Sometimes I get to enjoy the live show, other times I tune in after the fact. Either way, this podcast is something I look forward to each week and I consider it a highlight to every Friday. Congrats on 350 Phil. Looking forward to many more!
Phil, I had a beautiful pup, Rusty…Great Pyrenees/Husky mix male. When he was 5 he began having seizures. The Dr. believed it to be Epilepsy. He was prescribed diazepam, which we administered as soon as the seizure ended. Always gave him some fresh vegetables with meals. God Bless him; he stayed with us seventeen fantastic, great quality of life years, until he passed in his sleep. 😓🙏. Don’t give up hope with your pup. Hoping this helped a bit. You and your pup are in our prayers. 🙏🙏🙏
Contact cement works well for tolex, but it is unforgiving. Once you place it, it cannot be shifted. I've had success with basic wood glue. I can't vouch for how long it will adhere, but it is easy to work with- you can shift the tolex to place it exactly where you want it and the excess can be wiped away with a damp cloth of paper towel.
I started watching at episode 44..cant believe its at 350!! Time flies, and so do you pal. Glad to hear your puppy is doing better. I lost my last one a while back and i wont be getting another one regretfully. I am just to old for a dog to depend on me being around day to day now. It does leave a lonely hole in your heart though. Keep up the great work!!👍✌️
I live in Canada where winters can be awful. I keep a small humidifier in my office/guitar room. Keeps the humidity from 37%-52% not perfect but good for the room November-March by then I can usually put the humidifier away for a few months. Regular winter where I am is -30*C to +5*C
The guy who says his Floyd Rose sounds like a sitar- I just went through the exact same thing- and my guitar was brand new. It was the Floyd- it had never been set properly and I just needed to tighten the spring tension on the spring claw until my bridge was level at standard pitch- then the sitar sound was gone. Usually, if this is the issue- it will only start buzzing after a certain fret- mine was after the 10th fret- on the high E and B strings. If it's only happening when your trem is locked- I would bet you're locking it with it tilted forward slightly. If you have an adjustable trem. stop you can just adjust it, so the bridge is perfectly level- if you're using a piece of wood or something, shave a tiny bit off it. If it level already- then you may need to shim like he advised you to- but I wouldn't go there until I knew I had my trem set optimally. My Floyd is a two-point connection and if you loosen either of the Allen screws that connect it to the guitar- it raises, if you tighten them, it lowers the bridge. So, you can probably just loosen the bottom one- on the treble side- if those are the strings that are buzzing- and it will raise it up. The reason I think you have the same issue is because you specifically say it sounds like a sitar and is a floating trem.- mine sounded just like that- like an electric sitar.
Congrats on 350 Episodes! You rock Phil, in every way imaginable. Been watching since the early days (the cat vid, driving to the shop). So appreciate your channel & all you do(and your family too!). Re: Godin. I’ve loved them since the 90s when I first saw a nylon string classical with synth capability. Love my multiac concert as well as a6 Koa. And so happy I was able to get them a few years ago before the prices went crazy!
Happy KYGP 350!! Loved it! Re the "High Output Pickup" AND "JC-40" Topics (in my World, they're linked): I've found that P/U output 10 - 18K (clean signal/flatter EQ - Single or H/B) into a Pedalboard, then the Front-End of a "Clean Amp/PA" affords greater "tonal flexibility"(pleasant cleans to brutal crunch). The JC-40 is my "go-2" Live Amp due to its "True Stereo" Inputs and RIGHTEOUS built-in Stereo Chorus and Reverb. It can get PLENTY LOUD, too!
I totally freaked last week when I thought about my dry sponge in my acoustics! Great advice. Do not let sponge dry out or it becomes dehumidifier! It’s true . After a week or so my acoustics feel better after some hydration. Love the humidity shower advice as well. Never thought about that but makes perfect sense!
Based on what you said in this episode, this week I bought a "mint" used Ibanez BTB1936 on Reverb for ~$460 less than it goes "new". It arrived yesterday, and I opened it a couple of hours ago. It was new in box. I was going to settle for a BTB846 (I just didn't want to spend $2k on a bass), but this advice allowed me to get the bass I was pining for at a cost I am comfortable with. I love this bass. 😍
?? It’s hugely impressive to have 350 episodes!!! At 365, you’ll have made a podcast a day for 1 yr!!! ❤🎉 PS I own that exact Godin guitar but I like a neck that’s like acoustic 1.69 or 1.7 at the nut . I really love it .. it has midi output and mono output … it’s a very well made guitar- a steal at $1100. ITs a guitar debt clock! 🤣
Pro audio star is one of those things that seems too good to be true, like you're gonna be ripped off but I've bought two guitars from them and had zero issues
I was skeptical when Tone King ordered that purple guitar from them on his live stream. A generic named shop in NYC sounded very sketchy, but it turned out he was already familiar with them.
I initially was apprehensive, too. The fact that they were/are very communicative addressed that concern. They DO use "stock photos", and don't provide photos of the item being purchased; but when that is not an issue, everything else about the deals I've done with them has been virtually flawless!
I picked up an Alvarez AG60CEAR Grand Auditorium solid A+ Sitka Spruce top, walnut binding, ebony arm carve, LR Baggs etc. For under $700 Canadian new. It is a great guitar.
I got a super deal off RU-vid buying a charvel "used" and it comes in as a brand new even sealed in the box pro audio star ,,, I was so happy I don't see it as problem at all, last year's model but still new from.a warehouse somewhere. Also with the first question I use a super clean solid state Roland JC120 as the platform for a good high gain sound from my boss me70 , I use a lot of different guitars with different pickups and it always sounds amazing but because it's not a high gain amp but basically clean you hear the guitar tone a lot more than a high gain amp overwhelming it with amp color making everything sound the same.
Thank you Phil for letting know I'm not crazy? I just got my first compound radius fretboard neck from Warmoth. After I set it up I could swear it looked like it was concave above the 12th fret. Interesting optical illusion. I think I have discovered that the fretboard radius is less important than the shape and thickness of the neck, fret size and a good setup.
If you buy a "new" left handed electric off the wall you are buying a guitar that has been used by hundreds of people, it has multiple scratches and all the plastic covers are peeled off.
Thats if you can you can find a leftie on the shelf! It is an absolute disgrace how us Sinestrals are discriminated against, less models, less finishes, less options! In the case of SIRE GUITARS, which all YT channela rave about, lefties are a "custom"order, more expensive, and a bloody 6 month wait! Hey Phil, how about a talking point on this! Or a you "encouraged", like others not to say anything. People rabbit on about discrimination of minorities, bloody hypocrites.
Sad, but true! Most of the time, they don’t even have one! My local guitar center has had the same ugly a$$ 3 color sunburst tele for like 5 years! 😢 It’s covered in greasy handprints, is missing the selector knob, and the frets are like a cheese grater! And they wonder why they can’t sell lefties! I’ve actually heard the so called salesman telling new players looking for lefties that it was a dumb idea! His favorite quote is apparently “They don’t make left handed pianos!” ???? It pissed me off so much, I wanted to give the guy one of my guitars ! They just don’t get it!
Some do not get it. Most do. I have purchased three instruments thus far that were indeed brand new and all were just that. New. Sold at a used price, no warranty. OK by me as warranties are just a sales tool.
As a technically left handed person, I’m also semi-ambidextrous… I write, throw, left handed… bat either way equally comfortable… golf and guitar I naturally started left handed, but found the learning process easier right handed, so I switched. I’m generally thankful for that gear-wise, but often wonder whether I’d be better or worse if I stuck with left-handed play… guess you can’t know. And no, now golfing or playing left handed seem just as foreign to me as right handed did back then… Prolly even more so now bc I’m (semi) proficient at both but only in a right hand orientation.
@11:40 Yes, I set up my Kemper Stage with Michael Britt and Tone Junkie profiles, and once I dialed in the 5 that I live, I left it alone and my "morphs" are just boosts for live solos.
My local Gibson dealer was told he could not be a dealer for Tokai or lose Gibson. So he did the deal on new Tokai guitars (335 and Les Paul types) and sold them just under list price as "used"
I bought a taylor AD22E from mysicians friend, it was on sale about 500 off, it was supposee to be new. When the guitar arrived it had the most nasty corroded and dirty strings, the frets were disgusting, they needed to be cleaned and polished, the neck needed an adjustment, and the whole thing has dusty and dirty. I couldnt believe they would send it to me the way they did. They didnt even try to make it look new. Well long story short, they gave me another good discount on it, and I did all of the work on it that it needed, and now its a great guitar that I love.
Phil, throwing an accolade your way, you're very well spoken. I have some solid body electrics. You're right about the acoustics. Lol I bought a Seagull Rustic @GC floor model , no discount given even after asking. It had some laquer flaking around the sound port. I wanted to return it but it was too late to. (edit; bare bones dreadnaught remaining mostly unused since 2011) Next year I purchased a faded Gibson SG floor model. I asked for discount because its used. They said "no" and brought out 3 brand new boxed ones , opened them, and all 3 weren't as nice, neck/body angle and splotchy finish. I bought the floor model and saved $30 being denied the gig bag. Well that $30 savings was a bad decision. From what I understand, I heard the gig bag deletion thing is a big no-no. I wish I could say I love the Seagull but I am giving it away.
Dude… had a small dog who had awful seizures… ones that lasted 5min+… it was rough finding the right level of meds for him… too much he was a zombie, too little he was back to seizures. Found the right balance finally and he had a happy, albeit shorter than average life. Just an awful thing to watch your pet go through… good luck man!
Just purchased a Friedman 1x12 to match my amp. Got a significant discount as it was listed as “used”. It was pristine so maybe a floor model, but I have no issues with the discounting. I made them an offer less than the list. They accepted. Everyone wins.
Hey Phil, I have always wanted to ask you a question but I tried to figure it out myself. Still stuck and now I am asking, if you had to have 1 guitar for giging in a 70's cover band what kind/brand would you pick? I currently use 2 LPs, PRS Se and a Tele, but last 2 shows the strap came off the LPs( I dont want to drop them). ANY brand or type is game for the answer. thanks!
One of my first ‘good’ acoustics as a kid was a Simon & Patrick Lutherie which I think was a part of that group of brands at some point, but this was early 90’s. Great guitar, even more meaningful bc my dad (RIP pops) gave it to me and was 100% supportive of all my music endeavors… including 3AM bar nights when I was 13-15 and he had to be there to get me on stage lol. Anyway, still have it, but it suffered a headstock tension crack… Getting it fixed and professionally will cost more money than it’s technically worth and I’m in a place I can do that now. Yet, when it’s done, I wouldn’t sell it for $1M.
Weird. Every time I try to enter one of your giveaways, I never receive a message in my inbox to confirm my entry. Not sure why. Regardless, I never win anything anyhow lol...and your show is GREAT! Keep up the awesome work!
Weird thing for me is I'm a beginner guitarist and find the flatter radius necks around 16 are easier to barr chords than a rounder neck like 9.5 or 10.
re: Heritage guitar: some people (like me) would absolutely love the small frets. It's totally ridiculous for you to think that your preference for frets means that you need to give the guitar a bad review.
What was said about GC was true at one time, but they are and have been for years, GC employees. I know this as a previous GC employee. That's why some of their fav techs left, they didn't want to have GC as their employer.
So... they make a few tools (one is specific for Ibanez trems) that are even better than the FL intonation key.. I own all 3 tools... night and day difference
Phil. Lots of people don't realize onions are very toxic to dogs then feed them food like pizza and meatballs which have onions in the sauce or the meat. Meatloaf, soup stocks, etc....
Ive had bad luck with pro audio star and AMS the last 5 guitars and im not exaggerating all 5 were supposedly brand new had some very noticeable blemishes. I feel like I cant trust anyone that gives good deals anymore. If you want a true A stock instrument buy Sweetwater but you will have to pay more. I just want transparency I hate being promised Brand New at a great price only to unbox blemished B stock.
Hi Phil. 2 ads before your discussion about ads in your podcast & 2 ads in the middle of the topic - irony? I've noticed increasing number of ads on RU-vid; I think they're getting too greedy. Greeting from Australia.
I've been having a few medical issues, I missed #350 last night 8( I have not missed very many of the 350 though!! 8) I'm a proud member of the Geeky Stuff Crew also!! I just watched the show. A couple things stood out to me... If someone watches much RU-vid at all the $12.00/month (+/- 1$) membership is a "must have"!! You can cancel any time, just try it for a month! If you hate commercials anywhere near as much as I do you will be super happy with it!! Imagine TV w/no commercials! It also includes all the 1 hour+ documentaries! Second is "fret size" on the Heritage guitars? I don't know the exact issue, but I've seen people buy 55-58 Les Paul Custom Shop, or Reproduction guitars then not be happy with the small, narrow frets. Larger sizes, we may call medium now, didn't start till 1959. Every, or most before that were narrow and not too tall. If the Guitar company is saying "like a 54-58", fat neck, the frets could very well be small too?!?. Just something to maybe check on, ask questions about before you buy. Great show!! See y'all next week!! 8) --gary
I'd love to see one on why many guitars almost doubled in price or more than that during COVID and never came back down. Surely companies don't expect us to believe that production and freight costs doubled and never came back down. People need to start protesting with their wallets and avoiding brands that have done this. I'm not sure about the United States, but in Australia, Ibanez are charging over double what they were just a few short years ago, even on budget models. I guess that's probably what they sell more of, but yeah, Epiphones have almost doubled and there are many others gouging the public because they've gotten a taste of what they can get away with at the moment.
I knew my gear, got sick, had to go to a nursing home and came home to most of my guitars but no longe owning an amp, good times, step families are awesome. Can’t blame my kid, she’s been dead 10 plus years. Pretty sure who took them, if it wasn’t for her sister, all of my guitars would be gone too. Looking at you Heather.
