The Archimedes Palimpsest is a 10th century manuscript of the mathematician's work. Unfortunately it was turned into a prayer book in the 13th century. Will Noel explains how he helped rescue the text in this weeks Ignite talk. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 United States License.

This was the most awesome project ever. I worked on it during a summer internship at SLAC and got to participate in scanning the last pages of the palimpsest. So much fun!

Just incredible, Will. I found this video so hopeful 13 yrs ago. But now, the ignorant have ascended in the US and UK. ...pretty hopeless times.

Damn, it's amazing how Noel managed to amass that much information in only 5 minutes. I read the book by Noel and Netz back in 2009 and it had a tremendous impact on me. I can't describe how happy I am that there are people out there who can actually think "let's make this available to all of mankind... for free." What a spectacular frame of mind. Bless be the owner of the palimpsest, who made it available for research and the public view, and everyone else involved in this restoration project.

Just started watching this and what an amazing thing it is. I remember seeing a tv program about it in the late 80s I think, might have been a bbc QED program. Anyway what amazed me most was the fact that Archimedes was beginning to use infinitesimals which are the beginnings of calculus. Calculus wasn’t fully developed until the late 17th century, Archimedes was living in around 250BC I think. Mind blowing….what a mind!

Deeply fascinating. I love this, from history to science to recovery of lost human knowledge and technology of bringing this back to life

Wonderful talk. I don't like the Ignites and TEDs since they usually end up being all pretence and no content, but this was something else. Go Will Noel!

Superb, I discovered the Stomacion by accident when searching fvor someting else, and via Wiki found this great 5 minute talk.... It makes one wonder how many early Islamic texts may have been written over even earlier Greek ones, and lost when ISIS burned the library at Mosul in Iraq...

Yes, this was a great exhibit, but the Walters had limited imagination about showing it electronically so that it wouldn't be confined to four walls. They should adapt trade show technology to create a compelling online exhibit!.

@unapologeticmind It has to say it all in 5 minutes.. that is why he speaks fast and that is why people sometimes laugh. I agree it is istructive but it is a show.
