Tier 4 Final...
Whether you love it or hate it, it's a hot topic in the industry.
Aaron and the BuildWitt crew visit Quinn Cat in Southern California during this vlog episode to talk to their folks about repowering machines to meet the Tier 4 emissions requirements.
There are more than a few CAT scrapers in this episode. And not just the ones being worked on in the shop at Quinn. The guys visited a job site with Sukut Construction where they got to have fun photographing their 657 scrapers hauling TONS of dirt.
Aaron explains why scrapers are a great option for mass earthmoving and also why it seems that Southern California is some sort of Scraper Mecca.
Believe it or not, he actually explains how the air coming out of the exhaust on one of the Tier 4 scrapers is actually, in theory, cleaner than the air going into it, in Los Angeles County.
If you want to learn more about Quinn Cat, check them out at www.quinncompany.com/.

DEF is one of the most corrosive liquids ever. I used to install and maintain DEF systems. Every fitting, screw or part needs to be either plastic or medical-grade stainless fittings. Anything else will be destroyed in short order. It also creates SHARP crystals that will slice you right open.

I said this once before and I am going to say it again - your audio recording (considering you film outside in construction zones) is absolutely pristine. Not a shred of wind noise. No LOUD music that makes me dive for the volume button. No stupid opening or closing on the videos. Just great information recorded in a VERY professional manor. I'll probably still be here when you hit your first million subs. Whoever maintains the audio levels in the final edit deserves a raise and should consult with a LOT of the larger channels to get their audio under control - I'm looking at you HeavyD Sparks - your audio is a$$.

Just take a look at Central Illinois. Things have slowed way down for this part of the State and Caterpillar. I lived here when the Russian oil line was dropped overnight. It was always eerie driving through Peoria and seeing half built factories. Most of the concrete pads and steel were in place. The failure of the Russians in Afghanistan, along with Reagan wanting nothing to do with the Russians, other than to drop the wall. You nailed it when you said the 80-90's were our greatest years of this nation. Let's hope there are a lot more people like Aaron not willing to accept that fact.

My question tho, being a mechanic and working predominantly with CAT gear would be do QUIN CAT update SIS with a repowered option when looking up parts and other service documents? Could be a hell of a trauma for the guys in the field doing subsequent repair work on a repowered machine with superceded documentation!

CAT is usually damn good about documentation and parts support. The biggest issue I see is just the unreliable SCR systems themselves. So are they only doing this to machines that need a rebuild or how does that work ? If there’s 651Bs out there still running with the original engine would it be allowed to run until it needs a rebuild then they would update it to tier 4 final or are they pulling running equipment off sites

@@AaronWitt that’s wild. Already expensive Cali is going to become even more pricey. Cost to pull and retro fit all that equipment is going to be enormous. Cost per yard is sure to increase. Increasing cost to develop. Be interesting to see the back log of equipment being retro fitted. Will keep the equipment manufacturers busy. Hopefully global supply of parts can keep up.

Lots of outfits here in Alberta still running old gear, 621G, 637K etc...now, repower to meet emissions, hmm no, let that old 3412 and 3306 block out the sun.

Curious what them repowers cost? Certainly cheaper then a new machine. But it’s sad these guys are being forced into doing this to machinery that is decades old and proven themselves to be reliable and reasonable to work on. No secret emissions aren’t cheap to work on and not always the most reliable.

not cheap but a lot cheaper than buying a new machine + the government pays for a big portion of it

It is also a lot easier to put someone in a scraper and say follow the guy in front of you and do what he does. There is very little thinking involved. The 57’s are the only ones worth having. No one is going to buy a 27 or 37 when you can buy a quad track with double 21 yard scrapers for much cheaper. You can a 620hp tractor put a push block on it and load them just as fast and much cheaper than a d9 or 10. That’s why you don’t see new scrapers. Also nobody with half a brain wants to run one when they can sit in a tractor that’s a lot smoother and just nicer to run.
@AaronWitt
@AaronWitt Год назад
I see a lot of newer scrapers haha no one runs tractors out west. They work great in softer conditions in the midwest / south though

The company I work for only uses hoe’s and side dumps and haul trucks. We work with the scraper company a lot and I am this week. I asked the owner of the scraper company this morning his opinion. He basically said the same thing as I did. He sold his last 4 27’s last week. He had 50 of them. There is still a place for 57’s but not any smaller. The $py is way less. 1 A quad with double 25’s hauls way more than a 27 or 37 obviously. 2 A quad is way cheaper. 3 A quad uses a lot less fuel 4 operators like them a lot more than a scraper. 5 The service is faster because there a a lot more mechanics. 6 You can pull huge rollers and disc with them. Should I keep going or are you starting to figure it out?
