Don't skimp on the brush. The cheap ones always shed bristles, and ruin the finish.

For the woodwork I used a wipe on polyurethane called Miniwax. It was a clear gloss which you apply with a soft cloth. About 20 coats. Denis

How have your cappings and dash been 5 years on. I need to do my cappings, I am being advised not to use hide glue because it isn't waterproof or heat proof. I watched your video and thought I would ask you your opinion before commencing.

Malcom, My vehicle is in the final stages of restoration and the woodwork has been sitting in a metal garage for five years. During that time we have had periods of high humidity and temperatures in the low 50c. The condition of the woodwork is unchanged. Yes, I removed the old veneer with a hot iron and a damp cloth, but it had been in place for over sixty years. Synthetic glues should be resistant to heat and moisture, but that doesn't mean that the wood wouldn't suffer some form of damage. Denis

What material did you use to make the patterns? Thanks for your tutorial. I'm in the process of veneering a Jaguar.

I used a burl walnut veneer from a supplier I found online - I selected it based on the photos they posted on their site. I don't recall who the supplier was. You just need enough length to book match the dash. Denis

@@mydiyvehiclerestoThanks Dennis, but I was talking about the type of paper you used as a pattern to cut the veneer. I already have the walnut burl.

@@kristenconstable2946 Sorry. I just used ordinary lunch wrap paper as it is both tough and reasonably transparent. Denis

did you do a video showing you doing the actual dashboard. Also did you soften the veneer before starting ? I am about to attempt a dash board from a Wolseley 24/80, and I'm having trouble sourcing the veneer softener.
@mydiyvehicleresto
@mydiyvehicleresto 5 лет назад
Yes it was the actual dashboard from the Consort. What you see on the video is what i did to apply the veneer. I only used the hot hide glue. If you apply lots of glue on both sides of the veneer, it softens the veneer. My dash curves 90 degrees on each end and i was able to use the hammer to push it around the curve.

@@mydiyvehicleresto Thankyou Denis for your reply. I wasn't aware that you would glue over the face. I am looking to use a ready mixed Hide glue available from Carbatec which is used cold and has a slightly longer work time. Your videos are excellent and nice that you're here in Australia.
@mydiyvehicleresto

@@trebmodist2242 The hot glue on both sides of the veneer seems to have two affects; it softens the veneer; and provides a lubricant on the face of the veneer which makes it easier to use the Hammer. Denis
