would often say this exact dream and had several people tell me it's far-fetched and would never work. I found you channel after Louise and have watched your videos here and there and you really make it look possible. Thank you Laine and Kevin for these videos! Hopefully, one day, I could do this too! I can't wait to see the finishing results!

Go for it! We did and don't regret it. But be ready for some hard work and nasty/nice surprises. If possible live in the house and then redo but remember that these houses had their flow and climate so don't throw all the walls out ...

I can’t believe that beautiful wood was under all that paint. That’s why most people tear things out because all that paint makes it look old and beat up and cheap. No one would believe all that detail and expensive wood was there. My jaw dropped.

I have had better luck getting paint off of hardware with gentle heat rather than with a stripper. For small pieces, I simply cook the bits and bobs in a slow cooker for several hours. Works great. For great big pieces like yours, I plop a horse trough on the barbecue and start a low fire. It's more convenient on a gas barbecue that can be set for temperature but can be managed with charcoal or wood. Gentle heat, a slow simmer, over a long period of time is the trick. I have had strippers that discolored the hardware so badly I had to send it out to be re-plated. Love your channel - hope this helps. Yes, I am WILDLY excited to see the tiger oak mantlepiece restored to its former glory!

In the 1990s we restored an 1875 pioneer Danish cottage in central Utah. An elderly neighbor said it was built for a widow on order of Brigham Young. My husband is now 85, 75% blind, in chronic pain; I'm 2 yrs NED from stage 3 cancer. Watching your videos inspired me to lug out a carved door we rescued from the Sanpete County dump and find a place for it in our 1200 sf manufactured home. The information on Smart Strip was very helpful. We live in a famous forerunner of the post modern movement that was built in 1939. Not your cup of tea but some idiot painted over very lovely original paneling. We have SS, though probably didn't leave it on long enough. I love your series and it gives me the impetus to carry on with our wonderful home. Also planning to strip the hardware on the kitchen cabinets (original/handmade) as it makes the cupboards hard to close. Many thanks from Central California!

What a cute house! Can't wait to see the fireplace. In our 1898 Victorian, some idiot had painted the fireplace and mirror above sky blue! It took forever to get it out of the carving! I know painting wood was a sign of wealth in the Victorian era, but who is lazy or dumb enough to paint beautiful woodwork today? Or tear out architectural features completely? Go buy a ranch house from the 60s, and leave historical homes to those who want to restore, not ruin.
