Livestock Salt Block - amzn.to/2l3O67N
Our Trail Camera - amzn.to/2l3OlQf
Dog Trap - amzn.to/2kHG2gE
---
We've had a lot of issues with our deer field being disturbed - from dogs to cows - yes, cows - we just haven't been able to get a lot of attention in our deer field.
But we did have more pictures and videos of deer putting their mouth on 1 of the salt blocks more than the others.
The kids guessed what number I was thinking to decide who got to show the winning block.

If I can offer an observation. I raise fish and I add a significant amount of sea salt which is mostly sodium chloride for the fish. I grow plants in the same water to remove the nitrogen. The plants do not need sodium choride but the animals do so it is a balancing act. My point is that deer eat plants and that does not supply the amount of sodiium chloride they need so that is your answer. The animals want good old salt for the sodium choride. Thank you for the great video.

Jens Williamson, III (Deaf) I just put the salt block on the woods at my small ranch (own). I know that the deer want some salt, anyway. My idea is to pour some apple juice on salt block so the deer can smell from apple juice within 300 yards away. Almost Guarantee! Simple! It works...You will know. Okay! Thanks for your time. J&J, would be great to have a little bit more data as in where do you live and what season is this... Don't need specific but just an idea, like north east or south west, US or Canada and early summer or end of spring. Also, you said you were gonna leave the blocks for a year, what ended up happening? Quick tip : saw it in the comments but maybe try putting the white plain salt block to the right of the picture, just to see ;) Thanks!

I actually did a similar test using a trophy rock, rack rock, salt block, and sugar beet block. I also used big&J legit. I placed them on stumps and poured apple buck jam on them. 1 month later I came to pull the camera card. Surprisingly , they hit it this order. 1. Rack rock 2. Big and J 3. Trophy rock 4. Salt block 5. Sugar beet block. The rack rock was smaller but hit 3-1 more than the bj and trophy rock. The deer even chewed up the stump it was on pretty good. The trophy rock was about twice as big and lasted a bit Longer however I replaced the rack rock and they went back to it again over the others. I thought the deer would nail the trophy rock and salt block. Saying this , I would financially put down a trophy rock with a small salt block and be totally satisfied. Those little magic rack rocks are like 12$ for a 6lb block. I wish I'd compiled a video for this test.

I poured a huge bag of rock salt back where I hunt in the swamp on some higher ground, that would get wet, and the deer bombarded the place, eating the soil, and even tearing into a stump on which I poured some of the salt. Did it after hunting season in Upper Michigan, and checked it during the winter, tracks galore, and in the spring was when it was obvious they were craving it.

The deer are going to dig into the ground where you have those blocks and eat the dirt. I have 4 sites on our hunting Land and that is what they have done. I stopped putting out big blocks as people started running off with them. Now i break down the big blocks and put them broken down in the holes the deer have made and cover them with mud.

I learned a long time ago 60 plus years go buy you a 50 lb sack of Morton table salt!!!! Get you a shovel turn the ground over break it up real good pour your salt in the broken ground mix it up, and pat it down hard!!! You need to dig down in the ground about 6 to 8 in makes your salt and dirt up because that's what deer used to!!!! If you've ever been around old homesteads that had a smokehouse on them you'll find that's the best deer lick there is!!!

YES thank you putting out blocks all over your hunting areas in the woods during the off season like summer is better than corn feeders you have to refill about weekly and raccoons eat the corn the most. The meat is better when using salt vs corn. Also If you drill a hole in the block and put a rebar in a stumb that you cut deep with a chainsaw the block will flow salt into the stump and attract for years so a stand 50 to 100 yds will be good for years also. Add a little molasses at hunting start for a parade of meat to choose from.

set the brick or blocks on a stump so when it rains and the blocks erode the stump will soak it up and the deer will actually eat away at the stump to get the salt/minerals. that way no wasted product

The best results that I have had with north Louisiana swamp deer is the reddish trace mineral bagged salt mixed with a dirt pile . I will have deer visit at every hunt after they feed on the corn and rice bran. The dirt pile (pushed up with a front-end loader) will turn into a hole by spring. Tried regular salt also but the red salt works best after the rain kills the chemical smell of the fresh salt. Bonus: use a Cojo gun safety magnet.

hey just watched your video part 1 and 2. loved the video experiment and because of this I will probably end up just getting a salt block over the others. BUT I am curious on the next update, just because I have always been under the impression that deer( mainly bucks) go for salt/mineral blocks through the summer more so than the winter. for antler growth and wat not. but I'm still learning my self. I'm not criticizing lol

Thanks for watching! Rest assured, I'm no expert myself! The blocks will be staying out there - but you know how the stores are, they put the blocks out at deer season, so that's when I thought to buy them and try it out. Maybe I need to buy the stuff in winter, hold it in my shed, and try this experiment again in the summer!
@MultiAmeoba
@MultiAmeoba 7 лет назад
In summer deer eat a lot of green stuff (plants). So they consume a lot of potassium. Potassium raises the need for salt in a deer's body. They'll hit em a lot in the summer, but barley touch em in the winter. Salt goes cold in winter. They just don't need as much it in their diet at this time.

I get where you are coming from, but if you only put out 1 at a time for a week even more variables come up - was the weather bad one week and the deer didn't move much, or did the deer just not like the scent of that block? Those type of things.

Yes stores put them out for deer season because unscrupulous hunters & poachers in off season use salt blocks to attract the deer around their blinds, because they're too lazy to hunt the right way & only want fast & easy targets for their trophy hunts. That's why some states have the regulations prohibiting them. Sorry about the rant but I'm soon to be 64 & was raised in the high Sierra's of California & was raised to respect the animals I was hunting & never to hunt for trophy's or for pure sport, only for the meat they provided our family. I know your video was not intended for that & appreciate your care for your wildlife.
