Resurrection of the Daleks with New VFX (updated version) (Classic Doctor Who)

It's been well over a year since I started doing these so I decided to revisit some of my earlier efforts and render them in 1080p rather than 720p (for some reason I thought 720p was fine, since the source material was DVD, but some effects look a bit pixelated and even worse after going through RU-vid's shit filter). Just to clarify though, the source material is NOT upscaled in any way, it's still the OG DVD resolution, it's just the rendering that's HD.
Since this was the very first one I ever did I also wanted to add some of the things I'd learned over the last year, and I wasn't too happy with how this looked when comparing it to my later efforts.
So, once again, here's Resurrection of the Daleks, one of the bleakest Dr. Who stories ever, with some shiny new VFX!
0:13 - I added some extra muzzle flashes just to see how it would look. Jury is still out.
0:22 - It's a bit blink and you miss it (it's only three or four frames I think), but I added bullet holes to the guy's coat and a bit of smoke.
0:29 - I added a few more bells and whistles to the teleport effect. It's a little bit Star Treky now :-)
0:41 - As this shot of the Dalek cruiser was shot on film, you get a duplicate frame every 4 or 5 frames, and this makes it look weird if you add new effects that don't have the duplicate frames. So I removed the duplicates which gives it much smoother movement, and doesn't look too jarring with the new effects.
0:56 - I didn't make many changes to my original time tunnel other than adding a little extra glow and glare.
1:22 - Other than rendering these shots in a higher resolution I also tried to make the Dalek ship look less like a cut-out (which it is). I think it was moderately successful!
1:42 - For the battle scenes I redid the Dalek lasers to match the style I used in subsequent efforts, but I didn't make much change to the goodie lasers other than perhaps speeding their animation up a bit.
2:23 - Before I did this work (the first time) I don't think I'd ever noticed that it's the same three people getting shot twice. Unlucky.
2:53 - For many of the scenes I added new Dalek laser effects, and accompanying sounds, because it just felt like it needed it in some places. Here, for example, the blinded Dalek shoots randomly a couple of times, which feels like a natural reaction for a death machine that's just been blinded.
3:45 - This is a scene where I added a few more shots from the goodies (particularly Zena, who is basically spamming her fire button), and also added the correct sound effect for the weapons over the top of the wrong ones.
4:34 - When I did this originally I added flashes of colour to the whole screen (I didn't quite get how masking worked on layers yet), so for any laser blasts I've localised the flashes of environmental light, which I did for all my later work.
4:40 - No, that's not Lytton that gets shot (he feigns death just behind this poor guy)
6:00 - I didn't want to overdo or obscure the original model explosion too much, because it's pretty great, but I tried to add a bit more oomph to the explosion.

The Hired Guns get clapped. The Daleks get aids and die. Davros spent to much time consuming his own supply, thus also got aids and died. The Gurads were given mall security levels of training and weopons, and thus were all clapped go death. And Tegan is traumatized to the point of never having fully recovered by new who. Even with the help of Ace, Mel, K-9 or Sarah Jane.

I love how from _Genesis_ ~ _Revelation,_ to be hit by a Dalek’s weapon is _particularly_ excruciating, and even after the green-blue irradiation fades away the victim can still remain alive and standing for quite a few seconds as they stare in shock and disbelief before they drop down dead . . . It’s even a sort of plot point here in that although Stien is blasted by the Daleks in front of the now-primed station self-destruct controls he still has enough time and composure to launch himself onto the module to active it.

I suspect it's more to do with that generation of actors, many of whom primarily worked in the theatre of that era and as a result had developed a style that might politely be called "theatrical"

They couldn’t have chosen a bleaker location for this shoot. Shad Thames in 84 is a whole world away from how it is now. In fact, an apartment there in Butlers Wharf is still my lottery win residence of choice.

I recall this episode also missing a lot of audio elements, as in you'd see the flash for the Dalek's disruptors, but no sound, and random soldiers just going "Aiee!" and falling over.

Someone needs to do a Kill Count on this episode! Just a stupid amount of death, as highlighted in this video. As of 2021, Resurrection of the Daleks has the highest on-screen body count of any televised Doctor Who story, with 76 deaths.

Just a tip. At the start the submachine gun has a silencer on it which would eliminate any muzzle flash. So adding that in makes it look unrealistic.

This is why Dr Who is in dire need of an updated version like Star Trek. And I don't mean just "optional" effects, they should be the standard. The old effects should be the DVD extra! Trekkies were up in arms about replacing the effects back when they first did it, but now no one cares and Star Trek TOS is all the better for it.

@@cunningmunki if we could all wish it upon you I’m sure we would Munki, but unfortunately the BBC seem deliberately trying not to let the fans get their hands on their old cash cow too much, intermittent and patchy quality special editions only, my theory being it’s for fear the audience might be so happy with what they last got that they’ll stop buying the next overpriced under-improved boxset that mostly only slightly tweaked the contrast a bit.

I first noticed this style of updated ("overlaid") VFX on the 6th-7th Doctor regeneration … which is fine for personal experiments, but on a professional product for sale I want to see something that's not 100% adding luminance to the picture. Sometimes the new effect has to darken the image too, not just lighten it. (I have a theory that the images are always displayed "darker" on SDR LCDs and OLEDs than they were originally designed to be seen on CRTs, since TVs got less contrast for a decade after flat panels were introduced … so the "original" footage looks darker than it truly did when it was first seen).
@cunningmunki
@cunningmunki 3 месяца назад
@@whophd I don't fully understand what you mean, but these effects are not just "100% adding luminance to the picture". 90% of these are entirely new VFX. Perhaps you might need to watch the original again 🙂
@whophd

@@cunningmunki Hmm what about if I say "the new effects are usually brighter than the ones they replace"? Or maybe I'm thinking of certain examples like the glow effect, which is probably always used without reducing the overall picture exposure. This gives away the anachronism maybe.
@cunningmunki
@cunningmunki 3 месяца назад
@@whophd yep I see what you mean. Often the effect on the whole frame depends on the scene, for example, the light from the "laser gun" should realistically alight it's surroundings and unless that's done in-camera you're left with few options but to lighten, or partially lighten the surrounding frame. This can sometimes result in some artifacting or an unrealistic increased exposure, especially in dark scenes, of which there are many in this story, but without the ability to add HDR it's unfortunately unavoidable and only fleeting. But I take your point about the rest of the frame becoming underexposed due to the increased points of light, so I might experiment with that in future, so thanks for the tip!
@whophd
@whophd 3 месяца назад
@@cunningmunki In fact were you thinking about how the camera lens would REACT to the brightness, and after a split second the exposure would DUCK! That's going to look quite realistic. I've been thinking more about how to describe my frustrations that were mostly subconscious: When a super bright object glows (think of the Silver Nemesis statue in Season 25), a real camera with a real object would tighten its lens right down, to reveal details and the face. It would still SEEM bright of course, and clearly the glowing light would be spilling into surrounding areas of the image - a familiar technique. But my frustration is when the image details get smudged into a whiteness-nothing, with no more headroom for brightness. In fact these "white" images were intended to be viewed more brightly when we had CRTs, because the contrast and brightness went down once the revolution of flat panels started (until HDR, but that's still starting slowly). Take a look at the new videos on my channel in the past week ... I've done some careful grading and mapping of the 1988 vision, and adapted it for my very modern HDR display (1600 nits, a fairly high standard right now). What you specifically are going to find incredible is that when I was working on each scene - naturally I had to validate the mapping scene-by-scene - I discovered that the new CG sequences didn't fit the brightness curves of the original. The new material is calibrated to what is now "SDR" 100 nits, so I can't grade it with anywhere near the same strength as the original 1988 video material. In fact I had to change my LUT (lookup table) entirely to a film-based one, that suited it far better (I've found the same thing when a film insert has been recaptured directly to digital in the DVD or Blu-ray era), and even then I had to detune the LUT by 33%-50% to match the adjacent material. Wow.
