You are not alone in the 'small' onion problem. After many failed attempts....well you'll understand right away. A wonderful older gentleman that always has the most outstanding colourful gardens you can imagine, came over to ask me why I kept fussing in the same area. Told him my dilemma and he started laughing. "Girl, it's the easiest thing ever! All you need to do is bare the top half of the bulb the last part of growing season." Needless to say nobody laughs at my onions anymore ! I love my neighbour he sure saved me some grief! BTW You two are adorable. God bless you and your garden. lol Much love from Beautiful B.C.

Considering the parameters in question, I wouldn't call this a failure of any kind. You were tremendously successful in producing healthy, delicious food. You were successful in continuing to condition your soil for subsequent seasons of gardening. You have proven that the Ruth Stout method can produce a crop, even in the first season. You have proven that companion planting is very beneficial. And you have proven you can produce interesting RU-vid content. Where's the failure in any of that?

Great videos! I'm no "expert" but I've gardened most of my 60 years. I think you'll find with onions that you need to pull back the mulch to expose the bulb and just keep those roots covered. Keep up all your great efforts!

Not certain the type of pine trees that you have, but we gather the pine needles on the ground and put them in a compost heap with mulched leaves and till it into the garden, where we plant the root vegetables. It has helped to loosen our hard packed soil quite a bit for our root crops. Tom's wife.

Root vegetables need loose easy to penetrate soil (TO GROW BIG), but they also do an outstanding job of loosening and penetrating the soil. The first year or two in any garden is going to be development for the soil health and tilth. If I was in your shoes I would grow ANOTHER root vegetable in those same places, like maybe turnips, beets, kohlrabi, and celeriac along with whichever companions works best with them. After season two of growing root veggies in that location and deep mulching, your soil will become like brown gold.

Excellent evaluation and critique of your project. Root veggies need supplimental fertilizer to grow big, especially carrots and onions. Even if it's well composted chicken or cow manure it still means a season or two to compost. The other point is if you let the weed grow, the weeds act similarly to an un-thinned out row of carrots crowding out the roots you intended to grow and you've wasted all your bed's nutrients to an inedible competitor.

Thanks for sharing this method, I have been searching for this type of gardening for about a year I just didn't know what it was called. My grandpa had a huge beautiful garden using a similar method when I was a little girl. He grew everything this way. The only difference he did was add chicken manure to his hay in the fall to break down with the hay and I believe he added it again off and on throughout the growing cycle, but I am not sure about that. I live in the deep south in the USA so my garden was started in Feb. I am doing container gardening this year to see how it goes. So far I have only lost two seedlings so I'm feeling pretty proud of myself. Normally, by this time in my growing cycle I'm lucky to have a single tomato plant left hanging on for dear life. I invested in a couple of bunnies and they have offered a much needed fertilization I guess I had been missing. I think next year I am going to give this a try. Thanks again.

Potatoes and tomatoes can be used to loosen soil. In order to get a bigger crop, you need more fertilizer. That applies a lot to onions. The grass covers the onions and cartots, so that might be the reason for no pest attacks.

The small size of carrots is more likely to have been caused by the higher nitrogen (from your compost) proportion. High levels of N will give you a full, bushy green top but little growth under the soil. To get bigger carrots it may be a good idea to increase manure vis a vis compost. The manure will add calcium, potassium, iron and phosphorus - what the plant needs to grow bigger root (in this case).
