I retired to Jomtien Thailand 9 months ago today. I rent a 40 square meter 1 bedroom condo about a 15-minute walk to the beach. I am surrounded by restaurants, bars, pharmacies, and convenient stores. I cook some meals but eat out most of the time. I travel to different parts of Thailand every few months. I am not a drinker or smoker and spend about $1500 a month, all in including visa fees and health insurance. It's a good life at a very affordable price.

@@EamonnHogan-eu3qc Ukranian people are generally very resourceful, in many cases they've had to be. Check out average salary & cost of living in Ukraine. Ukranian people can live equally as a Filipino does, no problem at all.

@@EamonnHogan-eu3qc Live like a local Filipino - they do it all the time. Some expats have done this too - just do not get romantically attached to any of the locals - they will milk you dry. Go to one of the provinces, live in a small town in a rented room or small tin shack. I have done it, just be aware of the "rules of the jungle" in poor areas. Make lots of friends - preferably without committing to giving them money (which you will be asked for a lot). But if you choose one of the 7500+ islands, you will not be far from the ocean.

Tamarindo is so Americanized that the locals refer to it as Tamagringo! It is very expensive due to so many foreigners visiting and wanting to live there. You can live for $1000 a month in the towns of Occidente (from 30 to 45 minutes from the International Airport) like Grecia, Sarchi, Naranjo, Palmares, and San Ramon. These are more Costa Rican towns with all the amenities and offer nice weather yet only 45 minutes to 1 hour from the capital city and 90 minutes from the beaches of the Central Pacific Coast.

@LahrySibley

I love the video, you two. And it really is "you two". What a team. You both are very well informed. But your dialog is incredible. You both are obviously equally informed, and so you share a conversation as if some one wrote it and then you agree on which line one or the other will speak without getting off topic. The respect you have together and for each other is like nothing I've ever seen. Thank you for letting us all see your beautiful relationship together. No competition, just a unified flow. Wow. I would think all of your comments in these videos would be similar with a rent budget of say $500 US/mo. I have an income of more than 2K. But as you well pointed out, one must have an emergency contingency and a way to fund said emergency. But I also like to travel. That consideration in mind, which SE Asian Country would you recommend as a hub to stay and yet be able to visit other near by countries. Me, I love the markets and when I see street food in Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, I drool. I would definitely need to be near one of those. A really big one like Bangkok, I probably would not need to be anywhere else ever. LOL. The other must have for me is great snorkeling/scuba diving very near by. I could spend equal amounts of time underwater and at the fish counter eating what I've seen. LOL. Internet is a must have also. Public transportation in these places to me is just a no brainer. Traffic, parking, theft, staying alive, insurance, all of these things are of no concern with public transportation. And in most places it is very cheap. Catching a motorcycle taxi maybe not such a smart thing. But the tuk tuks are fine and they know how to go with the big squeeze. Thanks again for the great video. But the biggest reward for me is watching you two work together. Just wonderful. I love you both and I have meeting you two on my bucket list. ;) Be blessed. Have fun. Lahry

Thanks for the video and info. Last year, I lived in the Jomtien area for 6 months and my monthly budget was $3K and that's with companionship with a regular Thai lady for 3x a week without buying any LDs and barfines. I did not eat any western food due way more expensive and been eating Thai food in the market. In my early 50's now, I was planning to retire but I changed my mind in the very last second and back to work in CA. Will do this again, next year.

I live on $800 a month in San Diego Seaport Village area. Yes I spend very little for as I planned early and goto on the housing list years ago knowing when I retired I would have limited income and the 30% of income for rent makes it very do-able. Put your name on lists when you are in your 50's if you want to live in nice places.

Very helpful. Thank you. I want to retire very soon, or at least take my work on the road. I like the idea of getting down to a very low budget like $2000 a month for the simple fact that it forces you to live like a local. I biggest bitch about the United States is that everybody’s so busy working that they don’t interact with each other. My big interest in living overseas is Living somewhere where people have the time to interact with each.
