@@cujo229 I have quite a few Baofengs, including the 5r. Problem is that my 5r is locked to the amateur radio frequencies. I do have an amateur radio operators license. I wanted a non baofeng gmrs radio. So I got this radio. It was because of Ria that I purchased it.
@@nimblehealer199 get a loaded chirp file from unlocked radio and you can break the program lock. Also go into settings on chirp and you can expand the frequency range
I like the u 5r for ham bands and gmrs cause even using the rubber duck antenna the swr won't go high with transmit power under 8 watts. I can't see paying good money on a gmrs radio when a uvr5 does the same thing cheaper
it's kind of funny that you left this comment, Last night I downloaded the latest version of Ubuntu. Thanks for the info, I'll look into the chirp software.
Thanks for sharing John. We use GMRS at the farm and around. With the Base, mobile, and walkie-talkies we get some really great distance. In the Mtns and our rural area, not many use Gmrs and no repeaters it is a great way to communicate with no real traffic we get 15-miles or so depending on the terrain but that's always reliable. We can also get farther. We pulled the CBs and 2 meters out years ago. Use the 11 meters for skipping and love that for sure. Lic is easy to get and got one back around 2001 or so LOL. Thanks again friend for sharing and hope all are doing well. 73's NY202 USA Drew
Have you tried making your own antenna's out of tram 1185? I cut my own antenna out of stainless welding rods...works great. I only use one frequency, so swr is low.
@@tf7274 I run a nice ground plane for the base and nice antennas on the vehicles. My WT s are powerful ... I also have a smaller type beam and a J pole wire antenna that gets out well when in the woods or mtns. I have talked 30 miles static to my mobile in the right places.
@@cbradioghosttalk1986 awesome setup We're in very flat terrain but on top a 100 mile wide river valley. I have a mfj pro tuner that also does VHF/UHF. Don't know how to use it other than swr. But sure makes antenna building easier. We use gmrs here because we're away from big city's and no one uses walkie talkies anymore...
Hi Mower Junky! I understand the GMRS licenses will finally drop to $35 around April 19th, 2022. When you get your license maybe we can try to communicate via the Hopkins repeater on 462.675 (input 467.675) PL Code 141.3. I am guessing you can hit it from R town. That will probably be channel 20 on your radio. 73
There are things you need to adjust, as in turning off privacy codes. This allows you to talk with others, vice versa. Retevis should have shipped these with no codes turned on. Others have stated the repeater frequencies are backwards. Meaning programmed wrong. I haven't messed with those frequencies yet.
Looks to be good quality 👍. If the truth was told , probably made in the same assembly plant and shared parts as the higher dollar hand held ham radios , but a different label , different frequencies. I know the platform is very similar to some of the Kenwood hand held radios . Good video 151 , congrats on your channel growing and getting good products to review . If they ever send you a 2 meter mobile , we will do some horse trading !! 73’s and hopefully skip will change directions soon . Still all west coast for me
They are built very rugged, and heavier than I thought they would be. it feels like a quality radio, not like a kids toy. Thanks for watching, Take care.
