Here's a guide showing how I assembled the Zarcade Mame Gear mod kit into the shell of my over 30 years old original Sega Gamegear shell, not only making it operational again, but better than ever!
More information about the mod kit can be found here: www.zarcade.uk/

After watching this clip I went and bought one of these kits to rebuild my dead game gear that I bought new in the early 90s. It's a very well designed kit. Thanks for the video.

That’s a great tutorial! I have 2 GameGears, one had been “Mcwillized” with a modern screen and VGA out, while the other is still in its original state, in order to work with the GameGear TV cartridge which tunes in to the broadcasting from a small analog TV transmitter on my indoor drone. Now, I gotta look for a 3rd GameGear for this mod. Thanks for sharing this gd stuff!

This is excellent I'm currently re-capping 3 game gears, 2 are working fine, the last one has a problem which if I can fix I'll still sell, but if not I think I will do this mod on it, as I also have a mcwill screen which I will prob put in one of the working ones, not sure yet. But great video again, thanks

Charles said in the Q&A that there is set up on the board for shoulder buttons, I'm looking to put the biggest sd card That Pie will take and a 6 button set up will come in handy (I bought the 4 button kit).

I just bought this kit, I'm looking forward to assembling my game gear from 1991 that I purchased by selling laffy taffy on the middle school play ground. The Past Rules!!! Thank you for the walk through ;)

Good luck with the build. Just to let you know, if you use stand-offs to help support the pi3a+ like I did then they might interfere with the cartridge if you decide to complete the look by putting a cartridge in the slot. I got around this by disassembling a cartridge and just using the front plastic cover off it, which I held in place with double sided tape so I can take it out easily if I want to. I did also fit a USB socket in the expansion port, which I should do a quick video on.

@@richardcapewell6919 I have some old cartridges that can be gutted. You should do a video, I'll look forward to seeing it.

Is there a reason the kit uses a Pi 3A rather than a 4 with 4GB or even 8GB or RAM? Just feel like there would be a lot of additional systems you'd be able to emulate, and it would be a huge overall upgrade. I could be missing the reason, as it seems that there is probably a huge amount of thought and planning behind taking a product to market. Nice video bud! I'm going to give a couple of these a go once I get through this cache of 31 DMGs I stumbled upon for ~$18 each, and 21 of them work 100%, 6 of them have display lines, 3 have completely dead displays, and the last one looks the best ironically but doesn't do anything. Voltage is present in the proper places, but drops out upon power. Power board is fine. Anyway, the lot was a great price, but all of these replacement screen kits, a mix of RIPS V4 and funnyplaying, along with some cleanpower built in battery mods and some rechargeable batteries. Backlight kits for 10, new speakers in all. I'm keeping 5 dead stock. Shells just came out of 30% H2O2 and look absolutely amazing! Only needed 6 new shells which will be sanded and painted for other projects... It's all turned into work and losing it's fun, but once it is done, I will have plenty of new capital to start doing fun mods like this!!

Great video! Question: can you use the original power board (and AA batteries) and the original sound board with the new main board? Or do you have to replace everything?

Thanks! Glad you liked it! The Zega boards replace all the original boards so you don’t keep any of the originals. I used my original speaker and buttons though. You also get rechargeable batteries with the Zega kit so you don’t use AA batteries anymore (which is a good thing, I remember how my gamegear ate batteries!)

A strip of electrical tape on the cartridge slot will help :)

Thanks for the tip. I had thought about that, but was worried that one or more of the pins on the pi3a+ might puncture the tape when the gamegear case is closed up. In the end I decided it wasn’t worth the risk since I’m filling the cartridge slot with a game cartridge to complete the look anyway.

Can you remap the buttons on that retropie build? I'm thinking about the Genesis emulator by using the Start button as A, B or C, and then use the lateral Select button as Start.
@richardcapewell6919
@richardcapewell6919 2 года назад
I don't think you could do that, since the select button is needed by retropi for a hotkey. However if you want to play Genesis, there is a four button kit, you just drill a couple of extra holes and the additional buttons and membranes are supplied. The circuit board can handle the extra two buttons. Looks pretty good too, although I wanted the stock look for mine.

@@richardcapewell6919 thanks for that answer Richard. Yes, I noticed they also offer the 4 button option but I prefer the original look of the console. Maybe because I have such found memories of this device I'd like to keep its original beauty 🙂
