This video will be part of a three part series. The folks at Retevis provided me with this model to evaluate so first we’ll take a look at its features and specifications, and I’ll have two follow up videos: one on how to program, otherwise known as creating a code plug, for a DMR radio and a video on responding to your questions or comments on the first two. So please leave your questions in the comments below and I’ll follow up on them in the third video in the series.

When I was 15 (I'm 26 now) my bus driver was a ham and he got me very interested in amateur radio. He even gave me an old radio shack radio and a handmade copper pipe antenna. He gave me the book to study and it looked very intimidating so I just monitored. One night in St. Joseph MO we had severe weather and tornadoes in the area. So I took my equipment and antenna outside to the porch and began to monitor the chatter. I went inside for a potty break and came back outside and someone had stolen it! :( I almost just forgot about ham radio. While watching a RU-vid video a video about ham radio was suggested to me and I watched it! Now I have the bug again to do it! It seems like it's much easier now to get your technicians license and equipment has come down on price (at least to get your foot in the door). I'm so glad there's several great communities on RU-vid to help me out! Thanks for the videos!

Glad to know you can achieve any needed menu changes without having to use the trackball. I remember having to frequently take apart the mechanism in the Blackberry 8100 when it stopped functioning. Does have some great selling points otherwise.

I use it to listen to OSCAR FM satellites, it has very good reception in this type of activity

Been using the RT82 for several months, better antenna design than the MD2017. The trackball isn't that bad once you get used to it.

I'll agree, the track ball isn't a deal killer. It just takes a bit of getting used to.

This radio reminds me of my TYT MD-2017. It took me awhile to get use to the trackball. Nice review and thanks Michael. K0RGH

Would you recommend the RT82, the HD1 or the MD-2017? 73 de E73HAK
@KB9VBRAntennas

That's a good question and I think it boils down to personal preference. All three radios operate the same internally, so the difference between them is the body style and user interface. The MD-2017 and RT82 both use the track ball selector while the HD1 has a more conventional button system. But the HD1 also comes with 10 watts of transmit power. Some see that as a benefit but I believe a handheld radio shouldn't be that powerful. If I had to choose, I'd pick the RT82 over the MD2017. If the track ball is an issue then I'd go with the HD1 but not use it at full power.

Could this radio be used with other two way radios such as the midland two way radios? I want a DMR radio that I can use for my jam radio hobby along with one that can be used when I go camping and hiking with my friends. Thank you in advance !

It is a good radio, I have one, but it has a drawback, when the battery starts to fail and you want to get another one as a spare, the deal is, buy another radio and buy a separate battery.

The only reason I'm not interested in this radio is cuz of the scroll ball.

Fair enough. Ergonomics are important and the track ball might not be the right choice for some.

I believe it will just cause to many issue with me accidentally changing the channel. When i sit down. Had this problem before. I prefer having a nob on top of the radio to the channel .

I wish that the Retevis RT82 had the Anytone features and a working GPS. The Retevis RT82 is build like a tank, but some claimed features are missing in my unit ( GPS/APRS doesn't work even if the unit identifies as an GPS-version ) + Retevis support is non-existing. ☹ ( Yes - I have enabled GPS in the codeplug and compared it with others. )

Another ham in my area has that radio and really likes it. Especially since it is compatible with Motorola accessories.
