Here is a follow-up to my initial review which wasn't meant to be a review in the first place. These are my thoughts after using the gun for two seasons. Tell me what you think about the gun and, if you own one, what are your experiences?

Mine is a 20ga and so far it cycled pretty much everything I put in it so far but it did not like to cycle the rio blue steel some reason. Great gun!

I agree. These guns are very nice indeed! Thanks for commenting.

CLP on the rails will help stop any jams or non ejection with this Retay.

Yeah, that’s what I use. I might need to be a little more liberal with it over the duration of my longer hunting trips

Got the waterfowl edition in 3.5in chamber. Love mine, it doesnt like the kent cartridges but it shoots really nice. Really easy to clean and has not failed me with other loads.

Glad to hear you are enjoying it. I truly believe my experience, as brief as it was, is purely attributed to the gun being so new. I love shooting it!

Do you shoot any light loads through it? If so, how did it go?

We have 3 among our group, soon to be 4. Here is the lightest that each has successfuliy run. 20 ga 3" Breakin - 50 Rounds of Monarch Wing & Clay 7/8 oz, 1300 fps (3 1/8 drams) Dove Season - 500 Rounds of Aguilla Competition 7/8 oz, 1275 fps (3 dram). Post First Season - Fed Top Gun 7/8 oz, 1210 fps (2 11/16 grams). These ran after post season cleaning but wouldn't when gun was new. *Initial guidance said 3 drams minimum, since changed to 2 3/4 drams. 12 ga 3" Breakin - 50 rounds of Fed Top Gun 3 drams (1 1/8 oz, 1200 fps). Lightest tried. Guidance is 3 drams minimum. 12 ga 3.5" Breakin - 50 Monarch Wing & Clay 3 1/2 Dram (1 1/8 oz, 1350 fps). It's a Duck Gun and that's the lightest he has run. Guidance is 3 1/4 drams minimum. The 12 ga 3" was ths first bought and ran the minimum drams from day one. However from what others have told me plan on maybe running an extra 1/4 to 1/2 dram for at least the first 50 rounds. These guns are not built sloppy so can have a little extra friction intially.

Thank you for so much information. That took some time and I appreciate it. I have been very impressed with the way my 12ga cycled out of the box. I didn’t do a “legitimate” break-in as it was difficult to find ammunition during the pandemic and the cost of it when I finally found it. I used dove season as my break-in and it cycled the 1oz, 1200fps #7 cheap Winchester loads beautifully. Again, I only had maybe 3 fte the first season and most of those were the 1400 fps, 1 1/8 #7 1/2. It just keeps spitting everything out now like it was designed to do. Of the 3 in your group, are they all pleased with their decision to purchase a Retay gun? Again, thank you for taking time for such a detailed comment. Happy hunting, Geoff

I've been shooting a Remington 1100 12 ga and Franchi 48 AL 20 ga for years. I've shot a lot of other shotguns and come close, but never bought anything else. They have impressed me enough that I've bought one. Just waiting on delivery..it's wearing Walnut, but I'm going to order an extra set of synthetic furniture form Retay ($100) for the really bad weather. None of the others have any real regrets about buying a Masai Mara. One of them is thinking about buying a Gordian Compact Adjustable 20 ga for his son for Christmas.

@@gk5891 I almost bought the Franchi Affinity 12ga but ultimately ended up with the Masai Mara. I’m hoping it lasts and is as reliable as the guns coming out of Italy 🇮🇹 My next might be Italian

Forgot, on your choke issue: Try a dab of grease instead of oil on the choke tubes. That will work if it's slow (150 rounds). If it's rapid (5 rounds) you will have to apply a little liquid plumbers tape to the threads.
@desertqwest
@desertqwest Год назад
@@gk5891 Yeah, kind of interesting. The thread they used goes from loose to immediately tight without any “cinching” down feel at all when tightening it. I’ve learned to check it throughout my morning just to make sure it hasn’t backed out. I’ll give the grease a try. 👍🏻

Any review of a shotgun should include info on stable bench rest pattern testing. I'm curious what pattern did your Retay shoot and where was the POI in relation to the POA? Did it shoot a 50/50, 60/40, or perhaps something different while sighting right down the rib?
@desertqwest
@desertqwest Год назад
Yes, I understand your point, and perhaps I will add some pattern shots in the future. I’ve never really put a significant amount of time on patterning my guns unless I am having serious concerns with accuracy. This is my real-world, hands-on kind of review. Every gun will pattern a little differently anyway, but it may be useful to show in a future video. I appreciate the advice and constructive criticism. In the end, I really like the gun and it has made me a better shooter.
@olegig5166
@olegig5166 Год назад
@@desertqwest hey man, I appreciate your attitude. IMHO one thing you said is very important, the fact that every gun might shoot a bit different but too many times we purchase a quality gun off the shelf assuming they all will shoot the same. We buy a brand because of proven history, however then within that certain make or model there can be differences between individual guns which need to be tweaked differently. I feel a baseline should be established for each individual shotgun before adjustments are made for individual fit. Too often we buy a new gun, go out and shoot some clays, we break the clays and call it good. But are we breaking those clays with 70% of the pellets are just 30% of them? Let me add: I wish every shotgun manufacturer would publish with every individual gun that particular gun's shot pattern. For instance they could say this particular gun throws a 60/40 pattern when shot from a stable rest and sighted right down the rib at 20yd with 1 1/8 field load.
@desertqwest
@desertqwest Год назад
@@olegig5166 I agree 💯% That would be great if the manufacturer would do something like that.
@olegig5166
@olegig5166 Год назад
@@desertqwest they may not do it until we the customers force it. I think that if guys like you who are producing quality videos would start emphasizing the point, soon the public might catch on and start demanding it. Sometimes I wonder if the general public is fully aware of this accuracy variance issue, I mean after all as we have mentioned "scatter" guns do have a much larger kill zone than do rifles.
@olegig5166
@olegig5166 Год назад
@@desertqwest just another thought. I bet you have several friends and hunting buddies who have a variety of different makes and models. An interesting video might be to get 'em all together and document each gun's POI compared to POA. It makes no difference what each individual has done to personalize the fit, just put each gun in stationary sled and sight right down the rib with target setting just on top of bead. Shoot the same load, choke, and distance for each. I know I would be interested in results.
