Many memories of going to my local Radio Shack after school in middle school and looking in catalogs and getting soldering kits for less than 10 dollars. What a great way to use my hard-working allowance. Now I have to order any components and just just walking down the street.
Woah, awesome to see an operational Radio Shack in 2023. I haven't been to one since probably 2017. Radio Shack reminds me of niche little parts for electronics too because my grandpa went there for things like specific batteries or capacitors because he works on a lot of electronics. There’s most likely one in your area, probably in a rural location owned by a similar car audio place that held on to the independent franchise as the corporate stores closed. The RS website is being updated at the moment. The brand was recently bought and it sounds like they have some plans to grow the brand again… let’s see…
A good freind of the family worked at Radio Shack for years and everytime I came home to visit, I would always go in and chat and look at stuff. I really do not understand how they went from being huge to almost nothing in just a few short years. Great place to shop.
Through the years… here’s a few things that just piled on to the end… People stopped fixing electronics and just began throwing away and replacing Everyone else started selling computers and cell phones and tvs, so no one went to RS anymore. Big box and online took over and no one wanted to go to the mall or an inline strip mall for a RS… Obviously other things added up to the end, but these are some I think of. Their catalogue did all the work for them, so many items that you would never know they had just be wandering into a location. The one near me was next to a hobby shop and an Dairy Queen, So a trip there meant a really good time for a kid, especially if you had a new toy sitting on the table with you at DQ before you went home. Unfortunately ALL of them in Canada converted to the source, which is nothing but overpriced phones and phone adapters. Haven't been in one in well over a decade, just a terrible chain. Good vid, brought back fond memories.

I remember the staff at RS being really on point in the mid 80s to mid 90s when it came to parts for any electronics… then I think management shifted to focusing on phone sales and the staff were never paid well and overworked so the experience for the customer became negative…. 😢
Wow, this video really brought back some memories! I remember going to RadioShack in the early 2000s and seeing their Nextel push-to-talk phones. The store was part of a strip mall that also had a Coconut Music store nearby - do you remember those? Happy holidays and a Happy New Year to you too!
Oh damn! Coconut Music! I totally forgot that store. There was one on route 18 in east Brunswick and then a vitamin shoppe took it over. Nextel push to talk! That sound will live forever! 😂 Same to you on the holidays and new year!!

Loved RadioShack as a kid. I'm actually not sure why they failed. I never really had a bad experience. Even their house brand products were always at least half decent. However, I think now radio shack would have a really good chance of making a comeback. Mostly due to the advent of 3D printers and the whole "Maker" movement.
There’s a bunch of videos about the decline. I think they really do have a chance to rebound as more and more people are using their brains to learn about repairing versus replacing. It’s good for the mind and the wallet! 🎉 Let’s see what the new owners of the brand hopefully do…
I hope they bring back Tandy computers. Imagine a remake of a retro Tandy PC (with an SSD hard drive) and have it boot into Deskmate - I would soooo buy one!
I just found an outside pic of the RS in Compton Towne Center. Was that the location you went to back in the day? Sad to see these places almost extinct, but let’s see if the brand booms up in a new way. 🎉
Heck yeah I'm gonna for sure have to make a stop next time I'm on my way to see family in Charleston, as the last one here in the Aiken Augusta area was in N. Augusta next to Walmart that was also a company owned Sprint store that sadly went away with the bankruptcy, at least we got a 1/2 decent Tropical Smoothie place out of it 😅
Tropical is pretty good. At least it’s not fried junk! Yea, stop by this radio shack. It’s cool to be in one and think about how it used to be the spot back in the day for most electronics and parts and batteries.
@@charlestonpinballarcade For sure, and Radio Shack back in the 80's, and early 90's before my grandfather stopped driving was the only place he would get batteries from, as he claimed they were less likely to leak, and he also got me my first soldering iron from there with him teaching me how to repair his portable GE radio after a cap blew up. Great memories!! 😊
@@CommodoreFan64he might be right on the leaking batteries… I have had pinball machines where the batteries have leaked and ruined the boards…. But the batteries were always Duracell. Energizer sometimes leaked and I actually don’t remember coming across radio shack batteries in any old vintage solid state boards.
Not sure on the sizes, but they definitely had a bunch of brands and Wilson sticks. Give a call and ask. The owner might have them or can order in. Thanks for watching!
