The entire front third of the trailer needs to be rebuilt and there are soft spots in the floor. We start by removing the front exterior skin, the wooden framing and finally the interior paneling. Then we will tackle the floor.

Well Lary- this is where I'm at, year Dec 2022. Trying to decide what to do with my indescribable mess and if it's worth it to start or just sell the base of the trailer. Thanks for making this video for all of us. I saw also that the junk wood on the base is something I would look for an alternative for. Thank you.

@Desertphile You are correct. It didn't even have much in the way of insulation in front. I wlil be adding insulation and a moisture barrier. Good eye DP...

I've been wondering about a moisture barrier for the walls. I just haven't progressed that far, but I do have questions about keeping the water out and a proper integrity of the structure. I'm hanging on every word. Thanks.

@@daultonruff2281 Some do the walls and some don't. Gravity usually takes care of that problem but then that moisture settles slowly into the skirt boards. So it would be good for protecting the lower portion of the trailer all the way around.

I love your videos! It is no exaggeration to say I laughed out loud many times in the DeVille series, but I roared with the destroyer kick on this one. Great comedy and great tips!

Bwahahaaa!! Evil laugh as he kicks in the front of it. Comes apart a lot easier than it goes back together, doesn't it.

@lonestar45 No reason you couldn't if you were to expose all the wood. That would require total disassembly of the trailer. But it's not necessary if you seal the outside up properly. Shasta didn't build these things to withstand the elements. They were cheap production trailers that were built with flimsy materials and poor design quality. They were not designed to last 50 years by any means.

i have a question about resoration on campers. I know you said you use KILZ paint on the camper floors but why not use it on all the non exposed wood structure? Would it take just too much time are the cost of the materal!

I have an old trapper and I can't figure out how to remove the cabinets. I want to re-use them so I don't want to destroy them. How are they held in place?
@mobiltec
@mobiltec 6 лет назад
They are held in with wood screws on the inside framing AND screwed in from the outside into the cabinet framing. If you are not removing the metal skin you will have to just cut through them with a multi-tool or a sawzall. They are screwed in from the outside in places because the cabinets are a huge part of the structural integrity engineered into the design. I wander if the plywood part of flooring can be replaced using particle board. My husband can get scrap for free at work with permission from his boss that is a good heavy quality. We were discussing this last night
@mobiltec
@mobiltec 11 лет назад
NO!... Particle board will deteriorate to nothing as soon as it get's wet. Even if you seal it. Don't use it. And instead of using a layer of the sound board and a layer of ply wood, use one single piece of plywood 7/8 inch thick or what ever thickness you need to meet up with the rest of the flooring material. That's the way I'm doing it from now on.

Ok thanks. Luckily my brother is in restoring and remodeling business as far as regular homes so he can get me discounts on supplies such as this. I hope to end up with a beaten up rescue because though it may be a lot of work, we can build things exactly like we want.

Do you still use the "destroy it" technique after all these years? haha
@mobiltec
@mobiltec 3 года назад
You know that worked fine for the front wall of that trailer but it can be a little destructive so I don't recommend it...
