Beijinos e abraços,
Carissa, Iwan, Frankie & Albi
Carissa, Iwan & Frankie decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month they were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call their new home. We picked up Albi the cat along the way. Subscribe to follow our journey as we turn an old stone barn into our home, and learn the ropes of looking after a piece of land to make an abundant garden and one day, our very own wine

There's another channel I watch of off grid homesteaders in Portugal. They only cut down (scrim?) areas around their buildings, wood store, around planting beds and walkways. For everything else they let their flock of 4 sheep out to graze. They can control where the sheep go and how long they stay in an area to avoid over grazing. Their sheep are 'rescues' which is also nice. That seems a very eco friendly (and fun) way to manage tall grass and weeds.

@@FrankieOffGrid oh dear 😪 I lived in Ohio the years we heated with wood.. Now I'm in NM where the woods are soft.. They burn hotter but quickly and my first year of dealing with it was awful.. Also most of what I had was green. It was a terrible year. This year I've learned the different wood types and almost all of it is seasoned. Good luck. Out here are only pine trees.. Evergreens no deciduous ones. The oak we have are just scrub bushes and I look for them because they burn longer

Eucalyptus wood is very resinous so make sure you get the chimney cleaned regularly so it doesn't catch fire! Maybe mimosa wood would be less resinous if another one falls over? Could you turn the lower field into a wild swimming pool, rather like Project Portugal? Anyway, a large pond to save all the water for the summer would be a very good idea rather than letting it all run away.

Hi I live in Sonoran desert in Tucson Az with plenty of prickly pears. They get too top heavy and fall over. All you need to do is cut off some of the top pads and stick them in the ground they grow like weeds. In spring when the new pads develop there good to eat. You can go online and see how they cook them. M Tucson Az

A lot of learning and much hard work ahead but you are the right age to do it now and sit back later and enjoy the fruits of your labour. Chestnut is the best for heat and burns slowly but I have no idea whether it grows in Portugal. In France it wasn’t easy to buy but well worth it if you can. I wonder if planting one or two trees that love water is an idea. Like willows as they would be far away from house so not to intrude on any foundations etc. I have no idea but no doubt someone will know .

The problem with eucalyptus wood is that it explodes in the stove and it burns very quickly because of the resin, and because of the resin the flue can catch fire if not often cleaned. Cheap wood = worse wood.

I like how u relate to your animals! They look very healthy and happy. Btw eucalyptus is not resinous. In Portugal that species was introduced in the 19th century mostly for the paper pulp industry and because it grows faster compared to other native species. It has one major drawback; dries the soil of water and seems to deplete the soil of nutrients very fast.

Iwan you need to get a french drain installed quite a simple task really just quite a bit of digging to get the channel dug and them you install a liner which is called DRAINTEX Geotextile Fabric then inside that you put the drainage pipe which has holes in it you fold that over to close it then put sometype of pebbles or rubble over that then backfill with the soil ..alternatively you could also just dig in some sumps which could be around 6ft square by at least 20 inches deep space them out along the effaced water lying areas use any type of stone /rubble to backfill them almost to full and just return a couple of inches of soil back over the top to finish them off
